1 The Great Dolomite Road An Amazing 10 Day, 9 Night Tour of the Great Dolomite Road including the Stelvio Pass Until the turn of the century, only a few of the numerous valleys in the Dolomites were connected by a road. The narrow canyons and inhospitable conditions created serious problems for the road builders. It was not until the mid 19th century that they found out how to connect the valleys by roads and bridges and make them traversable. The Viennese Dr. Theodor Christomannos first had the idea to connect the former Austrian Dolomites with a single road, the foundation stone of the great Dolomites Road was laid, which leads today through the most beautiful regions of the Dolomites. In addtion to the activities connected with the Mille Miglia, you ll experience some great drives, see some amazing sights and enjoy some wonderful Italian food. The Great Dolomite Road runs through the Dolomites from Bozen to Cortina d Ampezzo. The Great Dolomites Road project started at the end of the 19th century after trying for several years to cross over the canyons of the Eggental Valley using suspension bridges. The originator of the project was the Viennese Dr. Theodor Christomannos, who first proposed to connect the Austrian Dolomites with a road. In 1896 the road from the Eggental Valley to the Karerpass was fully developed and, since 1909, the 110-kilometres long road has run from Bozen over the Eggental Valley to the Fassa Valley in Trentino and further on to Veneto and Cortina d Ampezzo. 2 Tour Itinerary & Suggested Drives Please note: All routings and excursions are purely our suggestions, it is entirely your choice as to whether or not you follow our suggested routings or do our suggested excursions, albeit on the day we have indicated, or at all! Day 1 - P& Ferry Crossing from Dover to Calais followed by the drive through Northern France to Nancy. vernight at the Novotel Nancy uest with dinner included at the hotel. Day 2 - Breakfast followed by the drive from Nancy to San Valentino alla Muta. vernight at the Hotel Stocker with dinner included at the Hotel. Day 3 - Breakfast followed by the full day to enjoy the Stelvio Pass & surrounding drives. Return to the Hotel Stocker late afternoon with dinner included at the hotel. Starting in Bolzano the route takes your through some of Europe s most spectaculr mountain scenery. It runs for about 140 kilometres (86 miles) and carries the road numbers SS241 (Bolzano to Val di Fassa) and SS48 (Val di Fassa to Cortina d Ampezzo). vernight at the Lajadira Hotel in Cortina d Ampezzo with dinner included at the hotel. Day 8 - Breakfast followed by a visit to Schwangau, home to the famous fairy tale castle of King Ludwig. The routing then takes to Saarbrucken where you will overnight at the Mercure Saarbrucken Sud with dinner included at the hotel.
