Introduction 2013 marks some positive changes for Bass Lake Festival. This year we re offering a meal plan for participants to purchase for $50 per person which covers all meals for the event (Friday dinner through Monday breakfast). We also opened up our event to individual registrations, assigning camp staff to host cabins of participants by gender. This year s theme is In the Light and is a back to basics approach about God s first actions in Genesis. God creates light, we live in the light, and through us Christ shines his light on the world! We also continue to refine our smaller community project Ummah, giving participants time and space to interact with others assigned to their UMMAH group. Our planning team has been working all year to offer an exciting and uplifting experience. The information in this packet is designed to help adult leaders find important information about the weekend, the camp rules and the people you can contact for assistance. Sincerely, The Bass Lake Team Michi-Lu-Ca Conference Center and Camp 3

Service Project Service projects are available during recreation time led by our fearless Michi-Lu-Ca Maintenance Director, Brian Rastall. Join Brian and provide a service to Michi-Lu-Ca and the wonderful ministry that happens here! Meet at the big tent at 3:30 during recreation time! Musicians, Miters, and Mustard Enjoy the delightful flavor of hot dogs masterfully cooked on the grill by the ELCA Bishops from the lower peninsula of Michigan! These blessed hot dogs will be available for purchase on Saturday during lunch-time outside Red Pine Lodge. 4 Michi-Lu-Ca Conference Center and Camp

Mission & History Mission: Bass Lake is a Christian Music Festival for High School aged youth which provides an outside the box grace-filled experience of the Christian faith. Through great music, unique learning opportunities, and a relaxed, communitybuilding atmosphere, this event shares the Gospel with youth from all backgrounds and levels of maturity in a beautiful outdoor setting. At Bass Lake the Word is the people, the music, the stars, the campfire. History: In the late 1960 s something happened on Yasgur s farm in upstate New York that got the world s attention. That thing was called Woodstock, a festival of music and community living that (in spite of a lot of problems) seemed to reach young people in a new and powerful way. As hard as it might be to believe, there were some Michigan Lutherans who were actually paying attention to what happened at Woodstock. Some of the folks who were involved in the Michigan District Camps thought, Hey, why couldn t we hold a music festival (minus the sex and drugs) and have our Christian faith be at the core? Why couldn t we use this new way of being together to reach kids that might otherwise never attend a church event? Since no one could think of a good reason why they shouldn t, they did. Thanks to the hard work of a handful of staff from the Michigan District Camps, the Bass Lake Festival was born. From the early 1970 s to the late 1980 s the festival was held at Bass Lake, which was on the grounds of Pleasant Hill Lutheran Camp near Greenville, Michigan. Over the years, thousands of kids and some brave adults camped under the stars, enjoyed terrific music, workshops, and outdoor fun in a way that boosted their faith and brought them closer to God and to each other. When it became necessary to sell Pleasant Hill Lutheran Camp in the early 1990 s, the festival ran into a rather obvious problem; What do we do with the Bass Lake Festival now that we no longer have access to Bass Lake? The answer was as obvious as the question: the festival was way too cool and important for too many people to just let die. The hardy staff of the newly formed LORMM decided to move the festival to Michi-Lu-Ca, (after one year at Tecumseh Woods), keeping the name Bass Lake in honor of the many memories and years of tradition surrounding the event. It s not at Bass Lake anymore, but it s just as cool, fun, uplifting, outrageous, inspiring, and outdoors as it has ever been. In fact, some say it gets better every year! 8 Arrival Quick and easy steps to ensure a smooth check-in: I. Prior to arrival - make sure each person age 18 or older in attendance has submitted the LWM7/Staff/Adult Screening form to Living Water Ministries by July 15. Make sure you have the following forms with you on arrival: A. LWM1 - Liability and Communications Release Waiver C. LWM2 - Health and medical release forms, completed and signed by parents/guardians. Copies of each minor student s insurance cards D. LWM4 - Covenant signed by all participants Forms are available at: II. Upon arrival - Check-in between 3:00 and 6:00 PM. Please bring your group to the big tent for Welcome Under the Tent. One leader and one youth (with all forms) will then be directed to the Pavilion for Check-in, maps, site assignments, wristbands, and t-shirts. At the pavilion you will receive your health forms back once they have been checked. Campers may wish to sign up for Skill Shops that have limited space. Check out the the sign up list, located on the back side of Bass Lake Central near the big tent. III. Late arrival - If you arrive after 6:00 PM please proceed directly to the big tent for the opening programming. We will hold a late check-in at Bass Lake Central between 9:00 9:45 PM. 6 Michi-Lu-Ca Conference Center and Camp

