28 Observation Car Experiences The Southern Railway appreciated the picturesque scenery of the South West of England and from 1947 the Devon Belle service operated two Pullman Observation cars as part of their all Pullman service in the heyday of steam in the South West. Thanks to tireless efforts by the Swanage Railway, they are pleased to take you back to these halcyon days of steam and luxury on Dorset s premier steam railway. Pullman Observation Car No.14 has not only been used on the Devon Belle trains in the South West, but around Scotland in the late 1950 s and until In 1969 with the locomotive Flying Scotsman it toured the USA between 1969 to After 35 years as a static restaurant and conference centre in San Francisco, following fundraising it was saved and transported back to the UK in 2007 where it was restored to working order and entered service on the Swanage Railway for visitors and passengers to enjoy. Travel in the Observation Car during Your Visit. The Observation Car is available on specially selected normal train services, which are shown on within the timetable, being identifiable by the letter O in the timetable heading. 39 Pullman & CIWL Model Scene 2016 Bachmann produced catalogue number Midland Pullman Special Collector s Edition. For details refer to my review within newsletter No.31, July & August 2016, pages 31 to 34. Included within was a pack of six figures C/No Midland Pullman Stewards & Train Crew. The pack contains four Pullman stewards each in an individual pose, a Pullman Inspector and a train driver. With regard to the driver s dress, in the early years of operation of both the Midland Pullman and Western Region Blue Pullman operations, the drivers of the Western Region sets wore a white smock type coat with a blue collar and lapel, to which reference was made to them looking like an Lyons Maid salesman. The Midland Pullman drivers wore Blue Battledress jacket and trousers. Within the 2018 Bachmann product range announcement, Bachmann have made the train crew pack readily available, reference C/No Midland Pullman Stewards & Train Crew. The figures being suitable for use with Umber & Cream liveried Pullman cars, including the BR Mk1 ECML cars. Suitable to cover the early years of Both Midland & Western Regions Blue Pullman services. The pack figures do not have a base, so are not free standing, I used the clear plastic packaging the figures come in, cutting small squares and super gluing the figures to each base. You may also consider installing the stewards and inspector within car interiors. Edition No.42 - May & June Page 39 of 54

43 Postbox. Clive Hanley. From: M.Simek - March 1 st. Subject: Kitchen Car THELMA. Hello Terry, Thank you as ever for your recent issue. I am interested in car THELMA for modelling reasons, has there ever been a history on this one featured? Editors Response. Currently the history of individual Pullman cars within the newsletter covers cars up to As THELMA is an all-steel K type of 1928, the answer is no. I have since receipt of the collated and forwarded (March 2 nd ) the known history of the car From: M.Simek - March 3 rd. Subject: Kitchen Car THELMA. Hello Terry, What can I say! Everything I needed to know for this project, very many thanks, best regards. Editors Response. I have put together the PCS-Archive with the aim to respond to such requests, as per the PCS-Archive motto Information is for sharing and not gathering dust. Edition No.42 - May & June Page 43 of 54

44 From: C.Kerswill - April 16 th. Subject: Special Edition No.12 - The 1951/2 U Type Pullman Cars. Thank you once again Terry for welcoming us aboard. I only wish I had the knowledge and could contribute something to your excellent publication. Editors Response. My pleasure Colin, it makes my time most worthwhile in production, and with regard to contribution to the newsletter. I only wish I had your skill and knowledge with regard to being a fireman, driver and finally Mainline Steam Traction Inspector From: D.Rapley - April 16 th. Subject: Special Edition No.12 - The 1951/2 U Type Pullman Cars. Terry, This is just great, I saw the Golden Arrow quite often as a boy around 1955 to My dad always managed to get the police to let us on the platform to see the train depart, I remember the platform had a lot of them as well as men in trilby hats standing around, security. I remember seeing them doing all the custom checks opening suitcases etc, on trestle tables on the platform! Why are they doing that Dad? I never took much notice of the Pullman car names though, only six years old, I was more a fan of the Brighton Belle because we used to go on it. In the early 1960s, the all steel 1928 stock were replaced by Mk1 Pullmans on the Kings Cross lines, and a lot of them transferred to the Southern Region to run on the Bournemouth Belle. By about 1962 I remember seeing one slightly different to the others, it looked rather like a Golden Arrow car. It was of course Car No.303 and this soon became a favourite of mine. It had such a large kitchen which reminded me of the old 12 wheelers, in particular Rosalind. Another first-class trip down memory lane, thank you very much Terry. Editors Response. Dennis, thank you for sharing your Pullman memories, it is always a pleasure to read and share such memories with fellow newsletter readers Edition No.42 - May & June Page 44 of 54

45 From: Jon Horsman - April 27 th. Subject: Blue Pullman Special. Some time ago you assisted me with information on the Bulmers Cider train. I now write to ask if you can assist with information on the use of a Blue Pullman set on 13th March 1965 from Coventry to West Hartlepool for a rugby union final match. There are pictures of it at West Hartlepool in a couple of publications, but no-where can I find any pictures on-route, nor any details of the actual route taken. The train must have come north up the Midland main line as far as Sheffield Midland, then either via Pontefract or Doncaster to York and ECML northwards to Northallerton, or via Leeds and Harrogate/Ripon to Northallerton, where the line diverges to Middlesborough, Stockton and West Hartlepool. I've searched for many years for an answer and go none, so am hoping you may have a gem of information tucked away somewhere. Many thanks for your time and dedication. Editors Response. Jon, I currently have no details within the PCS-Archive with regard to the actual route the charter would have taken in both directions of travel. In the event that any reader can assist with this request any information will be most welcome Information is for sharing and not gathering dust. As ever, I am always most interested in receiving news, photographs and information to include within the Newsletter, Special Editions and the PCS-Archive. Do you have a question/query that requires an answer, I will endeavor to get you the answer? to t.bye@ntlworld.com Edition No.42 - May & June Page 45 of 54

53 Locomotive No S.Widdowson. No.1424 with The Presidential Train at Pinhao on May 5 th, The Series 1400 consisted of sixty seven diesel-electric locomotives constructed for the Portuguese Railways (CP) between 1967 and Ordered primarily to replace steam locomotives then still in use on CP. Designed and engineered by English Electric, they are closely modelled mechanically on the British Rail Class 20 locomotives but using a more powerful intercooled 1330 bhp 8CSVT version of the Class 20's 8SVT engine giving a a top speed of 65mph (105 km/h). The locomotives were designed for the 1,668 mm (5 ft in) Iberian gauge and larger loading gauge than possible in Great Britain. The first ten were built in England at the Vulcan Foundry in Newton-le-Willows, but the remaining locomotives were assembled in Portugal by Sorefame. The locomotives share many components with the larger and more powerful Série During the early years of 21st century some have been sold for further service in Argentina, but as of 2012 many remained in service with CP.
