2 3 Clothing and what to bring with you Warm and waterproof clothing and suitable footwear is recommended on all events. Please wear walking boots on all walks. Please bring plenty to drink and on longer events you may need a packed lunch. If refreshments are available at the event location this will be stated in the programme or when you make your booking. Cycle Rides All cycles must be roadworthy and in a good working condition. If in doubt please get your bike professionally serviced prior to the ride. All participants must wear a correctly fitting cycle safety helmet. On family rides it is recommended that each adult is responsible for no more than 2 children. Please ride your bike in accordance to the guidelines of the Highway Code. Horse Rides Horse and rider must have the fitness and competence to take part in the event and 3rd party liability insurance. All participants must agree to wear the hi-viz waistcoat provided, appropriate footwear and a hard hat of PAS015, BSEN1384 or ATSM/SEI standard. A cycle ride A horse ride Family event Booking For health and safety reasons some events have a maximum number of participants. Booking is essential for these events. Please book early as places are limited. Details of how to book can be found with each individual event. Some events do not require pre-booking. Cancellations and refunds No refund will be given unless the event is cancelled by the organisers or there are exceptional circumstances. Arriving at your event You are advised to arrive at the event at least 10 minutes before the start time. There will be an event leader there to meet you whatever the weather. In unsafe conditions a safety assessment will be made and a decision may be taken to cancel the event if necessary. What you need to know All young people under 16 attending the events listed must be accompanied by an adult. Photographs Please note we may take photographs at our events. Photos might be used in future publicity. If you have any objections please advise the leader at the start of the event. 3 Heritage Open Days EAST YORKSHIRE OPEN STUDIOS 2013 The Wolds Walking Festival coincides with this year s Heritage Open Days 12th- 15th September, Look at the incredible variety of grasses, look at the marvellous leaves; look at the colour. Isn t it beautiful... pure joy. 14th-15th and 21st-22nd September Artists throughout East Yorkshire invite all of those with an interest in the visual arts to visit then in their studios and participating galleries. Inspiration is never far away in this region with its stunning coast, serene wolds countryside and architectural heritage. It provides the artists living and working here with a unique perspective that influences their work. We are both pleased and proud to share this work with you through this very special event. Healthy living and recreation are seen as essential parts of improving the quality of life and walking and the enjoyment of the outdoors are a simple means of attaining these objectives. 4 5 Walking for Health The Yorkshire Wolds; a softer crescent of hills, secret deep valleys and astonishingly pretty villages each with a gem of a church, an inviting pub and a duck pond mantled by willow trees. Walkers are Welcome Walkers are Welcome is a national initiative which started in 2007 and now has over 100 member towns who all promote walking activity and a warm welcome to walkers. There are 3 towns in the Yorkshire Wolds namely Market Weighton, Beverley and Pocklington that are already active and established Walkers are Welcome Towns. Thanks to all of them for arranging walks and events as part of this festival. is a programme of events within the festival which celebrates and encourages town walking in the beautiful historic town of Beverley. Nearby Snaith has recently achieved WAW status and as a launch event is holding its own Walking Festival 14 to 20 September. Further details can be found at visithullandeast yorkshire.com Walking for Heath is a national initiative aimed at encouraging the community to become more physically active through walking. East Riding of Yorkshire Council s Walking for Health Scheme currently has 19 different walk venues, with over 50 guided walks every month. Walks can range from 30 minutes for those who are just getting back into walking or two hours for those who want a bit more of a challenge. No need to book on any of the walks, just turn up 15 minutes before the start wearing comfy shoes, warm clothing and a drink of water. Walking can make you feel good, give you more energy, reduce stress and improve sleep. It also keeps your heart strong and reduces blood pressure as well as helping you to manage your weight. 