1 NEWSLETTER February 2016 Woodie of the year Les Thomas Life Membership. Albert Hildebrand Albert joined the Woodies in 1995 and is a most respected, friendly and skilful club member. He has shown his magnificent skills in model boat and model vehicle construction. Albert has also been an accomplished turner over the years. His many detailed scaled models attract great attention in the club and also at the Woodies Exhibitions. Albert has participated actively in the growth and development of the Bellarine Woodworkers over his 20 years as a member. Congratulations Albert. Woodies Exhibition Much has been already said about the Woodies exhibition held at St James Hall in January this year. From financial, social and membership point of view our exhibition was very successful. Sales, both Club and Member sales were well up on the previous year and many positive comments were received from people attending on the excellent quality of the work displayed. Many comments were also made on the low prices charged for such high quality items. Thank you to all members who assisted in the setup and packing up of the hall. Special mention to Ron Badenhop for his usual very efficient organisation of the Exhibition and to Graham Thomson and Martin Horevoorts for the huge task of transporting loading and unloading all the display stands. Thank you also to the ladies who produced such a magnificent lunch for the 2 days for all members who attended.

3 NEW MEMBERS Jenni Blasco I was born in Barham NSW, (on the Murray). Moved to Melbourne when I was 18 to work for the Department of Defence Air Force and after that worked for Medical Applications (Hospital equipment installations and service) where I met and married my husband Lou. Lou and I and our two children moved to Drysdale from Melbourne (big tree change sea change), nine years ago. Number one child has finished university and is currently teaching at Drysdale Primary and at the grand age of 22 has just purchased her first home in St Leonard s. Number two child, at 19 is in his third year as a motor mechanic with REPCO Drysdale. I have an interest in Vintage Machinery and am a licensed Ham Radio Operator VK3FJEN. I have a couple of woodwork projects that I would like to obtain the necessary skills to be able to do a chess set out of old valves and a shadow box/ display case to house my collection of Morse code keys. After meeting up with the Members from Bellarine Woodworkers I am eager to try my hand at a couple of other interesting projects, all the while learning lots of new woodwork skills. Bill Lussier I was born in 1959 in Chicopee, Massachusetts (former home of Steven Arms and Tools where the safety match was invented) and where I started my working life making pizza at Giovanni s Pizza. I joined the US Army after graduating from high school and served for four years in military intelligence as an electronic technician including a year watching Soviet satellites from a base in Turkey on the Black Sea coast. After leaving the military I held a number of jobs including electronic technician, taxis driver, concrete finisher, courier, electrician s helper and hairdryer repairman. I spent ten years following university working in the aquaculture field growing scallops and fish before a chance encounter while visiting my sister in Adelaide led to a job teaching aquaculture for six years at the TAFE in Port Lincoln, South Australia. I have been working for Fisheries Victoria since 2004 in a variety of job and was transferred to the Queenscliff facility in 2013 where I work as a fisheries manager. My partner Sue, our dog Bruno and I live in Portarlington. Other than grammar school shop class, I have not done any serious woodworking. I had the idea that I would like to build a guitar but it was only when I met Charlie Christiaans at the recent show in Drysdale that I could see it happening. My immediate goal is to build a guitar that can be correctly tuned and that I can be proud of. After that, who knows what I will build. I am hoping to use 3 disciplines- woodworking, electronic circuitry and computer programming to solve a problem of birds eating our dog food.

4 Items of interest Martin has now put his terrific work outlining the History of the Bellarine Woodworkers in the library at Springdale. There is also a book of photos from The new Air Filtration system has been purchased and is now waiting for the next working bee for installation. A new vacuum cleaner has been purchased for the workshop. The vacuum and a Dust Deputy is being attached to a movable platform to make the cleaner more efficient. The Shepparton Woodcraft Exhibition is Saturday March 11 and Sunday March 12 at the Eastbank Centre, Welsford St Shepparton. Check their website for further details. An article written by Ray Austen on the history and progress of our club was requested and has been submitted to the Australian Woodworker magazine. Many photos have also been submitted with the article. This will be included in future edition. Charlie is offering another Router course on alternative Tuesday mornings in the near future. Details soon The Defibrillator is now mounted on the wall just inside the workshop front door and we hope it will never be used. The Woodies thank Paramedic Kevin Sullivan for donating his time to the club to explain its operation and for his talk on first aid Thomas the Train at Queenscliffe is April 2nd and 3rd, 10am to 4pm. Club items mainly toys are sold but room is available to display and sell some members work. We will need Woodies to man the stall and help set up. Please let a Committee member know if you can come. SHOW AND TELL Ian Gibbs turned 3 bowls A silky Oak bowl finished in Aussie Oil with border decoration A bowl from New Guinea Rosewood finished in Glow A Walnut natural edged bowl finished in hard Shellac Martin Horevoorts turned 2 lidded boxes but featured his ornamental turning on the lids. Woods used are Blackwood, Silky Oak and Red gum and finished in Danish Oil. Peter Heitmann Peters creative woodwork skills are at the fore again with this project he calls Giver of life. Completed on a lathe with Faceplate and Jam Chuck and use of his Bandsaw and finished in Danish Oil. Peter made this coaster using spouted timber and glass epoxy.

5 David Boyle David Boyle spent over 85 hours making this magnificent guitar as a present for his daughter. Woods used included Huon Pine, Redgum and Walnut and sprays finished in 30% gloss Stylewood. Mike Norwood Mike made his maiden appearance at show and tell with this well designed and most practical picnic set. Woods used where Mirboo and Spotted Gum. Dennis Plant Dennis showed these Relief Carvings which were taken over half finished and then returned finished to the donor as a remembrance of her husband. Laury Vella Laury designed and made this Router Jig specifically for making finger joints. The Router got salvaged from a dumpster, he bypassed the faulty switch and mounted it on the outside. For $48 got himself a cheap finger jig.

6 The AGM on Monday showed just how active and vibrant the Woodies are. A new President and Vice President and a number of new members on the Committee. Congratulations to those members who showed their willingness to be actively involved in the ongoing management and continuing progress of the club. All members thank Charlie and Ron for their skill, expertise and experience that they brought to the management and development of the club over the past years. From Ray Austen I met Charlie in 2009 when he was selling off turning blanks. He invited me into his house to see some of his creations beautiful turnings, furniture and a room with a collection of splendid guitars, which prompted me to ask if he would give us a talk on making them. This created great interest, and Charlie indicated that he should become a member, and this was duly arranged in November. In 2010, Charlie indicated that he would like to stand for President and was duly elected. His cabinet making and building experience made the erection of our workshop proceed smoothly, despite a number of hurdles to overcome. After six eventful, and musical, years, we must thank Charlie for his contribution to the club s progress.
