3 St Neots Riverside Miniature Railway set to open Riverside Miniature Railway Club (RMRC) was founded last year as a not for profit organisation run entirely by volunteers, with plans to offer miniature railway rides to children and adults for just 1 per go. It is expected that in time the income will be sufficient to cover the railway development costs and allow excess income to be donated back to local charities supporting young people around St Neots. The railway is being developed on the former pitch and putt site in Riverside Park, near the Ambiance Café. The railway site is a greenfield location and requires a massive amount of work to transform it into the country railway. The site plan shows the proposed route for the railway, with Phase 1 shown in Blue. The Phase 1 route (300M of track), includes construction of the station as well as the purchase of coaching stock and a locomotive which will cost 25,000 to complete. To date the club has raised over 9,000 towards this sum through, sponsorships, donations and grants The club hopes to be able to start running passenger trains on a limited tack by this Easter and the full completion of phase 1 development is planned for late 2017 with a full official opening by Easter In operation the railway will offer a host of different opportunities for visitors; the trains themselves will vary from week to week as enthusiasts from across East Anglia, and further afield bring their model locomotives and other equipment along to run. The club intend to create a biodiverse and locally appropriate planting scheme throughout the site while also providing attractive picnic areas and interesting vistas. For local schools and youth organisations such as Scouts or Cadets RMRC will be available for group visits and parties. For very young children the railway will be made available for exclusive use to support curriculum topics and learning outside the classroom. Ivan Hewlett, Founder and Chairman of the RMRC said about the project: it is not by chance that this project is being established in St Neots, all those involved have real belief that our town is a great place to live and raise families, we hope to make it even better through our efforts. The club are aiming to have a small section of the track prepared in time for Easter in order to operate train ride for local families during the school holiday. The railway is then due to operate - in limited form until the project is completed - at weekends and during school holidays between Easter and October half term. To keep up to date with the project developments and find out when they will be operating follow RMRC on and look out for promotional posters around the town over the coming months.
