3 COACH RAMBLES Coach Rambles take place once a month on Sundays, and offer somewhat more than the normal Sunday walk; the opportunity to visit different walking areas further afield, a relaxing journey with no driving, a linear walk, and a pleasant social occasion including a drink, a meal in a pub. There is usually a choice of three types of walk: B walk: about 6 to 8 miles, leisurely pace, often time at end for visits to teashops, etc. A walk: average walk, approx. 10 miles, not too strenuous, but will include hills. A+ walk: tough walk (up to 14 miles), faster, more strenuous and usually over more difficult terrain than other walks, but often on higher ground with better views! Start times and pick-up points Coaches start 8.30 from either Leeds or Bradford depending on the destination, calling at Thornbury Barracks Roundabout at 8.45, then picking up at Leeds or Bradford at Pick-up points Leeds: Edward Street off Vicar Lane Thornbury: Thornbury Barracks Roundabout (north or south side depending on start point) Bradford: Jacobs Well car park Other pick-up points by request The coach will also call at other points en route, e.g. Huddersfield, Shipley, Bingley, Keighley, Wetherby or by request where feasible. It is hoped that members from outlying RA Groups will also be able to join the coach rambles if suitable pick-up points can be arranged for them. Cost, payment etc. The present coach fare (collected on the journey) is 10, 11, or 12 depending on numbers. The cost of the meal is usually around (collected at the table). Other arrangements Packed lunch is required and it is advisable to bring spare clothes and footwear to change into after the walk. These can be left on the coach during the day. Booking a place on coach rambles To book a place on a coach ramble contact Val Bamforth ( ) or Hilary Bulmer ( ) Cancellation Places on coach rambles may be cancelled up to 7.00 p.m. on the Friday before the Sunday of the ramble. This allows time for the place to be filled. Unfortunately, if anyone cancels after that time or fails to turn up, they will be expected to pay the full fare either by sending money with someone else, sending payment to Hilary Bulmer or Val Bamforth (cheque payable to WR Ramblers Association), or by paying on the next coach ramble. Walkers should be adequately equipped, wearing suitable footwear, and carrying clothing appropriate to the weather conditions. Food and drink should be brought on full-day rambles. Members and walkers are reminded that they attend walks in this Programme at their own risk and that they are responsible for their own safety. Dogs may be brought on walks subject to the prior agreement of the Leader. Leaders are strongly advised not to permit dogs on a walk where there is the possibility of cows being met. Where dogs are permitted, they must be on a short lead at all times and the dog owner, not the Leader, nor The Ramblers are responsible for the dog s behaviour and any liability for any claims etc. Walks in this Programme are circular unless otherwise stated. Alterations or additions to the Programme will, if possible, be published in the West Riding Rambler, the WR Area Website www. ramblersyorkshire.org, or local Press. Full programmes of some Group walks may be obtained from Group Secretaries.

5 Please volunteer to lead a walk by contacting your local group walks co-ordinator or the Social & Rambles Committee, see p1. In severe weather conditions the walk may be cancelled. If in doubt, phone the Leader NOTES FOR WALK LEADERS All walk leaders should: Pre-walk the route so that he/she is confident in leading the walk at a suitable pace in the time available, with appropriate rests. Try to arrange the start of the walk to co-ordinate with public transport, and give public transport information when required. Announce at the start that no one should walk ahead of the Leader without permission. Count the number of walkers at the start and check numbers regularly. He/she should appoint a back marker who knows the route and carries a whistle. Reserve the right not to accept in the party anyone he/she considers to be inadequately equipped. Ensure, whilst the walk is crossing or walking along roads, that standard safety rules are observed. Carry the following equipment as appropriate to the terrain: map, compass, simple first aid kit, whistle, torch, watch, spare energy-giving food, spare clothing, survival bag & mobile phone May alter his/her plans to suit the circumstances, e.g. bad weather or accident. Arrange toilet stops as necessary along the route. Try to give information of historical, geographical or environmental interest on the walk. Report footpath obstructions to the appropriate Group Footpath Officer (see end section for details). Understand that the aim of rambling is enjoyment, not merely achievement.. Non-members and under 18s All walks in this booklet are open to members of the public. However, it is expected that any member of the public doing more than three walks will apply to become a member of The Ramblers.
