1 Southern Maryland Sailing Association, Inc. P.O. Box 262, Solomons, MD Website: Editor: Judy Pedersen the clew JUNE 2005 Volume 35, No 6 COMMODORE T his month I want to briefly talk about volunteerism within our club. First and foremost, thanks to those of you who take time to volunteer in SMSA. It is obvious by your work and continuing efforts that you feel a sense of pride in our club and the value it provides to you as a sailor. While many of us have a variety of obligations personally and professionally, SMSA cannot continue to provide quality programs without the input and assistance of more of our general membership. For those of you who haven't yet found the right opportunity to get involved, the ones who are shouldering the bulk of the burden very much need your help. It makes no sense to me given the size of our club roster, coupled with the participation at many of our events, that we still have cruises that need leaders, races that need race committees, high school events that need help and social events that don t have new faces helping out!! Please look at the calendar for the coming months and look for ways to volunteer some of your time to one of our many programs. Your Governors are hoping to hear from you to help them run a great program. Thank you all for being a part of this great sailing club. Together, let's all work to make it even better! Barbara Roberts, Social Governor bjandcharlie@chesapeake.net WOMEN S Ladies the first race is almost upon us, Marcy Series. What I need from all is information on what boats will be making it out this year and if there is anyone who would like to race. If you are skippering a boat or would like to crew please contact me at carolsmith@gmpexpress.net or Also for this summer s on the water women's training I would like to have anyone attending the scheduled training to contact me a week prior to the session, that way I will know how many boats to line up for the training. If there are any updates will have them posted on the website forum under General. See you on the water. Carol Smith, Women s Governor carolsmith@gmpexpress.net RACING Congratulations to John & Linda Edwards and their Rhumb Punch crew (Jae-Nee Ausley, Geoff Rhodes, Erik Dahl, Laura & Shawn Stanley, John Dixon & Clarke McKinney.) They've done it again, winning the Annapolis NOOD Regatta J-29 OD class with all bullets (except one 2 nd place finish.) Great job!

4 The racing season is in full swing. We have 52 big boats and 29 small boats signed up for racing so far this year, and new members joining all the time. We have had great turnouts for Wednesday Nights with an average of 25 boats on the starting line in three classes. In the early first two small boat Thursdays, we had eight boats each. Thanks to all the Race Committee volunteers who have run races and to those who are signed up for the rest of the year! (We still need volunteers for the following races: Summer Invitational (June 26th), Geezer Squeezer (August 13th), Fall Invitational (October 23rd), and Frostbite Races #1, 2, and 4.) Screwpile is rapidly approaching July 17 th through 19th. It is, of course, SMSA s showcase regatta and one that continues to get regional, if not national, attention. Last year our Screwpile Regatta was reported on in Sailing World Magazine with a fourpage spread. LG Raley and his Screwpile Committee are working hard to put on another world-class regatta for all of us to enjoy. Thanks LG! A byproduct of the excellent reputation SMSA has gained through hosting the Screwpile Regatta is that we have been asked by the CBYRA/Annapolis Race Week Organizing Committee to serve as Race Committee on one of the four courses at Annapolis Race Week on Labor Day weekend. In addition, CBYRA recently announced that the The Screwpile Lighthouse Challenge will serve as a qualifier event for the 2005 Lloyd Phoenix Trophy. Screwpile is one of four regattas across the Bay chosen as a qualifier for this prestigious event. Well Winter just didn t look like it was going to give up its grip on things. But finally, we ve had some good days, and it looks like we re in for some nice, warm sailing days. We ll hope the wind holds out and I look forward to seeing as many boats and racers out there as possible, enjoying this great sailing/racing venue we have here in Southern Maryland. My new racer friends from Ireland, Cowes, and Boston that I met this early spring in Florida tell me I don t know how great we have it here. Even the Florida guys are jealous! You gotta love it! Jim Keen SMSA Race Governor Williwaw66@hotmail.com or fcorpen@yahoo.com ***Sail Fast.Live Slow*** CRUISING The second cruise planning meeting held on May 7 was a great success. About 30 SMSA cruisers attended enjoying a light breakfast and great camaraderie. As part of the cruising discussion we heard comments from Ron and Suzie Williams and Frank and Nancy McCabe who had just returned from their Inter-coastal Water Way cruises. We reviewed the proposed schedule presented in the Yearbook and by consolidation and additions we were able to finalize the SMSA 2005 cruising schedule. The schedule is included as part of this months Clew. I wish to thank all the cruise leaders who responded with their support. The highlights of the2005 schedule include three one-week cruises, weekend concert cruises, a mixed-couples race/cruise, an all women s cruise and the traditional Halloween cruises for both the Solomons and Potomac fleets. The first one-week cruise begins at the end of May. The 2005 schedule will be posted on our SMSA web site as well. For the new cruisers, check the schedule and contact the cruise leader for the cruise of your choice and make your intentions known. We would love to see you out on the water with us. If you have any questions on the cruising program, or for the Board of Governors, please contact me. Walt Rupp, Cruise Governor , jrupp@chesapeake.net