Michi-Lu-Ca & Bass Lake Rules and Policies Covenant and Waiver: All campers are required to complete these forms and present them at check-in for attendance at Bass Lake. Health Release: We will ask to see health release or right to treat forms for every member of your group. We recommend that all groups use our health release waivers. However, since the safety, health, and treatment of all campers is the responsibility of the attending group, you may use your own health waivers if desired. Also, when visiting our camp nurse, you will need to present your right to treat forms before consultation. Curfew: All campers must be at their campsites or cabins by 12:00 AM Friday night and 12:15 AM on Saturday and Sunday nights for Congregational Devotional Times. This time should be used to quiet campers down, reflect on the day, or do devotions. At 1:00 AM a Camp Staff member will visit all community fire rings to safely extinguish all fires. Quiet Time: Quiet time is required camp wide by 12:00 AM - 7:00 AM each night. Mandatory Events: Campers attendance of Mass Gathering, Walkin the Talks and Skillshops is mandatory. These events are vital to the Bass Lake experience and building of our community. Fellowship/Visiting Other Sites: Fellowship and visiting other sites is encouraged as long as adult leaders of both groups are informed and approve. Buddy System: For the safety of all campers, Michi-Lu-Ca has a required Buddy System policy. All campers should be with a buddy at all times. Pet Policy: Because of the noise, allergies, and extra cleanup requirements of pets, Michi-Lu-Ca has a strict NO PETS policy. Please help us respect this policy by leaving your pets at home. Cell Phones: All brands of cell and mobile phones are unreliable on Michi-Lu-Ca property. Please turn off cell phones during all mandatory events. Michi-Lu-Ca Conference Center and Camp 7

Smoking: Smoking is allowed by the designated community fire circles and should be as discreet as possible. No one under the age of 18 is allowed to smoke anywhere on Michi-Lu-Ca property. Smoking is not allowed in any Michi-Lu-Ca building. Bathrooms: Due to the heavy volume of use at the Bass Lake Festival, we require intervals of 10 minutes or less per person in our showers. Additionally, our electrical systems are not designed for hairdryers or other heated appliances, so please refrain from bringing them. Canteen: Michi-Lu-Ca has a small canteen located near the Bass Lake Tent. The canteen will sell various snack items and Michi-Lu-Ca memorabilia. Also we will sell bags of ice throughout the festival, while supplies last. The camp store located by waterfront will be open during waterfront times, picnic performances, and the drive-in movie showing. First Aid: There will be a Health Officer staying in the Nurse s Cabin, on the top of Swim Hill. He or she will be at the Tent during all Mass Gatherings. Campers will need to bring their right to treat forms for consultation. Radios: To maintain the quiet surroundings of God s creation, we ask that volumes on personal sound systems be kept very low. Fires and Fire Rings: Fires are only allowed in the designated fire circles. There is one located in each unit area. No ground fires are allowed at campsites, cabins, or hogans. A Michi-Lu-Ca staff member will visit all Community Fire Circles at 1:00 AM each night to ensure that they have been safety extinguished. No fires are allowed beyond 1:00 AM. In the case of extreme dry weather and for the safety of the campers and camp, it may be necessary to limit fires to only cooking fires during designated meal times. Vehicles: Each site will be given one vehicle pass to allow for storage at the site or for departure from the camp during non-mandatory events. Vehicles are not to be used for transportation around the camp, or to and from events. Special passes can be obtained for those who have special transportation needs. All vehicles without a pass should be parked outside the camp by the main gate. Waterfront: All waterfront activities must be limited to the specified recreation times that our lifeguard staff will be on duty. Check your schedule for those times. 8 Michi-Lu-Ca Conference Center and Camp

Event Descriptions Mass Gatherings*: A time for all guests to gather at the Big Tent for worship, celebration, meeting others, singing, and exploring our faith. This year, they will be led by guest artist/speakers Rev. Jen Rude, Emily Hearn, The Great Romance, and Nate Schleicher & Friends. Walkin the Talk*: A time to reflect, discuss and share about the theme of the Bass Lake Festival. A wide variety of topics will be covered, and campers will be allowed to choose which Walking the Talk to attend. Skill Shops*: This time frame will have numerous options for all to choose from including information-based, faith development, service projects, skills, and crafts. Service Projects: Many attending groups choose to use the Skill Shop time to participate in a service project for the health and maintenance of Michi-Lu-Ca. Meet at the big tent to work with Michi-Lu-Ca s Maintenance Director, Brian Rastall in a service project on camp. Recreational Options: Swimming, Canoeing, Volleyball, Basketball, Frisbee Golf, and Hiking will be offered as options for the afternoons. In the evening, we will offer Games, Themed Dances, Concerts, Karaoke, Campfires, etc. Feed the Bands: When checking in at Bass Lake, you can sign up to invite a band or speaker to enjoy a meal with you. These are great opportunities to get to know our entertainment leaders on a more personal level. Congregational Devotion Times: 11:15 pm on Friday night and 11:30 PM on Saturday and Sunday nights are designated as Congregational Devotion Time. These times allow for your group s reflection on the day and the lessons contained within it. Feed the Staff: Campers and adults have a chance to get to know staff and ask questions, if they had any. For staff it gives them a chance to get to know other churches. When planning for meals please plan for 2 extra. If you can not do this let us know. We realize that some groups are too small to add. *Required events Michi-Lu-Ca Conference Center and Camp 9
