3 Greeting. Dear Schuylkill County Tourism Partner, Fifty-four years ago we became your designated tourism promotion agency working to bring visitors and their dollars to Schuylkill County. Over that time, a great deal has changed at the visitor s bureau and in the tourism industry but one thing remains the same; we re telling our community s stories. Schuylkill County is an American Original and we work to ensure the world knows it. In an age of advanced technology, an age of excess, where everyone has everything at their fingertips, standing out in the crowd is imperative. And we do just that. Schuylkill County is a convenient destination for a fun uplifting experience to a variety of people. Our rich history, unique attractions and lush mountains afford us the ability to offer an authentic travel experience visitors crave, especially the heritage tourist. The heritage tourist is defined as a special interest traveler within the broader tourism industry and is someone who desires a real world experience through the lens of history and culture. Heritage tourism activities include visiting the following places: art galleries, theaters, and museums; historic sites and structures; communities and landmarks; natural and scenic parks; cultural events, festivals and fairs; ethnic communities and neighborhoods; architectural and archaeological treasures. Heritage tourism is interested in historic places, traditions, art forms, celebrations, and experiences that portray the nation and its people. Heritage tourists travel longer (5.2 nights vs. 3.4 nights), spend more money per person ($623 vs. $457), are more likely to be older and educated, and are more likely to use a hotel or bed and breakfast (62% vs. 55%) and account for 56% of the population. (Travel Industry Association of America). While telling our stories to the heritage tourist and outdoor recreation market, we ve managed to make more people aware of Schuylkill County both here and from a distance. Our robust social media strategy has earned us a significant following. Our promotions continue to move the needle. More hotel rooms continue to sell year after year. More visitors and their dollars- find their way to our many attractions and events, restaurants and lodging facilities. Thanks to our Board of Directors, financially, we are on solid ground, allowing us to continue make larger investments in promotion and create a larger impact as one component of our county s comprehensive economic development plan. 7 Media Partnerships. With tight media and ad budgets, public relations is more important than ever. It s a cost effective way of getting information about Schuylkill County out to the media, our target audiences and our community. Social media, in particular, is extremely effective for us. However we are fortunate to have many media partners that support the tourism industry and it s economic impact in Schuylkill County. Their contribution, support and partnership make it possible for us to continue to tell Schuylkill County s story.
