This Friday several boats will head to Laishley Marina in Punta Gorda under the direction of Vice Commodore Terry Lappin. On Sunday it's on to Boca Grande Marina. This is a close trip and one we always enjoy. One more lunch bunch remains, that coming on April 26th to Bowditch Point Park on the north tip of Fort Myers Beach. Thanks to Nils and Jean Kin for leading the group to Matanzas Inn this past Tuesday. We had seven boats and 40 people. All of our events have been well attended and I most have noticed the enthusiasm this spring. We have had large numbers cruising, more new members at the lunch bunches, and great dinner crowds. I also can't say enough by way of appreciation for how the Maxwells have organized and will lead the Keys trip in May. Jackie and I will have to miss that one due to grandparent duties in New York and South Carolina that same time. This summer some will leave and some of us will be here. The yacht club meetings will still be held on the first Wednesday of the month, in conjunction with the family night dinners at the club. The time is usually 6:30. Already we look to the "fall season" with the HUGH (did I say that) trip to the BVI s with 100 people and 20 boats and to the Naples cruise November Bob and Dee Moore tell me they already have 17 boats and three more places available with 5 couples staying at the hotel. Though some were questioning if they liked it, we all agreed that after we discussed it, we did get a lot out of it and rather enjoyed it. We will meet on May 1st and then not until November 6th. 3 Silver Stars by Craig Anderson Silver Stars is an organization of past commodores, both from GHYC and any other yacht club. At our April meeting we had the opportunity to welcome new GHYC member Chris Palmer to Silver Stars. He was past commodore of Little Harbor YC in Portsmouth, N.H.. Our last project was to organize the Fleet-in and Fleet Review in cooperation with GHYC. It was a great weekend event with over 155 GHYC members participating. Our next major project is the AMI Charity Auction to be held at the GHYC February, 2014 dinner meeting. This is a long way off; however when you consider summer, then a busy GHYC fall calendar, time is short so we need to get going now. We need to start developing the major bid items, and would like to have at least 8 next year. We have found the items where a group of YC members can participate are the most popular. We will still have the silent auction with member support. We are asking all GHYC members to start thinking of possible auction items, especially ones that might encourage group bidding. If you gave an idea please contact me at treadnwater@aol.com Social Committee by Sheri Miller French & Judi Hughes The April monthly dinner meeting featured a luau theme, with leis and punch during cocktail hour outside the pool area and dinner at 7PM in the members dining room amid tables of stargazer lilies, candles, and miniature parasols all carrying out the Hawaiian theme. Ninety eight members were in attendance for this delicious buffet style tropical dinner prepared by Chef Scott. We also enjoyed a Fish Fry on the island on March 29 th as an optional item for those people who wanted to have a more casual event. Each member brought their own special dish to share. Approximately 50 people enjoyed this event with the sunshine, blue skies and lovely sunset. A good time was had by all. Our next buffet dinner meeting will be May 7 th with the theme Bon Voyage. This will be our final organized dinner meeting for the season. Please plan to make your reservation direct with the club for this event. Our summer season for June, July, August and September will be reserved direct through the club on the first Wednesday of each month. 4 Rear Commodore s Report by Gary Morgan Gulf Harbour Yacht Club / Yachting Club of America GHYC has become a member of the Yachting Club of America, The oldest Existing Yacht Club Register in America and Yachting s Reciprocity Guide. This association will open some of the doors to marina s we could not patronize before. Each of our members will have access to the member s only section of the YCA website. David Kelley will be issuing cards before our winter season is over for interested members. Extended Cruises April and May Punta Gorda, Boca Grande April 19-23, now led by Terry and Marilyn Lappin, terrylappin@msn.com to Laishley Park Marina, and Boca Grande Marina. Final plans are being made with the aid of Treadnwater. Florida Key s May lead by the Maxwell s, Jt2ma@msn.com will cruise to Marathon and Key West. What better way to compliment a great winter cruising season than a finale in the Key s. I would personally like to thank all the cruise leaders taking on the responsibility of making the Extended Cruise Program a success this season. I also want to recognize the extra support it takes to host one of these events. The many people behind the hosts that make special arrangements for dinners and activities thank you. You hear it every day, and I agree that we are all blessed to have the people, facilities and the weather to enjoy the cruising life here in south Florida. GHYC Membership Database by Gail Bernstein