2 Introduction Te purpose of tis pack is to provide detailed information about Magna s exibition and assist you in identifying key aspects to incorporate into your visit. Magna developed from an idea in te early 990s to establis a steel eritage centre alongside a working steelworks as a way of bringing investment and employment to te region. Closure of te Templeboroug Melting Sop in 99 and te loss of tousands of jobs provided impetus for its development. Te concept of Magna as an interactive science centre evolved and Magna Science Adventure Centre opened in April 00. Key factors beind Magna s development are: Te creation of an exciting environment blending science and design, wic encourages visitors to entuse about science, engineering and tecnology. To gain full value from your educational visit please consider te following issues wen planning your day. Some parts of Magna can be cold, oters are wet and most pupils want to experience te adventure playground. 5 Risk Assessment Magna as identified potential areas of risk to assist teacers in carrying out teir own risk assessments. All teacers are advised to make a free preview visit to make appropriate plans for teir group. Teacers are reminded tat wilst Magna staff are located around te building it is teacers and accompanying carers wo ave overall responsibility for teir group at all times. Additional activities suc as worksops and sows ave separate risk assessments as tey are led directly by Magna staff. If your group as particular special needs ten please discuss tese wit our bookings team in advance of te visit. Magna advises te following ratio of adults to pupils: for primary scools : 6, and for secondary scools :0. Hazard Crossing te roadway to access transport / play facility. Darkness and size of te building. Evacuation procedures Magna is a large building it is possible to get disorientated and lost. Magna used to be a steelworks. Some areas can be cold in winter. During te meet and greet process, groups are reminded wat it is like in te main building. Magna as approved evacuation procedures in place. Te alarm is a voice message not a siren. Teacers and carers stay in close supervision. During meet and greet Magna staff advise pupils on wat to do if tey get lost. Tere are first aid kits in eac pavilion. Magna as first aid staff on site. Adequate supervision of pupils. A number of plastic aprons are available for younger pupils. Magna advises teacers to pre-warn groups. During te meet and greet process, pupils are reminded not to climb on walkway barriers. Barriers keep all visitors a safe distance away. Te sow lasts for minutes and runs once per our. In between sows tere are no special effects. Furter Action by Group Leaders Facilities are sited on different levels involving te use of stairs. Tere is a lot of walking. Te Face of Steel and Big Melt Sow contain sort sequences of strobe ligting. All visitors wit impaired mobility Pupils Staff Lifts are available, weelcairs can be borrowed from Magna s main reception area. An alternative entrance avoids te Face of Steel. Magna staff can advise on te timings of te Big Melt Sow. Sci-Tek and Aqua-Tek are play areas, designed to be pysically callenging. Aqua-Tek s water is treated wit clorine. Pupils Pupils Staff Play surfacing complies wit current regulations. Close adult supervision is advised. Sci-Tek may be closed during icy weater. Magna advises teacers to pre-warn groups. 26 Steel Heritage Fascinating facts about te Magna site Magna is set in te massive buildings of te former Templeboroug steelworks, producing steel until 99. Did you know tat: Te Magna site as been occupied and used by people for tousands of years. A bronze age canoe was excavated on site during te 960s. Te first Roman fort on te site was built around 0AD, later ones were occupied until te t Century. Various forms of metal-making ave taken place ere for centuries. During te First World War demand for steel rocketed and te steelworks went into production in 96. Women worked as crane drivers and furnace operators during te Second World War. Originally te factory oused open eart furnaces tat were later replaced by 6 electric arc furnaces. It was te longest open eart melting sop in Europe and became te world s biggest steelmaking plant. In its eyday, 0,000 workers were employed on te site, working for Steelos, wic stood for Steel, Peec and Tozer. Te building as it stands today is 0 metres long, metres wide and metres ig at its tallest point. It is only a fraction of te original size, Steelos stretced for a mile on bot sides of te Seffield Road! Te building oused E furnace, wic acieved a world record for steel production in December 977. Te Templeboroug Melting Sop Orientation Being so large te steelworks was described by landmarks te Seffield End and te Roteram End Te building was made of bays for scrap, furnaces and casting. Te melting took place at te Seffield End and is spectacularly reconstructed during te Big Melt Sow. Te main entrance to Magna is te area were te casting and cooling of te billets - steel bars - took place. Looking Around Magna Originally tere were cranes on te site. Look up and you ll see some of te giant ooks wic would ave carried uge ladles olding 80 tons of molten steel at over 000 o C. Tere are still a number of tese ladles to be seen in and around Magna. Also notice te trunnions - te ears on te side - used by te cranes to pick up te ladle. Opposite te restaurant is te maze of pipes and macinery tat was te secondary steelmaker, were steel was refined to alter its final properties. Stretcing over te top of Magna is a giant dust extractor. Local people regularly complained tat teir wasing would be red a few ours after anging it out to dry. 27 Outdoors - Sci-Tek and Aqua-Tek Sci-Tek Designed and built by Kompan, Sci-Tek is te largest playground of its kind in Europe. Its play features promote tougtful and interactive outdoor play. Te play features are built wit a wide range of textures, colours and sapes. Te ascent or descent of features involves a number of active coices. Slides are curved not straigt so cildren experience canging forces on descent. Rotating play features are generally angled rater tan flat, requiring cildren to adjust teir balance wilst in motion. Swings face inwards to promote co-operative play. Trampoline nets are coupled togeter so cildren feel unusual force combinations and work togeter. Additional Learning Sci-Tek is also a great area for inspiring pupils engaged on projects about design, materials and safety. Wic materials are used for te features? Wat properties of tose materials make tem ideal? How is te play surface and feature layout designed to reduce risk? Aqua-Tek Loosely temed on a trip around te water works, Aqua-Tek is an exciting wet adventure area adjacent to Sci-Tek. Pupils can squirt, soak, mist and drenc teir way around te park. Weter it s gentle fountains, a ground guser, or dumping buckets pupils are going to get wet, very wet. Using Aqua-Tek Aqua-Tek is open from Easter to October. Tere is a small, family-cange facility by Aqua-Tek, but scools are also welcome to use te main toilet facilities in Magna s entrance. Te water is treated wit clorine.
