2 Guest Speakers Program, presented by Pieter Scheelings. Guest Speakers are invited to the Shed to speak after each Member s meeting on the 3 rd Wednesday of the month. 16 August, Amanda Harvey, Qld Rail. Qld Rail Travel Packages 20 September, Peter Wolfe, Trying to make paper in Borneo Latest goings on at the Shed A really good talk by Barry, Peter and Burt on Renewables, and the present energy supply situation. Bringing out some interesting views, from both sides of the podium. So interesting, the talk went well over the usual time and I think most people were still chatting as they went out the door. Well done guys. John, a relatively new member, was hospitalized recently but before we could get to see him at hospital he went home. Paul caught up with him there and delivered the card and chocolates. He is doing well and will be back at work on his bee boxes this week. Channel 9 broadcast live during their Today Show from our Shed, showing various activities that we do here. An excellent display of what is involved at Men s Sheds and the activities available. Not only of our Shed, these live crosses during the news and weather from 6am through to 9am went all around Australia. We had several s after the show, and a phone call from Mornington Peninsula, Victoria. Great publicity, thanks to all who showed up and participated. The Bar B Q breakfast went down well with the TV crew, and our people. If you missed this, there is a shortened version of the video on the website. Outdoor Walker group. Led by Les dekretser This group got extra coverage on the Today Show when Channel 9 were here, don t expect all of those guys to be there every day though, nor the singing session!! A typical week includes the following walks: Monday: The St. Lucia walk starts at the car park on Indooroopilly Rd, near the St Lucia Golf Club. There are several variations of this scenic walk, taking us into St. Lucia and Indooroopilly. Wednesday: The Graceville walk starts near the Indooroopilly station, on the Lambert Rd frontage. We now have several variations of this easy walk, taking us into Chelmer, Graceville and Indooroopilly. Friday: The Taringa walk starts at the corner shop in Taringa, at the intersection of Goldsbrough and Hillsdon Roads. This walk covers an up and down circuit, with variations of the route taking us into Taringa, Toowong, Indooroopilly and Chapel Hill. (Please contact Les de Kretser on or les@dekwright.com.au for more information) Training & Workshop Safety No training sessions at present. Keep in touch, some Router training coming up very soon.
3 Future courses will cover the following, a repeat of the originals if you missed out.: General Workshop Safety & Induction to Workshop Small Bandsaw Drill Press Timber structure & Faults General Milling Process Radial Arm Saw Thicknesser Jointer Table Saw Timber Joints, Adhesives and Fasteners Router table Before moving to projects, Paul will run a few specialist one day courses the first of which will be chisel, plane & knife sharpening. Once these one day courses are complete, Paul will move on to: Endgrain Cutting Boards, Chess Boards & Chess Tables Box & Drawer Making (dovetails & finger joints, etc) Drawer Carcase & Cupboard Carcase Design & Manufacture Table Making Chair Making Fielded Panel & other Fancy Doors Once members have been through these advanced courses, they will be capable of designing & making a wide range of projects unassisted. Bunnings Sausage Sizzles We were supposed to run one last Saturday but at the last minute we were asked to drop that day as they had triple booked it. One of the other groups stood down, the other, a kindergarten from Moorooka, wouldn t. We were offered a $200 gift voucher in compensation, plus both days next weekend, 5 th and 6 th. I have no idea how those days suddenly became available, weekend days are much sought after in the sizzle world. We have taken up the offers, now to find crews!! That will make 4 sizzles this month, I hope we can get the crews together, there is well over 3, maybe 4 thou $ to be had there. We then settle down to week day sizzles twice a month. That sort of money can get us equipment and improvements in the Shed without having to wait for grants to be processed. You will see that the roster sheet for these sausage sizzles has been moved to a whiteboard above the sign-in book, to be more visible than it was in the IT room. There is a pin-board there too, for small public notices for the Shed.
4 Photos of the Channel 9 Today Show live from the Shed, 18 July 2017
5 The Indoor Walking group leave the shed at 8am on Tuesdays and Thursdays. They wander around the shopping centre then finish up with a cup of coffee. Approximately 3.5km. Talking Tech meet on alternate Monday mornings and chat about anything technical, digital or otherwise. Bring along your problem and they can probably fix it for you. The Bicycle Maintenance group meets Monday afternoons, but will shortly start on a Friday morning as well, to try and move the build-up of bikes in the Shed. The Investment & Superannuation group meets at 4:30pm on the first Wednesday of the month. John brings along interesting articles to share, as you can too. This has been postponed again this month to the second Wednesday. Talking Books meet alternate Monday mornings to review books they have read. Tuesday Chat, every Tuesday morning is a busy time at the Shed. Come along and have your say. Thursday Chat as well. Cinema At The Shed, CATS, runs a classic movie on the last Wednesday of the month at 7:15pm. Look out for the notice in the What s Coming Up. Wood work has been covered elsewhere. There are a few small personal projects on the go, Chris completed another Campaign Chair, Paul a table top for his Wok burner, Bob a top for something musical. Roger has prepared some bamboo for bee hotels, and has pre-cut kit for the kids woodwork at the Church Fun Day coming up. A Coffee Table in Tune with the Meandering Conversation by Denis Hamilton Stack cutting with a portable jigsaw allowed the introduction of a meandering ribbon of contrasting Meranti to improve the appearance of a Radiata Pine coffee table top. This project is now published in The Australian Woodworker (August 2017, Issue 194, page 43). The article mentions that Denis is a member of the Indooroopilly Men's Shed and used the Shed's thicknesser and jointer in the construction. If anyone can recommend a plumber and electrician please contact Harry Howchin, or Seton Porter, We need a couple of quotes to install a hot water system in the kitchen with a line down to the wash basin in the work shop. 6 Shed of Men A special gift unto the world It all began with Aussie men. A place to find your very own kind And talk about back when. There s blokes that you can talk to Any time to clear your head. The welcome mat s extended at The door of your Men s Shed. Any time your mind is in a bind, And you feel the need to share, You ll find someone who ll understand, A friend who ll really care. Or simply if you have some time Make the Shed your second roost Come make a toy, a child some joy Hear a mate, who needs a boost. Go and find your local Men s Shed Where you ll feel that you belong. Go join the crew for a BBQ Or talk about whatever s wrong. You ll find the conversation rich These blokes have yarns tell. But let s be clear they ll want to hear, So tell them yours as well. There is one special shed I know It s door wide open to all. Ever yearned to be on the stage Wondered if you missed your call? Then come along on Friday night To Men s Shed Indooroopilly. Come have a go, put on a show Where no one thinks you re silly. Keith Osbourne 2017
