Information Evening Departure and Return Accommodation Itinerary Expectations Remembrance and War Graves Diary What to pack Families: rooms, hoodies, Code of Conduct, dietary requirements, medical
Why do we visit? At James Gillespie s we have a proud tradition of leading excursions to the World War One Battlefields of Belgium and Northern France. For students this trip deepens understanding of the conflict and allows them to connect with the past.
Departure and Return Friday 5 12 May 2017 Leave JGHS at 9.00am on Friday 5 May. At school for 8.30am at latest. Leave bags in courtyard Return to JGHS approximately 3.00pm on Friday 12 May 2017 Travel by coach
Friday 5 May Travel by coach to Hull. Arrive approximately 4.00pm You will need LUNCH for the journey down to Hull. We normally have a comfort break around 1pm at a service station. Make sure you have a SEPARATE overnight bag for the ferry as you WILL NOT have access to your suitcase. There are towels on the ferry but they are very small. Students accommodated in 4 berth cabins
Accommodation Hostel Munchenhof Markt 43 B-8920 Langemark Poelkapelle Tel:

Expectations We are all representing James Gillespie s High School. We will be visiting sites that were witness to some of the most abhorrent acts. Therefore respect of your surroundings is paramount. Code of Conduct
Remembrance Every pupil will be given a remembrance cross to place at a graveside or memorial of their choosing. The Last Post we will visit the Menin Gate for the Last Post where pupils will lay a wreath of remembrance.
War Graves You can find the location of graves by visiting the Commonwealth War Graves Commission at Print off the details and give to your child to give to me. Or you can me at by Wednesday 3 May 2017.
Diary Pupils will keep a diary Completed at evening Will be part of their National Qualification Added Value Unit
What to pack The weather in Belgium and France is similar to here in May, so please be prepared for wet weather (waterproof) cold weather, warm weather layering is good! We are on our feet for a lot of the time, so comfortable shoes are important, and also shoes that you can wear on grass. Please put your wellies in a SEPARATE, LABELLED PLASTIC bag. We leave them on the coach at all times, and it makes it much easier to distribute them when we need them.
