Sandra has been involved with the carnival for many years and the committee are delighted that she accepted the invitation to be president. The 2007 Carnival Queen is Miss Lucy Wonnacott, who attends Okehampton College as a sixth form student. Lucy with the help of her selling team sold all 800 worth of carnival queen tickets and wishes to thank all those who supported her. Lucy s first carnival was at the age of 9 months when she was a pearl in an oyster shell. She has been on family floats every year since. The Prince and Princess are Gregory Haste and Amber Morris, both of whom are 6 years old and attend Hatherleigh Primary School. Gregory and Amber are particularly excited as neither of them have been on a carnival float before. We hope that that this will be the first of many appearances in the carnival. Good luck to you all and enjoy your day.

9 A Message from the 104th Carnival President Mrs. Sandra Collier My husband, Steve, and myself moved to Hatherleigh in 1985, and were soon to realise that it was a very special place to live. Steeped in history, with many local traditions. None more so than the famous carnival with its blazing tar barrels. In 1988 I found myself helping to design and put together the Queens float where our daughter Vikki was an attendant. That was it, we were well and truly hooked! Since then we have been involved with many floats. It was a tremendous honour and came as rather a shock to be asked to be this year s President. A moment I will always cherish. This wonderful tradition stays alive due to an incredible amount of hard work behind the scenes, all year round, by the committee. To those we say a huge THANK YOU. To the many newcomers to Hatherleigh this year - WELCOME. Do get involved, soak up the atmosphere and enjoy your first Cornival. To the many folks who have enjoyed previous carnivals, lets hope 2007 is your best yet! Mrs. Sandra Collier

14 A Message from the Carnival Chairman Dear Hatherleigh Carnival Supporters, This year has been a very busy and eventful one in my role as Chairman. It takes a lot of fundraising to ensure the carnival runs from year to year and the committee and I are very grateful for your continued support. Last year s carnival was a great success with all the community taking part and bringing the town together. Health and Safety is at the forefront of many of the decisions we have to make. However, we believe that with resolve and understanding of the issue, the changes we make should not affect the overall event or your enjoyment of it. Last year the tar barrel sub-committee decided that, in order to meet Health and Safety requirements, all barrel pullers and frame carriers would wear an official t-shirt which they would receive after attending a briefing meeting. This had a great impact and we were delighted with the support that we received from the tar barrel team. During the year we have held many events which we hope were entertaining and gave something back to the community. At the festival we held a Crepe Paper Workshop which showed how to cut and stick crepe paper; this was well attended and great interest was shown. We are very keen for anyone who would like to build a tableaux to contact any member of the committee who will give you one of our float building guides remember everyone had to start somewhere! Our Island Park Parties continue to go from strength to strength and next year s date is provisionally booked for Saturday 16th August This year we also held our first ever Royalty Variety Performance. At this evening our Queen for 2007, Miss Lucy Wonnacott, was introduced. On behalf of the committee I would like to congratulate Lucy for selling all 800 worth of Queen s tickets. Thank you and well done! Our Prince and Princess for this year are Gregory Haste and Amber Morris who are both looking forward to their first appearance in the carnival. Our President is Mrs Sandra Collier accompanied by her husband Steve. They are staunch carnival supporters and have been involved with the carnival for many years. Good Luck to all of them! Anyone who wishes to help with the marshalling on carnival night please contact Mandy, Dawn or Myself - we are very grateful for your assistance. For everybody s enjoyment and safety I would ask for your co-operation on carnival day by following the marshal s instructions and complying with the parking restrictions. Finally, I would like to thank both the main committee and the sub-committee for all their hard work and dedication throughout the year. Wishing you an enjoyable and safe carnival Mark Reddaway The Carnival Committee would like to say a big Thank You! to everyone who has supported this programme.

17 A Message from our 2006 Queen:- For me, Carnival is my favourite time of year and for as long as I can remember there has always been a buzz of excitement in our household around this time of year. Last year, Carnival day was both nerve-wracking and exciting in equal measure and the weather was fab which was a bonus! I hope Lucy s day is just as brilliant and I wish her the best of luck for the year ahead. Hannah Winser, Carnival Queen 2006 Prince and Princess Jack Moyse and Chelsea Connor

21 The Tar Barrel Sub-Committee 2007 The aim of the tar barrel sub-committee is to work alongside the main committee to ensure the future of the carnival and to keep the barrels rolling. Throughout the year the tar barrel committee carry out their own fundraising and this year saw the Hatherleigh Tar Barrels First World Tour take place, with the team pulling the barrels to Iddesleigh and back again. This was the first time the barrels have ever left the streets of Hatherleigh and was an extremely successful event with hundreds of pounds being raised. Last year the tar barrel team were resplendent in their official t-shirts which were only given to those attending a health and safety briefing meeting. Look out for the new design worn by the team this year.
