1 A Message from Our President My fellow Fagowees, Spring has sprung! That doesn't mean we re done skiing though. As I write this a number of New York resorts are still open, Smuggler s Notch reported 3 feet of snow in the last week and it looks like some places in Colorado may have enough snow to last until July. If you somehow didn't get enough runs in this winter you still have time if you re willing to travel a bit. But in the spring a Fagowees fancy turns to other things. Biking, boating, golfing, you name it. We have a lot in store for the off-season so hopefully you won t miss the slopes too much. In the past Fagowees used to compete in a volleyball league. I m told this was great fun but it died out as our members got older. We tried to get a team together last year but couldn't find anyone who wasn't recovering from some kind of injury or replacement surgery. This year we've decided to deal with the fact that most of our members should keep both feet firmly on the ground at all times. I m happy to announce we will soon launch the Fagowees Shuffleboard league! This is the perfect sport for our more experienced members. We will have men s and women s singles and doubles and a mixed doubles division too. We will have classes based on skill level similar to CMSC ski races. We have made arrangements with Ampol Hall to put shuffleboard courts in the back of the parking lot and there will be a keg of beer back there for all events. The league will run every Wednesday night beginning with a qualifier for all players on June 4th. We will play through the end of September and have an awards ceremony on a bus trip to Greektown Casino in October. We need help getting all of this up and running. We are currently forming a Shuffleboard Committee to oversee the league, act as judges, track team standings and run the bus trip. If you are interested please contact our league commissioner Mike Gumbish. We've had issues new attracting members lately but I think this will open us up to a whole new demographic. I m looking forward to a year of outstanding membership growth. Happy April! Bill April 2014 The Newsletter of the Cleveland FaGowees

3 Congratulations to the Fagowee of the Month! She was like a lot of new members, she became involved slowly, learning how to ski as she was joining our club. This was in spite of growing up about an hour away from Holiday Valley, Holimont and Swain. She really likes biking. A constant fixture on the Monday and Wednesday night rides, she has gone touring with Donna B, Renee S. Tommy K. Chip Smith and before that Chris S and Shelli S. She has participated and been a team lead for pedal to the point. In 2013 she successfully completed the CMCS Pan Ohio Hope Ride with several other Fagowees. She, just this last fall managed have big & tall guy-(named not mention to protect the guilty) accidently ride up and over her back, breaking a vertebrae. While this slowed her down she still got her skiing in. Which brings us to what really makes her special: She ran the trip to Holimont 2 years ago, last spring she volunteered to run for Winter Social and then got talked into becoming Co-trip leader on what was to be a small trip to Copper. The trip sold well due to some good pricing and the smaller trip ended up being larger, from 28 people to 50! She held her co-leader accountable, inspired him to reach new levels as a Co. Her efforts helped make Copper a trip to remember (I think it was her that arranged for the 27 plus inches of snow.) She also made sure that all the winter trips ran well, by bringing back old trip leaders and mixing in some new ones. She, thank the Fagowee Gods has decided to do Winter Social next year and is already working on making things better. So this somewhat quiet, personable, thoughtful and very organized associate professor at a local major university is April s Fagowee of the Month. Lisa D. 3

4 An Open Letter to All Our Members I have heard many reasons for not attending ski club meetings. There are the usual ones about work, distance and busy schedules. Those have always been there. The one that is dangerous though is this one: Why go, when I can get all my info off the Web. That s real convenient as long as there s actually someone there putting that information out. The trouble is, those someones are becoming fewer and fewer. Our clubs and CMSC rely on a changing pool of people who volunteer to become club officers and event and trip leaders. That pool is shrinking, and I think a major reason is the lack of attendance at all your ski clubs meetings. The real reason for meetings is to build a clubs sense of identity, to keep the organization alive, and to have the members get to know each other. New people coming to find out about a club get to see a good sampling of what the club is like at a meeting. What does it say about a club with two hundred members that can t even get thirty or forty to come to a meeting? What kind of picture does that give to a prospective new member? And worse yet is that half of those attending are officers. At a certain point the club fails since there aren t enough new people to replace those who leave office. The more members that show up, the more fun it is. Keep old friendships and make even more new ones. More importantly, you and others may meet, talk and become the future officers that keep your club going. All the clubs really need new people to run for office. Too many officers have been volunteering for too long, and they are getting tired. So come to a meeting. Relax, have fun, get involved, volunteer. It s work, yes, but it s also a lot of fun and your club stays alive. Or, stay home and pull up the club s web site for your information while you can Mike Kupiec Trustee: Fagowees Ski Club Trustee: CMSC Race committee: Fagowees Editors Note: Amen. Please consider getting involved by running for one of the board positions there are several open. See the position descriptions on page 6 and 7. You can make a difference! 4

