2 3 Booking Information About the events Gentle walk suitable for most levels of fitness. Short countryside walks mainly on flat paths. Moderate walk suitable for average fitness. Countryside walks with a few gradients and sometimes steps. Boots recommended. Strenuous walk suitable for those with a good level of fitness. Countryside walks with steep gradients, steps or rough terrain. Boots essential. A cycle ride A horse ride Booking For health and safety reasons some events have a maximum number of participants. Booking is essential for these events. Please book early as places are limited. Details of how to book can be found with each individual event. Some events do not require pre-booking. Cancellations and refunds No refunds will be given unless the event is cancelled by the organisers or there are exceptional circumstances Arriving at your event You are advised to arrive at the event at least 10 minutes before the start time. There will be an event leader there to meet you whatever the weather. In unsafe conditions a safety assessment will be made and a decision may be taken to cancel the event if necessary. What you need to know All young people under 16 attending the events listed must be accompanied by an adult. Photographs Please note we may take photographs at our events. Photos might be used in future publicity. If you have any objections please advise the leader at the start of the event. Clothing and what to bring with you Warm and waterproof clothing and suitable footwear is recommended on all events. Please wear walking boots on all walks. Please bring plenty to drink and on longer events you may need a packed lunch. If refreshments are available at the event location this will be stated in the programme or when you make your booking. Dogs Where dogs are allowed this will be stipulated otherwise we ask that dogs are left at home. Cycle Rides All cycles must be roadworthy and in a good working condition. If in doubt please get your bike professionally serviced prior to the ride. All participants must wear a correctly fitting cycle safety helmet. On family rides it is recommended that each adult is responsible for no more than 2 children. Please ride your bike in accordance to the guidelines of the Highway Code. Horse Rides Horse and rider must have the fitness and competence to take part in the event and 3rd party liability insurance. All participants must agree to wear the hi-viz waistcoat provided, appropriate footwear and a hard hat of PAS015, BSEN 1384 or ATSM/SEI standard. 3 5 Walking the Way to Health Walking for Heath is a national initiative aimed at encouraging the community to become more physically active through walking. East Riding of Yorkshire Council s Walking for Health Scheme currently has 19 different walk venues, with over 50 guided walks every month. Walks can range from 30 minutes for those who are just getting back into walking or two hours for those who want a bit more of a challenge. No need to book on any of the walks, just turn up 15 minutes before the start wearing comfy shoes, warm clothing and a drink of water. Walking can make you feel good, give you more energy, reduce stress and improve sleep. It also keeps your heart strong and reduces blood pressure as well as helping you to manage your weight. For more information or to request a programme contact Laura Telfer, healthy lifestyles development officer on ( ) or laura.telfer@ eastriding.gov.uk Wander Art on the Yorkshire Wolds Way Artworks that complement and enhance the landscape have been installed along the 79-mile National Trail - by nationally significant artists as part of the WANDER project. The works of art will vary in type and scale and be installed in a variety of beautiful and unusual settings. Local communities have been heavily consulted to develop works of art that best benefit their areas, some of the pieces will even double up as beneficial infrastructure including a bridge and a bus shelter! The East Riding of Yorkshire Countryside Access Team The countryside access team are responsible for ensuring that countryside walks are well maintained and open for you to use and enjoy. The public rights of way network is a wonderful asset giving access to the best viewpoints, the best landscapes and the best wildlife in the East Riding. Search out these routes on Disused railway lines in the area are now linear wildlife corridors where you can walk, cycle and horse ride in peace and safety and these are also managed by the team. 4 7 Is a weekend of guided and self-led walks around the town celebrating Beverley becoming a Walkers are Welcome town. Walkers are Welcome is a national initiative which started in 2007 and now has over 100 member towns who promote walking activity and a warm welcome to walkers. For further information visit org.uk. WALKABOUTBEVERLEY is the official launch event for the Beverley Walkers are Welcome group and we are delighted to include it as part of the larger Walking and Outdoors Festival Programme. Other towns in the Wolds, namely Market Weighton and Pocklington, are already active and established Walkers are Welcome towns and they too have arranged walks as part of this Festival. Friday 14 September The Ghost Walk of Beverley A twilight ghost walk (approx. 2 miles) with local accredited tour guide Paul Schofield. Discover chilling tales and gruesome stories drawn from the town s history. Start time: 19:00 (to finish at about 21:00 in Highgate) Meet: Outside the Royal Standard public house, North Bar Within. Cost: 3.00 per person. Booking essential. Tickets from Beverley Tourist Information Centre, Butcher Row, Beverley Tel Beverley Beck and Beyond Join Mike Jackson of the Beverley Ramblers on this 4 mile walk which follows the beck to its junction with the River Hull, crossing the ancient common of Figham along tracks passing England Springs and a Yorkshire Wildlife reserve. Returning to the Beck via the Minster and some more of the snickets of Beverley. Start time: 13:45 Meet: At Creelers statue near the Foresters Arms, at the end of Beverley Beck, Flemingate. The Three Peaks Walk - Beverley Style A surprising 3 mile walk hitting the heights of town and taking in the sights. A good head for heights is needed and a sense of adventure. Climbing a tower is part of the walk and will require good mobility. This part of the walk is optional but a great opportunity to see one of the best views in the area. Meet: Beverley Tourist Information Centre. Cost: Free of charge but you may wish to make a donation. The tower is opening specially for this event. Snickets and Rackets! Join Barbara English, local historian and writer on this 2 mile walk exploring some of the historic passageways that chart the medieval history of Beverley. Come and explore! TA Around the Houses and Churches Join your guide Carli Black, for a chance to chat and walk on a new and different 2 mile circuit of town, taking in the iconic religious buildings on a relaxed and easy walk. Contact for 5 Delve into Deep Dale Photography Walk Spend the afternoon exploring the stunning hidden dry chalk dales below Bishop Wilton Wold (walk is approximately 4 miles) with landscape photographer Paul Moon.All photographic abilities are welcome as are all types of cameras from mobile phones to top-of-the-range DSLRs. The terrain is often steep but there will be optional gentle slopes for the less agile. Strong footwear is necessary however. Children will love the chance to play detective and hunt for hidden clues whilst parents will enjoy the peace and tranquillity with the opportunity to get a taste of the Way National Trail. Please bring a packed lunch and refreshments with you. 6 11 Monday 17 September Fangfoss Funride 9 10 Londesborough sat nav Treasure Hunt An introduction to Navigation 15 Birds of North Cave Wetlands 16 The funride starts from Fangfoss and Ride Yorkshire have negotiated permissive access to private land for several parts of the routes making this a very special opportunity. Choose from 2 routes: 6 miles or 10 miles (approx). The price includes a BBQ meal provided by the Fangfoss Jubilee Park Committee. These events are always very popular so early booking is recommended. Participants will receive confirmation, joining details a map and directions on the day. Join us for a 6 mile, 3 to 4 hour walk around Risby Park Woods to discover the area that Ernie Teal called his home. Ernie Teal the Sheriff of Walkington was the village s most famous son and was the oracle on local nature and wildlife. This is your chance to find out about the history of the house and the Buddhist faith which can promote a harmonious life and counter the stresses and strains of modern living. This will be followed by a guided meditation suitable for all (optional). There will then be free time to explore the many woodland trails and walled garden in the beautiful grounds.