The yacht club website is slowly moving into the 21st century! Several of us, along with an outside programmer, have been developing a yacht club membership database. One of our goals is for you to be able to keep your contact information current throughout the year instead of just updating a printed roster once a year. We are still in the first stage of the project, but the database is ready for use by the general membership. The database is available only to yacht club members. In order to use it you must log in with a user ID and password. Step 1: Read the database login and instructions available on the home page of our website. Just click on the Member Login Instructions. Step 2: On the menu bar you will see a new option on the far right side: Member Login. When you move your curser over Member Login it will turn from white to gold. Click on the gold Member Login. Step 3: Follow the instructions to login and change your login password to a private password of your choosing. If you need any assistance with the database, give me a call or send me an . 5 Gulf Harbour Fishing Club by Chip Graddy The Gulf Harbour Fishing Club ended the season by braving some stormy weather. Not long after the tornado warnings were lifted and the rain stopped, club members Phil Fischler and Steve Muench shared their Bass fishing knowledge with the club, including demonstrations of ideal artificial baits. The lucky members who braved the weather were rewarded for their attendance by non-stop action. The 10 fishermen each caught a few nice Bass in less than one hour of fishing. It doesn t get any better than that! Many of the fish were nice sized like the one Mike Newes is holding in this photo. Year-round residents of Southwest Florida get to enjoy the terrific fishing that accompanies the warm weather of late spring and summer. Snook and Tarpon fishing will heat up with the water temperature and those members who stay in town will have lots of opportunities to target these prized game fish. Fleet Captain s Report by Tom Auda As most of you are aware the lunch bunch cruise to Cabbage Key was canceled due to inclement weather. Since a leader had not volunteered for this LB, I was going to lead it. When family issues became pressing and I needed to leave town, the Hughes' and Rand's stepped up and helped me out in a big way and I m grateful to them. Parrot Key LB was led flawlessly by Vasiliki Ayotte and Roxanne Jones. I do not have the numbers of this trip with me and will have to report this at a later date. Niles Kin led the LB to Matanza Inn on the 10th of this month. My best wishes to Jean for a speedy recovery from her hip operation. The CPR class had 21 people signed up and 10 attended March 27 th. I m told Todd Coulter did an excellent job making a very serious topic fun and interesting. He additionally went over the use of an AED and basic First Aid. We may consider having this class annually, or possibly every other year depending on interest, and as an outgrowth of the AED initiative. I presently have 16 people on the list stating that they want to purchase AEDs; 15 AEDs being the magic number to get the discount previously discussed. Questions re: insurance and liability have arisen that need to be addressed if we undergo writing a formal AED and First Aid program for our club. GHYC is a structured institution and an AED program would be held to a different standard than the individuals buying the AEDs through this initiative. More investigation is required before I recommend we proceed. My last point of business is the F Dock party scheduled for Saturday May 4. I have made no preparations or planning for this as of yet but I will get it done when I return. Page 5

Approximately 40 members met and car-pooled from the Gulf Harbour Marina Parking lot. All were impressed with the facility and their knowledgeable and attentive personnel. Employees Ryan Levi (Chief Operating Officer), Taz Papanikolaou (General Manager and Bob Dowell (Technical Service Manager) escorted groups through the state of the art boat facility showing their ability to service and maintain boats weighing to 360,000 pounds and approx tall. The also have a full service Ships Store with all the boaters needs. Vice Commodore s Report by Terry Lappin We have a good cruise planned to depart Friday, April 19 th. This cruise will go to Punta Gorda s Laishley Municipal for two nights, then to Boca Grande Marina for three prior to returning to Gulf Harbour. We have a good fleet of ten boats for Punta Gorda and nine for Boca Grande. We won t be going hungry with dinners planned at the Laishley Crab House, the Eagle Grill, and Gasparilla Inn. 7 Matanzas Inn Lunch Bunch by Niles and Jean Kin On Wednesday, April 10 th, the Gulf Harbour Yacht Club experienced a great boating day with sunny weather and reasonable seas. Forty members and guests enjoyed a fine lunch at the Mantazas Inn. Nearly all arrived by water on a broad variety of boats ranging from a 19 foot Boston Whaler to a 44 foot Sea-Ray and sizes in-between. One of the arriving 8 boats was a 31 foot Catalina sailboat; the first time we believe, a sailboat participated in a GHYC Lunch Bunch! Page 7
