2 ABOUT THE CITY AND AIRPORT CONNECTIVITY NAME OF THE AIRPORT (STATE): CHANDIGARH AIRPORT (PUNJAB) ABOUT THE CITY: (I) INTRODUCTION: Chandigarh is a city and a union territory of India that serves as the capital of the Indian states of Haryana and Punjab. As a union territory, the city is governed directly by the Union Government and is not part of either state. Chandigarh, the dream city of India's first Prime Minister, Sh. Jawahar Lal Nehru, was planned by the famous French architect Le Corbusier. Picturesquely located at the foothills of Shivaliks, it is known as one of the best experiments in urban planning and modern architecture in the twentieth century in India. Chandigarh derives its name from the temple of "Chandi Mandir" located in the vicinity of the site selected for the city. The deity 'Chandi', the goddess of power and a fort of 'garh' laying beyond the temple gave the city its name "Chandigarh-The City Beautiful". The city has a pre-historic past. The gently sloping plains on which modern Chandigarh exists was in the ancient past, a wide lake ringed by a marsh. The fossil remains found at the site indicate a large variety of aquatic and amphibian life, which was supported by that environment. About 8000 years ago the area was also known to be a home to the Harappans. (II) ABOUT THE DISTRICT POPULATION, ECONOMY, INDUSTRY & TOURISM POTENTIAL: POPULATION: As of 2011 census, Chandigarh had a population of 10,55,450. ECONOMY: Chandigarh Economy has been growing at a very fast pace for its GDP growth rate is around 8.3%. The Economy of Chandigarh depends for its revenue on the agricultural, industrial, animal husbandry, fishing, IT, and tourism sectors. The Economy of the city of Chandigarh gets its revenue from the agricultural sector. The various kinds of crops grown in Chandigarh are maize, vegetables, paddy, and wheat. The industrial sector has thus given a major boost to the Economy in Chandigarh. The Economy of Chandigarh gets its revenue from the animal husbandry sector for this is an important industry in the city. The various kinds of livestock found in Chandigarh are goats, pigs, cattle, bullocks, buffaloes, and pigs. They provide the important animal origin food like meat and milk. The Economy in Chandigarh gets its revenue from the IT sector. The city has the Rajiv Gandhi Chandigarh Technology Park that is full with big players in the IT field like Infosys, Net Solutions, IBM Daksh, and FCS Software Solutions Ltd. This sector has contributed to the growth of the Economy of the city of Chandigarh. The Economy of Chandigarh also depends for its revenue on the tourism sector. The city has great many tourists spots like Rock Garden, Sukhna Lake, Rose 1

3 Garden, Pinjore Garden, and Tower of Shadows. Thus the sector of tourism has helped in the growth of the Economy in Chandigarh. INDUSTRY: There were 2100 SSI units in the year There are 15 Large & Medium Scale industries along with two Public Sector Enterprises (PSEs), five functional Export Oriented Units Some of the important industrial products are hosiery and knitting machine needles, wool tops, engineering items, electric meters, auto parts, Tyre & tubes, crockery, bicycle and cycle parts, house fitting items, electronic items, cables, toiletries, wires, defence items, antibiotics, biomedical equipment s, food and beverages and hardware. TOURISMPOTENTIAL: SUKHNA LAKE Sailing at Sukhna Lake, Sukhna Lake is located in Sector 1, adjoining the Rock Garden near the foothills of Shivalik Hills. Sukhna is an artificial lake. This 3 km rain-fed lake was created in 1958 by damming the Sukhna Choe, a seasonal stream coming down from the Shivalik Hills. It has The Garden of Silence within it. Sukhna Lake is the venue for many festive celebrations. The most popular is the Mango Festival held during the monsoons. ROCK GARDEN The Rock Garden is situated in the middle of the Capitol Complex. It is also known as Nek Chand Rock Garden after its founder. It has numerous sculptures made by using a variety of different discarded waste materials like frames, mudguards, forks, handle bars, metal wires, play marbles, porcelain, auto parts, broken bangles etc. Nek Chand himself went up the Shivalik hills and got different stones and materials with which he started building the garden. ZAKIR HUSSAIN ROSE GARDEN or simply Rose Garden is named after the former President of India, Zakir Hussain. It is situated in Sector 16. The garden is known to be the greatest of its types in Asia. The garden is said to be spread about thirty to forty acres containing nearly 825 varieties of roses in it and more than 32,500 varieties of other medicinal plants and trees. PARROT BIRD SANCTUARY CHANDIGARH Parrot Bird Sanctuary Chandigarh is a bird sanctuary which is located in sector 21 Chandigarh India. It is notified under Section 18 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, It is habitat of thousands of parrots. It is the second wildlife sanctuary in the city after Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary. LEISURE VALLEY A continuum of various theme gardens, Leisure Valley is a linear park over 8 km long which starts from Sector 1 in the north and leaves Chandigarh at its southern most edge. It consists of many theme parks, botanical gardens and green belts, including Rajendra Park in Sector 1, the Bougainvillea Garden in Sector 3 and the Physical Fitness Trails in Sector 10, among others. 2
