Senior. CHAPTER DIRECTOR S Corner John-Carl & Diane Zarella Well, we had a great August and start to September. Again, I want to start out asking for your prayers and thoughts directed to Bob Holmes - his Leukemia is not getting better and he is starting a new round of therapy. All your support and well wishes are appreciated as he fights this disease. Since our last Gathering, we held a couple rides - The USS Edson in Bay City, and The Ausable River Queen in Oscoda, Wing Ding, and we ended up last weekend with our Annual Progressive Dinner Ride. The USS Edson in Bay City was a great trip visiting a bit of American Military History. We were hosted by our own Bam Bam who sailed on an almost identical sister ship. The ship has most all of its parts still intact and also had many other displays from other ships of the era. Wally led a nice ride up there but had to cut out early. The rest of the group had dinner at a 50 s style diner then enjoyed the ride home. The following week we went to Oscoda to the Ausable River Queen. This was an old paddle boat that cruises the river for small groups to enjoy. It was a nice hour and half ride on the Ausable River where the weather turned out to be fantastic. Since our boat ride was at 3:00pm, we stopped for lunch at the Turkey Roost just north of Bay City. After lunch, we rode to Oscoda Twp. and on to the River Queen. And last weekend was our Progressive Dinner Ride - as you know, this is one of my favorite activities with the Chapter. This one was again a great time with 32 members of Chapter E and their friends. I want to start out by recognizing and thanking our hosts - Ron & Karen Allcorn, Geno & Sam Bury, Dennis & Gayle Jisa and Art & Marla Scafe. Starting out at Ron & Karen s were the appetizers and salads - and the apple tossed salad was a big hit. Diane wasn t the only one asking for the recipe of the dressing and salad. After an hour s drive we ended up at Geno & Sam s for potatoes and vegies. Sam did a great job making the potatoes and vegies up as finger foods or hors d oeuvres. Mmmm, tasty! Again an hour ride to let the food begin digesting as we made our way to Dennis & Gayle s for the main dish. With a selection of fried chicken, beef roast, sauerkraut and bratwurst, and even no meat meatballs, no one was going away feeling hungry. Lucky it is only a short ride over to Art & Marla s for desserts and the bonfire as the night ended with some great friends and a beautiful day to hold the event. Now for Wing Ding - I am sure the GWRRA Home Team will be putting out info on the event, but let me recap a bit of things. Knoxville was a great town to hold the event, just off the campus of University of Tennessee - what a big school. Diane & I stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn, about a mile from the main Knoxville Convention Center. We walked back and forth every chance we got and even spent time wondering thru the university campus. Everyone was so friendly and always greeted us with a big Hello. The area is great for riding but we made last minute arrangements and took our car. Nonetheless, we had a great time. Chapter Mi-E was well represented as we had at least 12 members present. As is the case with Wing Ding s in general, we attended some of the new seminars with the new format. More will be coming in the future if you visit any District events over the coming year. There were just over 8000 people that attended Wing Ding 40 in Knoxville - slightly more than prior years.

One seminar was actually a meeting for Chapter Directors, and Diane & I, as well as Dennis & Gayle, attended. The main topic was how to reduce the shrinkage of the GWRRA and hopefully start to reverse this trend and gain in membership numbers. They also indicated that they will probably be bringing back the Chapter position of Ride Educators, by January 1 st of next year. They have also stated the new Officer s Handbook is all but complete and should be ready for distribution (via GWRRA Officer Connection Website) by October 1 st. The goals of GWRRA for 2019 include: Recruiting & Retention Communication GWRRA Image or Perception by the public Writing, communicate, communicate, communicate A big part of having a great chapter is participation - and your Chapter E team does everything we can to provide many opportunities for you to participate in the Chapter - and we really appreciate all you do. Please let us know if there is anything you would like to see in our Chapter activities. New members, especially, need to be welcomed and invited to participate in everything we do. So feel free to reach out and contact our new members. Let me know if there is anything I can do to enhance YOUR experiences. Here are some recent pictures for you to enjoy Until next month! 