Administrative History The office of the president was created in 1870 with the founding of St. Ignatius College. Arnold Damen, S.J., served as the 1 st president from Loyola University Chicago has had 23 presidents in its 138 year history, all members of the Society of Jesus. The first 12 served as presidents of St. Ignatius College. When the college was re-chartered as Loyola University in 1909, the 12 th president, Alexander J. Burrowes, S.J., became the 1st president of Loyola University. The 23rd and current president of Loyola University Chicago is Michael J. Garanzini, S.J., whose administration began in Samuel K. Wilson, S.J., the 17 th President of Loyola University Chicago, was born on August 20, 1882, in Chicago, Illinois. He entered the Society of Jesus on September 2, 1902, in Florissant, Missouri and was ordained on June 27, 1917, by Archbishop John Glennon in St. Louis, Missouri. Wilson received his doctorate in History in 1925 from Christ College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, England, following which he held teaching positions at various high schools and colleges. Before becoming president of Loyola University Chicago in 1933, Wilson served as a member of the faculty, chair of the History Department, and Dean of the Graduate School. In 1943, he was assigned to the University of Detroit.
