7 AQUILA Plea for Assistance Brian Smith. Many thanks for Coupe News, as the readers will be aware we have had for some years two Pullman cars these being AQUILA & CAR No.36. Both cars have been used for many educational events, wine and dine and Santa trains. Car AQUILA is in now need of some urgent restoration work. The support pillars plus the car end, surrounding one of her doors is suffering from wet rot and needs replacing. We have skilled labour but need to know if any reader can help us with any drawings or information on how she was constructed. We are planning to commence the restoration work on her later this year, I would appreciate any help you can give. 8 Photograph/Image Information Ron Hann. I have to say that I concur wholeheartedly with your comments regarding the identification of photographs/images. I'm sure that all my friends and relatives must be getting heartily sick of my harping, but I am constantly impressing upon them the necessity of identifying every image in one's collection. Having said that, of course, I have to admit to having been hoist with my own petard in this regard. I have just turned 70 years of age and have been taking photographs for about 55 of those years. Unfortunately, and especially in my earlier days, I have at times neglected to obey my own edicts with the result that my current project is to go through all of my photographs and ensure that there is at least some form of identification, even if only minimal, on each and every one. It is very handy to be able relate the negatives to the prints, too. All of my negatives are identified, in some way, and, as far as possible, this number is recorded on the print. It is my ultimate aim (I should live that long) to develop a sort of spread sheet, or other form of cross referencing system, in which every relevant detail of every print and negative are matched up in such a way that a reasonably efficient way can be developed of finding any image(s) based on negative, print, date, subject, location, etc., fairly promptly. I do a reasonable amount of writing of articles for an Australian rail fan magazine and the need to be able to find whatever I want is sometime fairly urgent. Of course, I realise that the "perfect" system either doesn't exist or would be so cumbersome as to be useless. Oh, to be able to handle one of these machines efficiently and some of the newer programmes, as well. May I also remind your readers of the absolute necessity of ensuring that one's wishes regarding such items, and in fact any items, are expressly and clearly spelled out in one's Will. It saves an awful lot of tears and embarrassment later on. Coupé News No. 77 July 2009 Page 8 of 18
9 Mike Morant Pullman Collection. c Dr. Ian C. Allen/Mike Morant Collection The details with with regard to the above photograph refers as Drummond T9 No. 300 hauling a down Eastbourne Pullman train on the Quarry Line in the 1930's. Personally, I think it had come via the Quarry Line but the shot is probably taken nearer Horley where Dr. Ian C. Allen seems to have taken many of his pictures. The train itself is of interest because there seems to be little mention of an Eastbourne Pullman in books, magazines and on the web other than the fact that a 5 BEL used to run such a service on Sundays only. However, I'm sure that there was an Eastbourne Limited back in steam days and this seems to prove the point. M.A.Morant Photographic Collection. 11 Flying Scotsman North America Tour Jim Baldwin. I am writing a book on Flying Scotsman and am very interested in the train that it took to North America. I have information on the Pullman Cars, but sadly information is lacking on the exhibition coaches. Has any reader any information from previous publications that would throw light on these carriages? I am aware that they were fitted out at Twickenham, but do you know where they were painted in Pullman livery etc. I am also interested in their final resting place; any help any way will be most welcome. Responses: Robert Carroll via Yahoo Group BR Coaching Stock BR Loco Hauled Coaching Stock This information was spotted by Mark Jenkins in August 1969 Railway World, page 374: "Six of the vehicles forming the Flying Scotsman tour train to America have been parked in Twickenham down siding during June and July while a local firm of exhibition contractors fit out the interiors for trade displays. The coaches, which comprise two Gresley full brakes Nos and 70758, Thompson full brakes Nos 70632, and 104, and the privately preserved former Devon Belle observation car No.SC281, have been repainted in Pullman livery and the full brakes bear the American flag and the Union flag at the coach ends." The Brighton Belle Project. My thanks to Keith Gunner and Frank Nicholas for advising of the web site now set up to advise on the projects progression and how you can help. 12 Request re Golden