11 Assistant Chapter Directors Gayle & Dennis Jisa MI DISTRICT COUPLE of The YEAR Wing Ding 2018 is now behind us!! It was held in Knoxville Tennessee and can you believe it s going to be in Nashville Tennessee next year? Dennis and I headed out early on August 25 th to spend two nights at my sister s in southern Ohio. Monday we headed to Knoxville and stayed until Saturday afternoon. We were at the Hilton Garden Inn, who provided a shuttle for us, if we chose or we could walk or ride the trike. We spent lots of time at the vendors and naturally some money as well. There is always something you just cant live without!! We visited with old friends and made new ones, as is always the case. Dennis and I had the privilege of carrying the Michigan flag in at the Opening and were proud to do that We wore our black pants, dress shirt, tie, vest and medallions to carry the flag in and decided we would wear them all day. We had so many people come up and ask us questions that day! I guess we looked like someone who should have the answers. (We did most of the timewink-wink). We attended several seminars, including the Chapter Director s forum, along with John-Carl & Diane. On Saturday, after closing ceremonies, we headed to Kingsport Tennessee to meet up with Mike & Pam, DD s from Louisiana, and their group. We were a group of 8 TRIKES with the 3 yellow ones leading the rides each of the four days we were together! Mike had contacted someone from the local area and asked him to give us some riding ideas. Well, he did more then that, he lead us each day! He knew where the curves were and the good places to eat!! This was a great bunch of new friends who also taught us how to farkle!! Perhaps we will see them again down the road. We left on Thursday the 6 th and spent that night with Dennis s sister in Ohio. We were just about home on Friday when we both heard a noise from the right rear tire. We were on Haggarty so we stopped at Discount Tire. We lucked out as it was 5:50 and they were closing at 6 p.m. They have a great bunch of people working there!! THANK YOU goes out to them!! We had our Progressive Dinner this past Saturday! What a GREAT turn out!! So good to see so many members come out and join in this event. THANK YOU to each of our hosts for opening their homes and for the delicious food! We only have two ice cream rides left this year and we start our cider rides! It has been pretty warm so hard to think of cider but cooler temperatures are coming soon!! Be sure to check our calendar for the events we have planned for all of us! Art & Marla have graciously offered to host our Fall Color Ride in October. Be sure to look for the details on this, as it will be a great time!! I am counting the days!! At the Staff & Ride meeting we talked and decided to just have Rainbow Connection as our charity for the holidays this year. We have a cash donation from the raffle of the clock that Jan & Ron Smith donated at our Fun Run, which will go to them as well. Raffle ticket sales were low this year for the district, so they had to cut the donation that they could make to Rainbow. We will get a list of items to purchase and collect any monies members wish to donate. Look for the list of items soon, as we plan to collect them in October and November so that we can take them to Rainbow for their holiday distribution. As the weather cools be sure to plan for it in your riding. It may be warm when you start out but can get cooler as the evening approaches. The leaves will begin to fall as the temperatures drop and roads become slippery, especially, if it has rained. Get out as much as you can and enjoy the ride!! See you soon.. Gayle

Membership Enhancement Program Art & Marla Scafe 2018 CHAPTER E COUPLE OF THE YEAR: Art & Marla Scafe GWRRA Chapter E MI MESC Article We have been having a great year Chapter E Chapter of the Year. Though the riding season is coming to an end in a few months, Chapter E is still going strong with many events scheduled through the end of the year. Check out our calendar of events to see which events you can attend. Bring along a friend or acquaintance that may be interested in joining our Chapter. We have several Cider Mill rides scheduled to start in September and continuing on weekends to the end of October. We also have a Fall Color Ride to Leelanau Peninsula for October 18 th through the 21 st. Next year, maybe we can go to Pennsylvania again for a great color ride. Even if we are nearing the end of our riding season, these are great times to get together and enjoy those last days of riding. As November and December arrive, it is into the holiday season and probably less opportunities to ride. We will have a pizza party for our November gathering and will be having our Holiday party in December. Don t forget to vote in November and be careful as we enter the Fall Season. 14 Summer has peaked, Thank you again to all those who participated in Rider Courses this year. We are proud that you have chosen to practice your skills so that all of us may be safer on the road. Hopefully everyone is at Wing Ding enjoying all that it has to offer each year, including Rider Courses. Some will be taught by our very own Michigan GWRRA Rider Instructors, so don t miss out on the chance to practice your riding skills! For those of you who need an Add on Rider Course or perhaps a Sidecar Rider Course, they are available here at Wing Ding even though Michigan alone does not have enough interest yet to make it feasible to be held in this state. For anyone interested in becoming a University Instructor, please go to and click on ITCP Training. There you will find the Inquiry Form, the prep, and the videos that must be