1 A Message from Our President Jodi Happy New Year! I want to say a special thanks to Caryn D. and Brian W. for putting on a really fun Keg and Get to Know Us party. They changed up the venue and put on an exciting raffle. Congratulations to Wendy W. for winning the last prize of the night. Skis!! A lot of you showed up at the door and took us by surprise. All-in-all it was a really fun evening out. I hope everyone that attended had a nice time. I want to share with you some of the things I ve heard about our trips. I heard a lot of you tell me that you thought the Keg and Get to Know Us party was too expensive. I want to use the Kissing Bridge trip as an example. Dana and Cynthia have tried to keep the cost of the KB trip (which is a one-night trip) at a low price. Lifts, one night hotel, bus transportation will all run you about $100 for a quad through the trip. Let s break down the costs if you do it on your own. If you rent the hotel on your own, it will cost you $80 a night. An 8-hour lift ticket will run you $40. Kissing Bridge is 200 miles from my house. That s 400 miles round trip. My Rogue gets about 25 miles per gallon so I need 16 gallons of gas to get me there and back. At $3.20 a gallon that s $51 just in gas. I am not factoring in the wear and tear on your car, taxes, time spent driving and the fact that there could be a snowstorm keeping you company for a 3.5 hour drive. If you can find 4 friends to jam their stuff into your SUV and strap the skis to the roof you might come out at about $75 each (Hotel $20 + Lift $40 + Gas $13). Not bad. But for an extra $25 you can have someone else drive you up and not have to worry about making a single reservation. If only 2 of you split the cost, it would be about $105 (Hotel $40 + Lift $40 + Gas $25). The Fagowees are charging $115 for a double. Now you ve got to take turns driving and having only each other to talk to instead socializing with a bus full of people and enjoying a cold one. I also want to remind everyone that times have changed. Everything inflates! It doesn t ever go down. We can t keep the cost of a trip the same as it was 10 years ago. It now costs the club more to rent a bus. The hotel increases their rates. Even beer has gotten more expensive. The Socials and Board members do their best to price our trips as low as possible without losing money. Please keep that in mind. We do have your best interests in mind. So what s going on for this month? Skiing that s what! Our first trip of the year is Kissing Bridge on January Dana and Cynthia have mixed this up a little bit and tried to keep the price low on this trip. Don t forget this trip only is BYOB! January 27 th is the Friday trip to Seven Springs. Donna B. or Chris S. would be more than happy to reserve your spot so don t wait until the last minute to sign up. A few other races are going on by you ll need to put your trip planning skills into play and we ll see you there. January 2012 The Newsletter of the Cleveland Fagowees

3 Fagowee of the Month Congratulations to our Fagowee of the Month, Dana G. Dana has been in our tribe for 20 years taking part in activities year round such as House Boating, Happy Hours, Sail boarding, bike rides, pack trips, Halloween parties, Clambakes, and skiing. She has also served as a part of the Fagowees board as a Trustee. This very important job keeps our club running smoothly and keeps your drinks full during our membership meetings. Dana has stepped up to the plate to run trips for our club as well. She is the trip leader for the Kissing Bridge weekend ski trip January 14th & 15th next month. When you see Dana, say hello, buy her a cocktail, and consider joining her in the fun, at Kissing Bridge ski resort. Our January, 2012, Fagowee-of-the-Month award goes out to a most deserving member. When you see her at any of the club s activities, please stop and give her a pat on the back for all her great work. Congratulations Dana G.! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! A great big THANK YOU to all the Fagowee members and to the Fagowee board for all of their support with my current and ongoing health conditions. I especially wanted to thank you for the kind and generous donation that was made on my behalf to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. The generous donation to PanCan is much appreciated and will be put to good use as the PanCan Network continues to find, research and develop new ways in helping to fight this horrible disease. I appreciate all of your support and helping me climb this mountain as there Ain t No Mountain High Enough! With many thanks and much love and appreciation, Denise B. Oliver! Once again a group of intrepid Fagowees boldly strode into the heart of Ohio City in search of a cultural experience, and once again, they were successful! Under the inspired guidance of Pat M., 35 Fagowees met at the Light Bistro to fortify themselves for the excursion. The food, drinks, and company were excellent and set the tone for the entire evening. After dinner, we met 12 other Fagowees at St. Pat s for the Near West Theater s production of Oliver! the touching story of the corruption of youth and the decline of morals in Charles Dicken s world (and you thought these activities were limited to the Ampol Hall). The cast and crew did a wonderful job on the play, and everyone enjoyed it thoroughly. It was a successful evening and will be repeated again soon. Join us!

