11 STATESMAN RAIL LTD Po Box 83, St Erth, Hayle, Cornwall, TR27 9AD: Phone Web: Statesman Rail is the charter train division of Railfilms Ltd. Registered in England N o Rolling stock owner and video producer Railfilms, which operates various luxury vehicles on the network, is set to launch its own charter train programme using the Statesman Rail name. The first public train is scheduled to run on June 13 th, and the company plans to run a further five trains, including two Scottish land cruises in partnership with West Coast Railways and Railtourer, before the end of the year. APOLLO Photograph Clive Hanley The decision to set up its own charter operation comes as a result of the carriages seeing little use since last September when the major hirer over the last few years reduced their operations. With the current doubts over the economic climate and how this will affect leisure travel Statesman Rail has decided to start small, by running a limited number of trains this year, mainly in partnership with other well respected and long standing tour promoters. The team who have set up the new business have considerable experience of charter train marketing and operation spanning around 25 years Nick Dodson (MD) and Peter Watkinson (Operations Director) were both involved in Regency Rail Cruises, which was sold to VSOE in 1999 for its northern operation. Since then, Railfilms has concentrated on rolling stock provision, building up a new fleet of luxury saloons with two more carriages currently being refurbished at the workshops of Rail Restorations North East in Shildon and West Coast Railways at Carnforth. MKIIa FO MKIIa BFK Interior APOLLO Photograph Peter Watkinson Each of the tours will convey four types of accommodation: Standard, First Class, Premier Dining and Pullman Dining. To make up a complete rake for the trains, the Railfilms vehicles which will be moving from Old Oak Common to a new base at Crewe shortly will be augmented with coaches from the Riviera Trains fleet. COUPE NEWS No. 72 FEBRUARY 2009 Page 11 of 21

12 The trains are being aimed largely at the general public and family markets and as such will not employ specific motive power. DB Schenker Class 67s or WCRC Class 47s are expected to be used; dependent on the TOC employed for each train Statesman Rail plans to work with both the DB/Riviera Alliance and West Coast Railways. EWS/DB Class 67 & Railfilms Stock at Chichester Photograph Nick Dodson Bookings may be made through the reservations office or online through a secure server and unlike some other promoters, and in order to instill some customer confidence back into the charter industry, we will not be asking customers to pay in full at the time of booking, which may be many months before the tour operates just an initial deposit with the final balance 30 days prior to the tour. Statesman Rail confirmed trains for 2009 June 13 th August 28 th Sept th Oct th Dec 5th Dec 12 th The Cumbrian Mountain & Coastal Statesman The English Riviera Statesman The Lord of the Isles Statesman The West Highland Statesman The Edinburgh Christmas Statesman The Edinburgh Christmas Statesman Editors Comment. 17 The Churchill Van an update and an appeal for funds Stephen Doughty Swanage Railway. As passengers of Coupe News may be aware, the application for Heritage Lottery Fund support for the Churchill project was not successful, much to our surprise and despite widespread national and international support. We have been invited to resubmit, but in the meantime we have decided to undertake basic restoration work to make the van suitable for display at Corfe Castle. We need 10,0000 for this. Will you help? The van, shown here on 30 th January 1965, is currently at the East Somerset Railway at Cranmore, where the restoration work would be undertaken. There is capacity available in May for repairs to the body and roof to be undertaken, followed by a repaint into Pullman livery. The Council of Management has made the commitment to have the work done Photoo copyright Roger Merry Price 2007 Photoo is copyright Andrew P M Wright Following restoration, the van will be positioned behind the existing museum in the former goods shed at Corfe Castle, through which it will in due course be accessible and provide additional exhibition space. If a revised HLF bid is made and is successful, this will include interior restoration, and display of material about the role of railways in the last war, plus enhanced access facilities. If you would like to support this project, please completee the form below and return this with your donation. UK taxpayers can increase the value of their donation at no extra cost by completing a gift aid form (as detailedd on the next page, a photocopy is acceptable, or contact Coupe News at and a blank copy will be ed to you in Word format) which enables the Trust to reclaim tax paid. Thank you. Steve Doughty Swanage Railway Trust COUPE NEWS No. 72 FEBRUARY 2009 Page 17 of 21

19 THE BRIGHTON BELLE PROJECT Clive Morris & David Jones. ct.robbins The Brighton Belle project has a background from the identification that there is a desperate need for under cover accommodation for electric railway vehicles, particularly those currently at Coventry. Sadly the neither the National Railway Museum or London Transport are able to help, their current remit is interaction and not storage of large artifacts. To publicise the need Denis Dunstone of the Transport Trust suggested recreating the Brighton Belle. The North Norfolk Railway, (Deputy Chairman Clive Morris) has loaned its two Cars long term, also an anonymous sponsor has purchased both CAR No.85 and 88, and in addition is part funding the restoration of CAR No.88 by Rampart at its Derby Workshop. Car No.85 is pretty derelict and is being stored at Southall. A Trust, the 5BEL Trust has been set up and the trustees being Denis Dunstone, the sponsor, Graeme Gleaves, the Transport Trust Chairman and Clive Morris. CAR No.85 was loaded onto an Allely's road transporter on Monday January 19 th at the VSO E British Pullman Depot at Stewarts Lane for onward movement to Southall for temporary storage. CAR No.88 will be departing Stewarts Lane shortly for movement to Ramparts Workshop at Derby. I hope with the assistance of Clive Morris to keep readers advised on the project development. 21 Tail Lamp. My thanks to the following readers who have taken time to contribute to this edition of Coupe News in the form of , news, articles and photograph s. David Jones, Peter Watkinson, Simon Kohler, Clive Hanley, John Whiteley, Stephen Doughty, Jonathan Stangroom, Clive Morris & Jon Jolliffe for without your contributions this edition would have been much the poorer. It s hard to believe that its 38 years since the then British Rail Main Line Steam Ban was broken on October 2 nd 1971 by GWR King Class No.6000 King George V with the five Bulmer Pullman cars and two BR Mk1 coaches worked from Hereford to Birmingham. It is also 37 years since the withdrawal of the Brighton Belle service on April 30 th 1972, but plans are afoot to bring back one 5 Bel set to operational order, with financial support could the set be operational for the 40 th anniversary in I hope to have more information on how contributions can be made within next month s edition.