5 Saturday 14 September Mortimer Heritage Walk, Driffield A circular walk around Driffield Town Centre focussing on the life and work of J.R. Mortimer, a pioneering nineteenth century archaeologist and local businessman. This walk is guided by Dr. Stephen Harrison and will visit places of significance to the life of Mortimer. At the mid-way point there will be a stop off at Riverhead where participants can partake of refreshments (including cream teas) at Riverhead Café (optional and additional cost). TA Saturday 14 September Art in the landscape along the Yorkshire Wolds Way A 5 mile linear walk along the Yorkshire Wolds Way from East Heslerton to Wintringham with Malcolm Hodgson, National Trails Officer and Peter Turton of the Churches Conservation Trust. A chance to see and learn about two of the great artworks developed as part of the WANDER Project and two fascinating churches along the way. The walk includes one steep climb and one steep drop. Explore the courtroom, the medieval great hall and explore the current exhibitions. Located in the centre of Beverley near the main post office and County Hall. Saturday 14 September Snickets and Rackets 1 Exploring some of the historic passageways that chart the medieval history of Beverley. This year s theme is Desert Island Documents. On display will be the treasures of the collections, beautiful, artistic, historically significant, funny, fascinating and downright odd! Behind the scenes tours, conservation demonstrations and children s activities. Located close to the town centre adjacent to the County Hall complex. Saturday 14 September The Three Peaks Walk Beverley Style! A surprise walk hitting the heights of town and taking in the sights. A good head for heights is needed and a sense of adventure. Climbing a tower is part of the walk and will require good mobility. This part of the walk is optional but a great opportunity to see one of the best views in the East Riding. Contact Beverley Tourist Information Centre tel Saturday 14 September Southburn Archaeological Museum Open Day am 4.00pm Take a tour of the fantastic collections of the Southburn Archaeological Museum with displays of local artefacts from the Neolithic to modern times including a full size replica of the Wetwang chariot on loan from the British Museum. Hands on activities for children and adults. Located at the JSR Farming Centre 3 miles southeast of Driffield. From the A614 and A164 follow the signs for JSR Farms. Saturday 14 September The Darker side of Beverley 1 Beverley is a beautiful town, but over the centuries there have been some dark deeds. Prisoners were put on treadmills, highwaymen were arrested and duels were fought. People were ducked in filthy water, pigs roamed the streets and there were privies not flush toilets. War visited the town during the War of the Roses, the Civil War and two World wars. Some early forms of entertainment involved bulls and chickens. It all happened in Beverley. Contact Beverley Tourist Information Centre tel Saturday 14 and Madhyamaka KMC Buddhist Centre Open Weekend Kilnwick Percy Hall, Pocklington YO42 1LF The hall was once a stately home and is now a thriving Buddhist community. Your chance to experience a guided meditation session or try one or more of the guided tours. The World Peace Café is open all day and tea and coffee will also be on sale in the Georgian sitting room or visitors may bring their own refreshments. 6 Saturday 14 September Hunmanby Heritage Day am 1.00pm Considered the gateway to the Wolds the village of Hunmanby has a long and varied history, which can be explored as part of the annual Hunmanby Heritage Day. Events include exhibitions, guided church and village tours and the launch of the new village heritage trail. All activities begin at the centre of the village. Saturday 14 and J.R. Mortimer Exhibition, St Marys Church, Fimber Visit St Mary Fimber s new exhibition of the life of pioneering Wolds archaeologist J.R. Mortimer. Designed by G.E. Street in a 13th century style with fine stained glass, a perfect start for exploring the high Wolds and its rich heritage. Fimber is on the B1251 between Fridaythorpe and Sledmere. Saturday 14 & Sunday 15 September Skidby Windmill am 5.00pm Free entry to the last working English windmill north of the Humber and visit the Museum of Rural Life illustrating the agricultural and rural history of the East Riding. Meet the miller, visit the Sails Café and explore the beautiful network of footpaths. Located on the A164, 4 miles south of Beverley. Saturday 14 through to Saturday 21 September daily Driffield Heritage Trail Tour of Driffield town tracing its evolution through its buildings past and present. Children welcome. Join Cllr David K Elvidge, former Beverley Mayor and his Siberian Husky, Paige, on this 