Arrow U Class Pullman Car Seating Upholstery Derek Wilde In reply to Derek s request as detailed within the June edition. The following response has been received from Pat O Connor (current owner of ARIES). Regarding Derek Wilde's query re ARIES and Car No 303. The main structural difference seems to have been siting of the lavatory. Within car ARIES it is at the coupe end and on the coupe side ; within Car No 303 the lavatory is at the same end (away from the kitchen) but on the opposite side. Car No 303 also had 2+1 seating. I attach two images of the interior of ARIES, courtesy of Doug Lindsay, which clearly show the 1st class seating. A picture of the interior of Car No 303 appears in R W Kidner's 'Pullmans on the Southern' (Oakwood Press 1987) and this too was provided by Doug Lindsay. 13 cdoug Lindsay. The Interior of one of the two saloon areas within CAR No.303 Response from Richard Salmon. Indeed a variety of moquettes would have been used, but certainly the Bluebell Railways Pullman Car 64 had the attached third class moquette (which we have had reproduced for the car's refurbishment) see Dave Clarke's photo: interior This moquette was also used in the 1951 Golden Arrow refurbishment of Car 35, which was remodelled as Second Class, as seen in Plate 148 of B.Haresnape's book Pullman Travelling in Style. For first class, maybe the attached fleur de lis pattern would be appropriate. This sample, obtained from Eastleigh, would appear, from Haresnape's Pullman book plate 142 to be amongst other uses, the moquette used to trim the Trianon Bar perch seats in the 1951 Golden Arrow car Pegasus. The attached photo of the chairs are some sold on e bay some time ago, confirming use in other firstclass cars. Coupé News No. 77 July 2009 Page 13 of 18

16 Update 1979 June 30 Years Ago Raymond Watson: June 23 rd. Noted within the formation of the 05.50am Kings Cross to Edinburgh hauled by Class 55 Deltics and is Mk1 Pullman car E312 FALCON ( II) in the reverse BR Corporate livery for East Coast Pullman cars of Grey/Blue livery. (MRPNo.5). Raymond has advised some additional information to the above as recorded last month (Issue 76) The usual one class 55 Deltic working a down 05:50 KX Edinburgh (diverted via Carlisle) was hauled by Class 55 Deltic No CREPELLO. This was supplemented from Doncaster to Darlington with the addition of Class 55 No FIFE & FOFAR YEOMANRY, which was ex works and used this service working as a test working. In addition to the a single Pullman car E312 FALCON which was behind the locomotive with 8 x BR Mk2 coaches made up the trains formation from Kings Cross to Edinburgh. The Pullman car was locked out of service to passengers. It was noted that CREPELLO worked back on a rake of BR Mk1 coaches and was failed heading South over Beattock Summit on the West Coast Mainline (Diversion). It was supplemented at Carlisle by Class 47 No Archive BBC Film Footage Andy Bishop. Many thanks Terry for the latest edition of Coupe News, another fantastic publication. Fellow readers may be interested in some Pullman clips included in this archive BBC footage. Hornby Dublo & Wren Pullman Cars & Brighton Belle Models M.Hammond. Thank you for Coupe News. I am hoping to write an article on the Hornby Dublo & Wrenn Pullmans and Brighton Belle sets by Wrenn for the Hornby Collectors Association. I believe with regard to fellow readers of Coupe News that it would be also useful to them also. An observations with regard to the Hornby Dublo model of car ARIES, the real Pullman car was fitted with Gresley bogies, but the model was fitted with LMS type. As for new names, these were made by Wrenn and are still available from the new owners of Wrenn via their web site. Coupé News No. 77 July 2009 Page 16 of 18

18 Tail Lamp. My thanks to the following readers who have taken time to contribute to this edition of Coupé News in the form of , news, articles and photographs, these include T.Knox, T.Mulligan, R.Watson, K. Robertson, D.Everson, M.Hammond, A.Bishop, P.O Connor, R.Hann, B.Smith, R.Salmon. Without your contributions Gentlemen this edition would have been much the poorer. It seems some time now since the June edition was completed and forwarded to you. In the period between the publication of the June and this edition I have received some interesting material for inclusion in the form of news and photographs. To be precise quite a bit, and really too much to place within this edition, even after pdf formatting the attachment size, it is still fairly large, and as I have promised to keep the attachment size to a reasonable level for you to down load, I have made the following decision. As the amount of material for inclusion is of great interest and I have no wish to delay advising you on what has been going on during June, I have decided to produce an Extra July edition for you, and this will be ed to you on July 2nd.
