3 RBL COUNTY AWARD FOR DEBDEN BRANCH FLAVOURS OF WIVENHOE Sue Jacobs, Jane O Dell and Julia Vezza, three enthusiastic Branch Members were sipping wine and talking food, when they came up with the idea of producing a recipe book, all proceeds to raise money for The RBL Welfare Fund. The idea took off. Laurence Knox, our then chairman, gave us his 100% support from the beginning. We Three obtained quotes for all costs. Thus early in 2014 all branch members were asked to contribute recipes, anecdotes, drawings, photographs. As Wivenhoe has a much travelled community, recipes have come from China, through SE Asia to India, Africa and much of Europe to just down the road. The title Flavours of Wivenhoe captures the uniqueness of the collection both in its culinary as well as artistic terms. Parallel to this we appealed for sponsorship so all costs would be covered. Private individuals and local businesses were most generous and by August we had hit our target and went to print with an initial run of 300 copies. We held a spectacular launch on the 17 th October, where over 30 recipes, hot and cold, from the book were on offer to be tasted. The book sold for 10. Our local bookshop The Wivenhoe Bookshop very generously sold the book for us. When the first run sold out we had sufficient money to finance a reprint of 50 more which also sold out. We are now considering a final print run. So far we have raised approximately over 3,500. COUNTY SECRETARY BRANCH EVENTS Please send through information on your branch events and activities that you would like advertised on our Essex webpages, send them to countysecretaryessex@britishlegion.org.uk for inclusion in the What s On section. 70 th ANNIVERSARY VE DAY We are particularly keen to hear about any VE Day events that are planned by branches or local authorities, please send information to countysecretaryessex@britishlegion.org.uk The Chairman of Debden Branch Royal British Legion, Colonel (Retd) Roger Burgess OBE, has just been awarded with a prestigious Essex County RBL Certificate of Appreciation for all he has achieved since taking over the Branch 2 years ago. Last year the Branch won two County Awards and one National Award for recruiting and efficiency. It has just been announced that the Branch has won a further two County Awards for a similar performance over the last 12 months which means that Debden must be rated the top small RBL Branch without a Club in Essex for consistent success over the last two years. The strength of the Branch has increased by a staggering 434 % over this period and members have been presented with some individual 12 awards This year the Branch raised 1, for the RBL Poppy Appeal, a notable achievement for such a small village, reflecting an increase in the collection for the fourth year running. HOCKLEY BRANCH VISIT TO JEWISH CARE HOME The Branch Treasurer accompanied by the Branch Standard Bearer, Bernie Cross, visited the Southend/Westcliff Jewish Care Home on the 20th November. They were introduced to two of the ladies, Phylis and Anne who have between them knitted 800 Poppies over the Year. The main purpose of the visit was to receive a Donation to the Poppy Appeal. They were delighted to be given a Cheque for They were made very welcome with tea and cream cakes!! PAGE 3