watched prior to the training program day. Rick and Joy Hebner are the University Coordinators for Michigan and can be reached for more information on the GWRRA Michigan District Team webpage. For anyone interested in becoming a Rider Course Instructor, there is a Rider Course Certification Program (RCICP) in the spring of 2019 scheduled for Roanoke, Virginia hosted by the districts of Virginia and North Carolina. There is a one day all classroom session to develop presentation skills to be held in Highpoint, NC on Saturday, March 30, 2019 for both ARC and TRC candidates. There will be a four day classroom and range, in which the instructor candidates will teach a GWRRA rider course on the 4 th day. These are 10 hour days, with the ARC Rider Course Instructor Training to be held April 24-27, 2019 in Roanoke, VA and the TRC Rider Course Instructor Training to be held May 8-11, 2019 in Roanoke, VA. 15 MICHIGAN DISTRICT RIDE COORDINATORS Brent & Sandy Blackburn 14 Fall Road Trips for Seeing the Best Fall Foliage and a Whole Lot More Hi everyone, I know your chapters have set your color tours for this year. Sandy was surfing the net and came across this article for some suggestions for next year s ride. CLAIRE TRAGESER AUGUST 10, 2017 There is more to see in the fall in the U.S. than just leaves changing color (although those are worth seeing, too). As the weather cools and gets crisper, take advantage by going on a road trip. Here are 14 possibilities that will have you falling in love this autumn and each has a link to a route map to get you out on the road. Georgia's Blue Ridge Mountains You probably only think of fall foliage in New England, but southern parts of the country also have beautiful colors to view. Try a road trip through Georgia for warmer temperatures than up north. Start at The Russell Brasstown Scenic Byway in the northern part of the state, which takes you through the Blue Ridge Mountains along the Chattahoochee River. Stop in Helen, a mountain town modeled after a quaint Bavarian village, for the Oktoberfest celebration, and at Brasstown Bald, the highest natural point in Georgia and the ultimate foliage viewing vantage point. Make a pit stop in Clayton, an old mountain town with antique shops, galleries and restaurants. Take a hike in the nearby Chattahoochee -Oconee National Forest or visit wineries and vineyards in Georgia Wine Country. The Beachwood Inn, a tiny cottage inn, offers special wine dinners in the fall. Then head east to the Tallulah Gorge State Park, where you can explore a 1,000-foot chasm carved over millions of years by the Tallulah River. In November, visitors can hike and watch the biannual whitewater releases, when expert kayakers can brave the class V+ rushing rapids.

Rhode Island's Pint-sized Charms Take a drive through the country s smallest state, which is packed with fall activities without too much drive time between each. Start at the new Rail Explorers excursion in Newport, where pedal-powered vehicles trace historic railroad tracks to go on one-hour tours. Then head to Bristol to take in some historic mansions. Next, check out the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular at the Roger Williams Park Zoo in Providence. You can try the Soaring Eagle Zip Ride at night, which takes you past thousands of ghoulish creations. Then stop along Rhode Island s Brewery Trail, which includes Foolproof Brewing Company in Pawtucket. Finally, head to Woonsocket to cruise the waterways on the Blackstone Valley Explorer Riverboat, which runs at Cold Spring Park through October. New York's Finger Lakes Get outside the city and explore the Finger Lakes region for fall foliage and quiet country scenery. Start in the city and head through Pennsylvania, stopping at Gouldsboro or Tobyhanna State Park along the way. Make a detour to visit Jim Thorpe, a borough in Pennsylvania that is called the Switzerland of America because of its mountain scenery and architecture. While in town, go on a hike in Lehigh Valley or visit the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway and Eckley Miner s Village. Then take a tour of the Finger Lakes region near Ithaca, where you can stay at the historic Inns of Aurora, visit wineries or hike the trails. Pennsylvania's Wilderness Take a trip along the historic Route 6 in northern Pennsylvania for views of forests and mountains and other peaceful scenery. Take a detour to visit Straub Brewery in St. Mary s, Pennsylvania, which has been serving beer for decades. You can also take a trip through the Elk Country Loop, a 76-mile route that crosses through the Pennsylvania Wilds and past large elk herds. You can also stop at the Worlds End State Park for camping, cabins and hiking on the Loyalsock Trail and beautiful views of forests in vibrant color. The Blue Ridge Parkway This winding road covers almost 470 miles to connect the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina to the Shenandoah National Park in Virginia. Along the way you ll pass split-rail fences, old farmsteads, mountain meadows and scenic overlooks. Stop along the way at the numerous hiking trails, visit a local farm, and make a detour to visit Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson.

