A former 18th century cotton spinning mill village, New Lanark has undergone regeneration since 1974, returning this World Heritage Site to a picture perfect collection of homes and public spaces. The village was founded in 1785 by Glasgow businessman David Dale and entrepreneur Richard Arkwright. In 1800, the forward-thinking Robert Owen took over management of New Lanark and introduced his Great Experiment, implementing social, moral, educational and workplace reforms. The village was unique in that the workers were given rights and care that was unheard of at the time.
