The storyteller uses different voices and may also sing songs. a popular pastime is riddles. if you have a riddle say "Tim-tim," and those who want to hear it reply "Bwa sèch." If they give up, they say "Bwa sèch. my name is twilight and I am a girl scout superhero! my superpower is that I AM always responsible for what I say and do. I chose Haiti for world thinking day BECAUSE I love their storytelling. When I sit, I am taller than w hen I s tand. 3 Girl Guides in haiti girl guides wear a neckerchief with colors chosen by their unit. what colors would your troop choose for their neckerchief? haiti is a member of The World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts. I am wearing a girl guide uniform from haiti. Pretend you live in haiti. 6 I am wearing a traditional costume from haiti called A Karabela dress. they are usually two piece outfits with a ruffle over the shoulders and a tiered ruffled skirt. traditional clothing the karabela dress is still worn in haiti. More elaborate and colorful versions are used for parades and dances. headwraps are often worn for comfort and style. DRESS YOUR PAPER DOLL IN THESE CLOTHES. 6
7 Cut a piece of letter-sized card stock in half the long way. Carnival Carnival is Haiti's biggest celebration. Celebrations usually begin at the end of January and end with "Fat Tuesday," or Mardi Gras. Carnival is marked by colorful parades where locals wear outrageous costumes and parade the streets. There is lively music, traditional art and dances. The largest Carnival in Haiti is celebrated in Port-auPrince, with many more smaller scale festivities occurring in all parts of the island. Port-au-Prince s annual carnival is one of the largest Mardi Gras carnivals in the Caribbean and North America. Celebrations The Haitian people never miss a chance to celebrate. Their AfroCaribbean culture of song and dance create colorful festivals for every occasion. new year s day, ancestor s day, and their storytelling festival, called krik? krak! are just a few. Staple pieces together to fit around your head. gather supplies from your craft box such as flowers, feathers, and ribbon decorate any way you want. idea wear your hat & have a parade. 7
8 The Flag The blue represents the former African slaves. The red stands for people of mixed ancestry. The coat of arms depicts a trophy and weapons ready to defend freedom and a royal palm for independence. the banner underneath reads: In Union there is Strength. booth idea Color and cut out your flag. fold it in half over a string with the rest of the girls flags. 8
9 make a family flag! what is special to you and your family? idea if you had a flag what would it look like? is there a graphic on it? what does it mean? what do the colors mean? think about stories you have been told about your grandparents or others in your extended families. Voodoo Many people have learned about Voodoo through movies and TV shows but it doesn t accurately portray what it is. Voodoo is a religion. Many Haitians practice both Christianity and Voodoo. When Haiti beat the French in a war and became its own country, the people of Haiti believed that Voodoo had helped them win. Some people enjoy partaking in Voodoo practices for fun, such as buying love potions, and casting spells that promise luck, money, health or success. While some only do it for the fun of it, many take it seriously. culture a creole is a person of mixed European and African descent, especially in the Caribbean. haitian creole is a language that has mixed roots. france ruled the haitian people who were mostly of african descent resulting in a mixed mini Drum Swap Wrap a recycled lid with string, wrapping a safety pin into it about half way. secure with dabs of hot glue as you wrap. cut a circle out of a paper bag. Glue over top, bending the edges down. 9

Haitian Solenodon Living in Haiti are 42 threatened mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians which need conservation efforts. There are 38 species considered endangered. About half of these live only in Haiti. The Haitian Solendon is a threatened rodent. As with many of the threatened species, the Haitian Solendon makes its home in the forest. The Haitian people have used the forest s resources for survival. It is a complicated balance to provide for the people and for the animals. cut a tongue out of red felt. hot glue the opening closed with the tongue sticking out. haiti s birds Haiti has many beautiful birds from tiny hummingbirds to beautiful flamingos. the national bird is the Hispaniolan trogon. it has a bright red chest and an unique patterned tail. glue on a bow and wiggle eyes. 11

13 the land the island of Hispaniola is in the a Caribbean sea. the west side is Haiti & the the east side is the Dominican Republic. Haiti is a very poor country. many children do not go to school and they never learn to read or write. most families live below the poverty level. Haiti the citadel ferrière is a 200 year old fort built on a mountain top to protect the country. The residents of this neighborhood in port-au-prince decided to paint their houses different colors so this part of the city would look better. labadee is a port that has been leased for cruise ship access. tourist can go to the beach, go shopping and have a bite to eat during their one-day stay. 14 Haitian food hearty Stews are common in Haiti. it is Served over cornmeal or rice. beans and rice are popular side dishes. did? you know Haitians will eat spaghetti and hot dogs for breakfast. They also blend spaghetti and tomato sauce to drink as a dinner! Make sure ingredients are clearly displayed before serving food at your thinking day event. Haitian Boulette Makes about 60 1 Meatballs 8 slices of white bread 4 minced garlic cloves 1 cup all-purpose flour 2 Tbl of tomato paste 1 cup grated Parmesan Salt, black and red cheese pepper 1 cup milk Olive oil for frying 8 slices of smoked bacon Cut crusts off white bread. Cut bread into small cubes. Mix all the ingredients except oil in a large mixing bowl. Form meat mixture into 1 balls. Preheat 2 tablespoons of oil in a large skillet. Fry meatballs turning often until all sides are brown and inside is cooked through (about minutes.) basket of fruit swaps trace around a larger size vending capsule lid on a piece of burlap. cut out. squeeze a layer of tacky glue into the lid. push the burlap into the lid and cover with a layer of glue. dry with a hair dryer, slide out. glue runts in the bowl. add a pin and swap. 14