5 Cruise Report Island Creek Why is it that the best cruises just seem to come together? On Saturday, April 30, after an ominous start, the crews of Reflections, Koel and Njord met at Island Creek for a delightful evening and a very brisk sail home. The forecast was for rain, a thunderstorm and a possible tornado. I had my doubts, though, and was determined to not let the forecast stop the cruise--despite the fact that Njord was not quite ready for the season. We weren t able to get any sails on but did manage to get the engine started and arrived at the anchorage a few hours after Reflections who anchored the first raft. It started raining soon after our arrival and, given the forecast, I decided to break up the raft. The rain didn t last, and the thunderstorms didn t materialize. I felt bad that I had chickened out and broken up the raft. I was sitting below feeling kind of glum when Koel approached, laid along side and revived the raft. Gresh and Rene were much better prepared than Elaine and I. With the help of their dink, we were able to ferry Patty and Rich from Reflections to the new raft for a very pleasant evening of sea stories and libations. The rain came in earnest later that night and continued until the next morning. When it did end, the sky broke to a beautiful day with a fresh northwest breeze. Njord was able to bend on a headsail, and we made a pleasant run down the Patuxent to end a wonderful spring cruise. Jay and Elaine Green s/v Njord Upcoming One Week Cruise Concerts & Islands Join us for a one-week cruise that will include two River Concerts and two of the Chesapeake s islands. On June 24 th, we will be on the water by 0900, sailing to St. Mary s City/Horseshoe Bend. We will check in at 1000, 1200, and At St. Mary s, we plan to attend the Summer Solstice Concert at St. Mary s College. Bring a picnic dinner, your favorite drink, and your folding chairs for an enjoyable evening on the lawn. On the 25 th, we will sail (yes, we plan to sail) to Smith Island. High tide will be at 1640 on that day, so we can arrive in mid-afternoon and enter the channel on a rising tide. There are several docking possibilities, ranging in cost from free to $15. There is a small restaurant with crab cakes and soft shell crabs. On the 26 th, we plan to travel to Tangier Island. High tide will be at 1642, so again, we plan to arrive in mid-afternoon and take advantage of the rising tide. Mr. Parks is aware that we are coming and will have a few places for the deeper draft boats as well as slips for those of us that have shallow drafts. On the 27 th, we ll do a lay day in Tangier to enjoy Mrs. Crockett s Restaurant (more crab cakes), the ice cream shop, and the very quaint village. On the 28 th, we ll come back across the Bay to Dividing Creek. High tide will be at 0550 so we will leave Tangier early that morning. From Dividing Creek, we will go on to Mill Creek on the Great Wicomico on the 29 th, and then to the Coan River on the 30 th. We plan to go far enough up the Coan to be out of the jelly fish and to be able to swim. On Friday, July 1, we will return to St. Mary s City for the Independence Day Concert and fireworks (lots of fireworks) at the College. Plan on bringing another picnic dinner. On July 2, we will cross the Potomac to the West Yeocomico/Wilkins Creek. There you can choose to go into Pt. Kinsale Marina or to anchor out. The Marina is having a July 4 th party that evening and is expecting a crowd, but we have tentatively reserved a few slips (lest us know if you want a slip). Most of us will anchor out, enjoy the music from the marina, and see the fireworks from the neighboring marina.

6 On the 3 rd, we head to Smith Creek and anchor. Some of us will dinghy over to Scheible s and try the crab cakes at Courtney s. On the 4 th, we ll head back to our home berths. The distances for this cruise are short. Most of the nights will be on the hook. We will pass by marinas on most days so fuel and water should be available if needed.