5 mile walk following the old bounds around Beverley s most famous and ancient common land, Beverley Westwood. TA Circular Walk to Cottam from Sir Tatton Sykes Monument Splendid views are to be experienced on this walk which visits the sites of the deserted villages of Cottam and Cowlam which are the highest points on the Wolds. The walk passes over high ground, along deep dales and across arable farmland. The route takes you by the interesting church at Cowlam and the ruins of the church at Cottam. Children welcome. SE Booking essential: e mail Skidby Windmill Milling with Mullender This is a charming 6 mile town and country walk which will take in part of the Beaver Trail and Beverley 20 going via Spark Mill and Black Mill. Rediscover some more local history off the beaten track in Beverley. Bring a drink and sandwich with you for a lunch stop. TA A simple Wolds Farmhouse Guided tours of the recently restored 17th century farmhouse at Glebe Farm, Octon, one of the oldest houses in the Yorkshire Wolds. Walk the commons of Beverley with your leader Mike Jackson. A 9 mile walk covering open land taking in the three lovely commons within Beverley town. Where are they and what are they for? Beverley Westwood Join the East Riding Archaeological Society on Beverley Westwood for some hands on geophysical survey, pottery display and short guided works. 7 Rudston Project Open Afternoon, All Saints Church - 1pm 4pm Find the dinosaur footprints preserved in the largest prehistoric standing stone in the UK, pay homage to the Wolds author Winifed Holtby and take a tour of the church and village of Rudston as part of the ongoing Rudston Heritage Project. The easy 12 ½ mile ride is led by fully qualified British cycling ride leaders who are on hand to provide advice and encouragement. All ages are welcome but children age 5 and under must be in a BSA approved child seat, trailer or tag along. SE Launch of the Pilgrimage of Grace Heritage Walking Trail The trail is 8½ miles long through outstanding landscapes between Warter and Pocklington. It celebrates the important role that this part of Yorkshire played in the Pilgrimage of Grace, a rebellion against Henry VIII in Yorkshire in Assemble in Pocklington for a charabanc ride to the Wolds Heritage Centre at Warter for the launch ceremony, refreshments and the start for the walk. Non-walkers return to Pocklington via the charabanc with a possible stop in Nunburnholme village, the location for the Nuns Walk. Join society guides who will describe events leading up to the battle, the subsequent consequences of it and some of the myths and legends. To book contact Beverley Tourist Information Centre, Butcher Row tel: Circular Walk from Boynton via Rudston Much of this walk utilised minor public roads including one following the alignment of a Roman Road, but it also passes along paths across fields and through woods. The walk passes through the village of Rudston famous for having the tallest stone monolith in the country. The walk offers views of Holderness, the coastline and the North Sea, as well as buildings such as Burton Agnes Hall, Thorpe Hall and Boynton Hall. Children welcome. E mail Tuesday 17 September Circular Walk from Bainton via North Dalton A slightly hilly walk through pleasant Wolds countryside that follows sections of the Minster Way and the ancient Haywold Track. The walk utilises tracks and public roads passing through woodland and along dales. Good views are to be had of the Wolds and the surrounding countryside. Children welcome. Using a simple map and a time limit of 45 minutes you need to get as many correct answers as possible! Everyone starts and finishes at the same time and place, so it is a great way to socialise and make new friends. There is also the opportunity to join forces with your friends and create teams. RunChallenge is aimed at over 14 s, younger children are welcome but would need to be part of a team. Although this event is taking place a week after the festival, Ed and Nicola Duggleby of Brickyard Farm, Beswick are kindly hosting this pleasure horse ride, which explores the little-known farmland between Beverley and Driffield. The carrs are lands which used to flood and were used as seasonal pastures: now they ve been drained, and the area is criss-crossed with dykes and other waterways. Mid-way round the circuit is the wildlife haven of wetlands, ponds and marshes at Tophill Low Nature Reserve, bordered by a long bridleway. Much of the route is over private land which is not normally accessible, including a couple of optional jumps, and there will be two route options of around 8 and 11 miles. The entry fee includes a BBQ lunch from the Duggleby s homereared Belted Galloway beef and rare-breed lamb.