Connecticut's Covered Bridges Take your time exploring the roughly 100-mile loop through the northwest corner of the state. Pass through the Town of Falls Village in Canaan, where the churches, railroad depot, streets, and houses still look as if they were built in the 1800s. The Appalachian Trail runs right through town, so you can follow the white hash marks to go on a day hike. Then pass under the West Cornwall Covered Bridge, which covers 172 feet over the Housatonic River. Take in Kent Falls State Park or Lake Waramaug State Park for hiking and fall foliage, and then head to Litchfield to visit Lee s Riding Stables or White Flower Farm. New England's Historic Trails Yes, it s cliche, but New England does have beautiful fall foliage and lots of hikes and historic places to stop. Start in Boston and walk the Freedom Trail, a 2.5-mile, red-lined route that leads you to 16 historically significant sites. Then head west through Massachusetts Berkshires, where you can take in plenty of fall colors. Make a detour to Northampton or stop in the living museum Old Sturbridge Village, then travel south through Connecticut and New York to Philadelphia, where you can visit the new Museum of the American Revolution, which just opened in April. The California Coast You might think a drive up the California coast is best done in the summer, but it s also beautiful, and still pretty warm in the fall. Start outside Los Angeles and do an oceanside hike in Point Mugu State Park. Then trace the coast on Highway 101 to Santa Barbara, where you can spend a night and stroll down State Street, which if filled with shops and restaurants and decorated with white lights in the fall. Make a side trip to nearby Solvang, which is modeled after an old Danish town, with wineries and beautiful scenery outside. If you have the time, continue north for more ocean scenery. But remember, roads to Big Sur are currently shut down.

The Olympic Peninsula Make your way through the rugged coast of Washington, including Olympic National Park, for beautiful views of mountains and lush forests. Start in Seattle and loop around Puget Sound, stopping for ferry boat detours to Vashon Island or Whidbey Island. On Vashon you can walk the beaches or visit Point Robinson Lighthouse for a quick island feeling. Stop to hike in Olympic National Park, and then carry on to historic Port Townsend, where you can wander among the old waterfront neighborhoods and Victorian houses. The Gulf of Mexico Take in warmer temperatures than you ll get in New England, but avoid the unbearable heat and humidity of Florida s summers by doing this drive in the fall. Do just the short 19-mile drive along Florida s Highway 30A, which runs along the Gulf of Mexico, or extend it further. Stop along the way in one of South Walton s 16 beach neighborhoods, where the sands are sugar-white thanks to their pure quartz crystal makeup. You can also check out coastal dune lakes that only exist in a handful of places in the world, including New Zealand, Madagascar and Australia. For food, stop at Airstream Row, a street lined with aluminum trailers serving up southern cuisine. The Oregon Coast You won t get much fall foliage, but driving the Oregon coast has its own scenery to offer. Start in Astoria, then head south. Along the way you can stop for hikes at Lewis And Clark National And State Historical Parks, Ecola Beach or Crescent Point. Stay in Cannon Beach to wander among the large boulders, including Haystack Rock. Be sure to detour for the Tillamook Cheese Factory and Rogue Ales Brewing.

The Great Lakes Skirt the northern border of the country by driving along the Great Lakes. Start at the southern edge of Lake Huron and watch tall ship schooners or shop in the downtown antiques market in Bay City. Then head north along the lake, stopping to go hiking or boating at Thunder Bay River State Forest. Stop in Mackinaw City and take the ferry to Mackinac Island, where you can bike or take a horse and buggy around the historic 3.8 square mile island that is preserved as a National Historic Landmark. Classic Route 66 This historic highway has been marked in songs and movies, and is definitely worth exploring, even if you don t make it the whole way. You can start in Chicago and follow the turn-by-turn directions to trace the historic route. Stop along the way for memorable sights, including the Polk-a-Dot Drive In, The Oklahoma Route 66 Museum, the 80-foot Blue Whale and the Cadillac Ranch. The Mississippi River Trace the Mississippi River by following the Great River Road, which runs 3,000 miles if you want to go the full distance.
