1 TAYLOR MOUNTAIN REGIONAL PARK VOLUNTEERS FOR OUTDOOR CALIFORNIA AUGUST 16-18, 2013 TrailWork Overview V-O-Cal volunteers will spend the weekend building a new section of trail in Sonoma County s newest regional park, Taylor Mountain Regional Park and Open Space Preserve. The route will follow the contour of the hillside to Todd Creek, weaving among the oak forest and grasslands at a sustainable and comfortable grade for all users. This new section will parallel the Western Route Trail where the trail is quite exposed and built on an old ranch road. The new trail will have more shade and is designed to have an easy grade of 8% or less, so accessability will be an important part of the project. As is true throughout Taylor Mountain, much of the route has patches of poison oak remaining after a recent eradication efforts, so if you are particularly sensitive, please make sure and tell your crew leader! We will have bunny suits available in sizes ranging from small to XXXL, too, for added protection. Volunteers will be divided into crews of 8 and be assigned to a certified crew leader who will provide tool usage, safety training and direct and supervise the trail work. All tools will be provided, but please bring your own gloves if you have them. Wear comfortable work clothing, with long sleeves and long pants for poison oak protection and closed toed shoes for the trail work. Bring a change of clothes and a chair for comfort around camp. The property offers expansive vistas in almost every direction. Taylor Mountain provides habitat for a variety of wildlife and bird species, and in the spring wildflowers abound. In addition to its tremendous scenic qualities and recreational potential, the park has a rich farming and cultural history. Named after the early Santa Rosa pioneer Taylor family, much of what is now the park was owned by John Shakelford Taylor. He developed the White Sulphur Springs Resort (Kawana Springs) on his ranch in the 1860 s, using the hot mineral springs found there. The ranch house near the camping area for this weekend was originally built in 1876 as a bathhouse for the mineral springs complex. The Great Earthquake of 1906 had effects in more than San Francisco; Santa Rosa had as high if not higher percentage of its buildings destroyed. After the quake the hot springs stopped flowing. The resort building survived and was converted to a residence in the 1960 s. Center Camp Volunteers will check in, make breakfast and lunch, and camp near the site of the old resort. This spot is a nice, flat, grassy area and is within a 15 minute and Open Space Preserve walk from the work site. Camping is optional, but is a great way for volunteers to relax and socialize with other volunteers after the work day. Dinner will also be served at the campground on Saturday evening. A Tecnu wash will be set up to remove any traces of poison oak at the conclusion of both work days, and solar showers are available to clean up after the work day! In addition we will be cleaning the tools at the end of each work day. Waivers If you have been to a V-O-Cal event in 2013, you will be asked to sign an affirmation of waiver ;; all other volunteers should print and bring the attached waiver with them to the event. Weather The weather is supposed to be sunny and in the mid-80 s for the weekend, but it could easily be foggy and damp, so please bring clothing for a variety of weather. Car Pooling and Bike Pooling We encourage volunteers to carpool because of the large number of people and limited parking. If you need a ride, or have space in your car, please try and carpool. Volunteers for Outdoor California engages the community through large scale environmental stewardship projects on public lands. Take 101 North from San Rafael (get to San Rafael over Richmond Bridge from East Bay, Golden Gate from SF). Continue thru Novato, Petaluma, and Rohnert Park towards Santa Rosa. Take the Yolanda/Hearn exit, turn left onto Santa Rosa Avenue. Turn right at second stop light on Kawana Springs Road. Continue on Kawana Springs, passing a large shopping center (Target/Costco) on left. Continue thru stop light at intersection Petaluma Hill Road. Turn first right past intersection onto Franz Kafka Avenue, then left on Kawana Terrace. Continue on Kawana Terrace to entrance to Taylor Mountain Regional Park on right and parking at top of hill by water towers. Sonoma County Regional Parks staff will operate a shuttle to the camp. 3 TAYLOR 3 MOUNTAIN REGIONAL PARK VOLUNTEERS FOR OUTDOOR CALIFORNIA AUGUST 16-18, 2013 FALL 2008 SCHEDULE Friday 5 p.m.- Registration and camping opens at Taylor Mountain Park Saturday 7:30 a.m- Registration, light breakfast, and lunch prep begin. 8 a.m- Morning greeting, announcements, stretching and safety talk. Project begins. 12:30 p.m.- Break for lunch on trail. 3:30 p.m.- Head back to camp. 4 p.m.- Drinks, appetizers and socializing. Showers available. 6:00 p.m.- Dinner and entertainment. Sunday 7:30 a.m.- Registration, hot breakfast, and lunch prep. 8 a.m.- Morning greeting, announcements, stretching and safety talk. Project begins. 11:30 a.m- Break for lunch on trail. 1 p.m.- Head back to camp to pack gear and truck. 2 p.m.- Celebrate the work and head home MEALS V-O-Cal provides all meals for volunteers from breakfast Saturday through lunch Sunday. Vegetarian options are available for all meals. Please bring your own reusable plates, coffee mug, cups and utensils. To minimize waste from our projects, we ask that you bring your own dishes. Hot water and soap are provided. A continental breakfast is served Saturday morning. Lunch is prepared before hitting the trails. You break for lunch on the trail around 12:30. Please arrive at camp by 7:40am to register, eat breakfast and prepare your lunch. Appetizers and beverages will be available at 4pm after the work day on Saturday. Dinner will follow at approximately 6:00pm. Hot breakfast is served Sunday. WHAT TO BRING AND WEAR For your safety, comfort and protection from hazards, please be prepared r with the following items. For the work day: Water, sun hat, sunglasses. and sunscreen. You will not be allowed on the trail without a water container. Work Gloves (if you do not have work gloves V-O-Cal can provide a pair to use). Sturdy shoes or boots with tread. Working in sandals or open-toed shoes will not be permitted. Day pack to carry water and lunch. Clothing for a variety of weather conditions! Insect repellent, allergy medicine, etc. HAZARDS HYDRATION: Although it is not likely to be hot, please drink plenty of water throughout the work day. If it is sunny, wear a sun hat and sunscreen. If you feel tired or weak, let your crew leader know and take a break. POISON OAK: There is a risk of exposure to poison oak at the work site. Clean with Tecnu after the workday and be cautious when handling your dirty clothes. TICKS: Ticks are always a hazard so it is important to check during and after the project. For around camp Warm clothing for morning and evening Plates, utensils, coffee mug and a cup. A change of clothes for each work day and for lounging at camp to minimize the spread of poison oak. IF CAMPING: bring a tent, sleeping bag, folding chair, flashlight, and other camping gear. A coffee mug is also necessary. Bring a change of clothes! CAMPING We will camp on near the picnic area at old resort site. If camping, please be sure to bring all gear listed above. If you are not camping, you are invited to join us for dinner after the work day Saturday.