7 Party Review - 20 th Annual Keg & Get to Know Us Party Sponsored by Village Ski and Snowboard Once again, the Fagowees show that we re a drinking club with a skiing problem. We had an AWESOME turnout with 100+ Fagowees (and potential Fagowees) enjoying the night at a new venue, BW-3 s in Strongsville. We couldn t get too many takers to try the Wild or Blazin wings, and man were the Blazin wings hot, Come on, Ice cream. A big part of the party is our annual Racer s Raffle, where we raffle off great prizes to raise money for CMSC s BEST race team. Huge thanks go out to Ed and the crew from Village Ski and Snowboard. They brought us a SUPER spread of stuff including skis, a ski trip to Holimont, gift certificates, and about 50 other prizes! If you are in the market for skis or a snowboard, stop by The Village. Mention that you are from the Fagowees; let s support the folks that help support our club. Huge thanks also go out to my new assistant Caryn. She really pounded the streets this year drumming up prizes from ski areas. We had a lightning round where we raffled off over $1500 of lift tickets and prizes to great places like Alpine Valley, Big Boulder, Boston Mills, Bristol Mountain, Holimont, Jack Frost, Seven Springs, Snow Trails, Holiday Valley, Peek n Peak, Sawmill, Snow Trails, and the grand daddy of em all, a 3-day ticket to Park City won by Rita M. Year after year, we continue to have a large spread of prizes, with over 50 prizes to raffle off this year. At the end of the raffle, we gave away our grand prize, a set of Blizzard skis, complete with bindings. The winner was Wendy W. (and I had nothing to do with that, Mike aka Hacksaw from Village pulled the winning number). The mother of all Shot Skis returned this year. Not just any old shot ski, but a 245 cm jump ski that has been on the wall at Village for the past three decades. This thing is HUGE; I think we could have five big Kahunas drinking from this bad boy! The raffle raised over $1000 for the Fagowees race team. This is important to the club since it helps finance race credits i.e. free or discounted racing. Finally, if you are looking for new equipment, Village Ski/Snow is running an awesome bus trip/demo day to Holimont on Weds 1/11; it s called Test Fest, and for $85 you get a bus ride to Holimont, lift ticket, and the opportunity to try skis from a whole bunch of different manufactures. Once the ski day is done, the plan is to party in Ellicottville for a few hours. If you have time and money left after signing up for Fagowees trips, check out their web site at or call for more information. Until next year, when the Keg Party itself will be old enough to drink! Brian & Caryn

Unfortunate for you, your race chairs are back for our 2012 season, Tedders, Caryn and Tom. We are in the fund raising portion of our year and making every attempt to get your race fees as close to ZERO as possible. So Tom, how can I help? First off, thanks to everyone who helped with our Fagowee Celebrity Bartending event at the 2011 Cleveland Ski Show. We brought in $2.41 to our race program. At least we didn t lose money and start in the hole. Returning this year was our popular bake sale with Tommy s BALLZ and my favorite, chocolate covered BACON!! Guys like BACON, what can we say!! We brought in just under $300 for the team. Next up will be our Keg and Get to Know You raffle. So get your tickets and try to win great prizes. After that we have the fun and exciting SLAVE AUCTION the first meeting in December!! No, I am not slaving myself out, just remember who does work assignments. Beer goes a loooong way in helping secure the right week *just sayin*. We will begin handing out our paper edition of what races you plan on attending in 2012 during the November and December meetings. Just to get the ball rolling and get us all into the gate bashing SPIRITS!! If you need to contact us, you know how call-someone-else (wink, wink). Use our address located on our fabulous website Race@fagowees.org. Here is something to think about: The world land speed record requires the minimum of skill, and the maximum of courage. So letz go out there and set some land speed records this year cuz us Fagowees are known for our minimal skillz. How many days until ski season starts?
