2 ABOUT THE CITY: ABOUT THE CITY AND AIRPORT CONNECTIVITY NAME OF THE AIRPORT (STATE) : KARNAL AIRPORT, HARYANA (I) INTRODUCTION: Karnal is a city and the headquarters of Karnal District in the state of Haryana. Karnal is governed by a municipal corporation that comes under the Karnal Metropolitan Region. Historically, Karnal is said to have been founded during ancient times by the Kauravas in the Mahabharata era for the king Karna, a mythological hero and a key figure in the epic tale. Karnal is one of Historical Districts of Haryana. It is also known as a city of 'Daanveer Karn'. It is known all over the world for production of Rice, Wheat and Milk. It is also known for agriculture research Institutions like NDRI, CSSRI, Wheat Research Directorate, National Bureau of Animal Genetics Resources, Sugarcane Breeding Institute etc. Karnal is important city on Delhi Ambala Rail Line & Sher Shah Suri Marg (G. T. Road), connected with all important places in the country. It is 123 Kilometer from Delhi & 130 Kilometer from Chandigarh. Karnal District lies on the western Bank of river Yamuna which once flows about 11 Kilometer. to the east forming eastern boundary of the district. The river Yamuna separates Haryana from Utter Pardesh. The Karnal Distt. including Panipat lies between 29'09'50" and 29'50' North latitude and 76 31' 15" and 77 12'45" East longitude, its height from sea level is between 235 and 252 meters. Karnal Distt. is surrounded by Kurukshetra District on its north-west, jind & Kaithal Distt. on its west, Panipat Distt. on its south and Utter Pradesh on east. (II) ABOUT THE DISTRICT POPULATION, ECONOMY, INDUSTRY & TOURISM POTENTIAL: POPULATION: According to the 2011 census Karnal district has a population of 15,06,323. ECONOMY & INDUSTRY: Economy is maintained by agriculture. Rice, wheat and milk are the major agrarian products. Karnal district is also famous for leather and leather products. The city is also famous for its lush green pastures and production of high quality Basmati rice. In addition, it is an important centre for the manufacture of agricultural implements and its spares. Karnal district Consists of three sub divisions viz. Karnal, Assandh and Indri comprising of six development blocks. The district is basically an agricultural producing area and the major dependence of the people is on land. Prior to the formation of Haryana State, the industrial development in the district was negligible and with the provision of infrastructure viz. Roads and Power etc., by the Haryana Govt. a number of industrial units have come up in the district. Small Scale Sector There are 2511 small scale industries in the district providing employment to about persons and producing various types of goods such as agricultural implements, Electronic Motors, Submersible Pumps, Welding Electrodes, Card Board/Mill Board, Paints, Edible and non-edible Oils, Leather and Non-Leather Footwear, Rubber Hawaii Chapels, Pressure Cookers, Kitchen Cuttlery, Finished Leather, Life Saving Medicines, Wheat Products, Wooden & Steel Furniture, Rice, Milk 1

3 Products, Wire Netting, Washing Soap etc. Agricultural Implements The Karnal District is famous for its agricultural implements, as these are popular throughout the country. The small scale units of Karnal district meet major requirement of the whole country for various types of power driven and bullock driven agricultural implements. Almost all type of agricultural implements are produced here including Harrow, Disc, Tiller / Tyne, Seed Drilling Machine, Zero tillage, Leveler, agricultural springs and Laser guided scraper buckets. There are about 250 SSI units engaged in the manufacturing of agricultural implements and parts thereof. Annual turn-over of Agricultural SSI units in Karnal is more than Rs. 500 crores. Leather Industry Karnal is also famous for its leather shoes and Liberty Group is pioneer in this industry at Karnal. Shoes and shoe uppers manufactured by Liberty Group are being exported to various countries such as Hungry, U.K., Dubai, Singapore, Kenya, Saudi Arabia, Russia, Greece to the tune of about 50 crores. The annual production of Liberty Group is 500 crores. TOURISM POTENTIAL: Karnal is one of the most famous tourist destinations in North India. Apart from being an important research centre, it is home to several interesting monuments and buildings. You can visit many sites such as Kos Minar, Kalandar Shah s tomb, the Karan Tal, and Babar s Masjid. The main highlight of the town is the Karna Tal (lake). Legend has it that it was here that the mythological hero Karna, after whom Karnal is named, gave away alms to the poor and needy. Managed by the Haryana Tourism Authority, it offers several facilities including dining. You can also visit Pukka Pul, located at about 7 kms from the city. There is a shrine here which plays venue to several events and therefore, it is very popular with the local people. Another must visit offered by Karnal tourism is the Kalandar Shah s tomb made of pure marble. The complex also contains a mosque which is believed to have been built by the Alamgir. Then there is the Miran Sahib s tomb, which also houses a mosque. Karnal is also home to several religious sites such as Durga Bhawani Temple and Gurudwara Manji Sahib. The British too have left their imprints in Karnal. You can visit the Karnal Cantonment Church Tower and the Christian cemetery. For some peaceful moments, you can head to the Oasis Complex, and if your holiday is incomplete without a round of golf, you will find the perfect destination in Karnal golf course. Karnal tourism offers several scenic places that you can visit including Gogripur, and Taraori. 2
