4 OBJECTIVES Create a high-speed rail corridor of Increased Capacity: EIDOMENI ALBANIA FYROM IV X BULGARY PROMACHONAS Equipped with modern signaling, telecommanding, telecommunication and electrification systems fulfilling the interoperability requirements of the European railways. PATRΑS THESSALONIKI ATHENS Backbone of the greek railway network Interconnects the big urban centers of the country and areas with significant growth in the primary and secondary sectors Links to the major freight centers, main ports and Trans-European corridors (ΙV and X). Part of the high speed TEN-T network Serves suburban transports of the major cities (Athens, Thessaloniki Patras)

6 EIDOMENI POLIKASTRO PROMACHONAS STRIMONAS THESSALONIKI Significant funding under the 4 programming periods The implementation progress of the new double electrified railway line Patras-Athens- Thessaloniki 700 km, has as following: 486 km or 70% completed PATRAS DOMOKOS TITHOREA RODODAFNI KIATO PIRAEUS ATHENS SPATA 180 km or 26% in advanced construction phase: The most difficult parts of the rail axis, as they pass through territories with a strong geographical terrain 28 km or 4% in tender phase of the infrastructure projects

BENEFITS Significant reduction in travel time Athens-Thessaloniki: 7h 30 before the projects, 4h 30 today 3h 30 in the final situation Athens-Patras: 3h 30 before the projects 2h 00 in the final situation Improvement of the customer service level in terms of travel confort, transport safety and reliability of services Contribution to regional development of the country and strengthening its role as a transit center of combined freight transport in South East Europe Significant energy and environmental benefits, due to the diversion of passenger and freight transport volume from other transport means to the rail

21 Co-funded by the Trans-European Network ( TEN-T) in the frame of the multiannual programme (C(2008)7574 Commission Decision) Total budget of 13 million euros The action involves the rail corridor 22: Athens-Thessaloniki-Kulata- Sofia-Craiova-Budapest-Praha

23 Main objective of the Action The upgrade of the Railway Axis 22, which will consist, along its biggest part, of a double railway line of a design speed at the range of 160 km/h,equipped with electrification and ETCS-level 2 systems Beneficiaries of the E.U. Contribution Four countries (Greece, Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary) Co-beneficiaries OSE & ΕRGA OSE S.A. (Republic of Greece) NRIC (Republic of Bulgaria) CFR S.A. (Romania) MAV (Republic of Hungary)

24 Coordinator of the whole Action, according the Decision, is the Republic of Greece Coordinator of the co-beneficiaries is OSE, acting as president of the Steering Committee. A European Coordinator for the whole project of the P.P 22 has been nominated. The co-beneficiaries signed on 31/12/2010 a Cooperation Agreement, including the terms and the implementation procedures of the action The Ministers of Transport of the four Member States signed a Multilateral Declaration concerning the acceleration of the problematic sections along the P.P. 22.

25 Physical Object of the co-funded Action The action is implementing under two phases (A and B) PHASE A, implemented by OSE Budget: 1 million euros It includes the socio-economical, commercial, operational, technical and financial assessment of the upgrade of Railway Axis 22 PHASE B, to be implemented by the relevant Member States Budget: 12 million euros It includes technical studies based on the findings of the Phase A Assessment Study.