9 From the Sitzmark. As the snow slowly melts, the FAGOWEES put away the boards and skis and break out the paddles and bike helmets. The Fun And Games On WeekEnds Especially during the Summer continue. May will see the Skulls start riding Mondays on various trails on the westside after work, check Meetups for the selection of the week and join in the peddlin'. Wednesday takes our bikers to the Towpath for more fun. June sees us Biking To The Bay, something different, we'll start in Toledo. The traditionalist have to wait till August 2 nd to Peddle To The Point, both a great way to raise money for MS and ride with like minded skiers idled by lack of snow. And then there's Pan Ohio Hope Ride, the marathon ride starts on July 24 th and finishes up on the 27 th, crossing the state ending up in the Queen City. If you get lost riding, try the Kelly's Island Bike Ride, frequent stops to refresh yourself (not too many!) and water coming up around you to let you know you made a wrong turn. Earthworms beware! Our golfers will be out! The rounds will move around the city week to week with valuable prizes (oh alright, chinzy prizes). More a strategist? How about euchre? Entrance fee goes into a pot (this was nice on the Colorado trip) with winners splitting it. July will see us in the Mohican Valley, a weekend of camping, canoeing (try the kayaks!) hiking, biking and who knows? Labor Day weekend Houseboat! What happens on Houseboat stays on Houseboat.period. Windchill factor is slowing some of the planning, but Blossom, Put-In-Bay, winery trips and other JIFFI's (just for the fun of it) are more than likely! Starting in June, our formal meetings go informal, join us as we have them at yacht or some of the finer clubs around town. AND you made it to the end of the month! Why Happy Hour Thursday of course! The last Thursday of the month, it's TBA so check our calendar. For Sale/Swap/Rent For Rent: It is not too early to reserve your ski get-away at Snowshoe Mountain! 13 MEMBERSHIP CORNER Membership Details Welcome to the club! Remember that membership is only until September 30 th. Every member renews their membership in the month of October, no matter when they join. Membership Assistant: I love my job and don t plan on resigning after this year (unless you vote me out!). But... I DO think that it is important to bring in more members to fill leadership roles. Are you interested in slowly learning about the Membership Chair s position? There is no pressure to be at every meeting or to complete the duties independently. If you like the duties that are required with this position, consider running for it in the future. It will be a much smoother transition when you already are familiar with the tasks. If you are interested in getting your feet wet with this board position, please see me! If you are approved as the official Membership Assistant, you get into all meetings for free!! WHAT an incentive, eh? Name Badges: Do you have your name badge? Have you picked it up from the membership area? If not, please do so. There are WAY too many unclaimed name badges. If you lost it, there is a $5 charge to replace it. New Fall and Winter 2014 members your badges are in! Please come to pick them up at the meetings Directory Corrections: New directories will be re-done this spring, Is your information printed correctly in the directory? Please double-check it & Cynthia at membership@fagowees.or if there is a mistake 13

14 Entry in a Fagowees Diary: Wednesday, February 12, 2014 Dear Diary: Sorry I haven t written any entries for a few days. But today I had to get up at the butt-crack of dawn (4:00 am is WICKED EARLY!!) to get on the Gray Line bus back to Denver airport. We were absolutely exhausted and many of us slept on the way back. You see, we 50 Fagowees had just spent an amazing 5 days sleeping at 9700 feet above sea level (more about THAT later) and skiing repeatedly down the Rocky Mountain slopes at Copper Mountain in Colorado (elevation 12,000-plus feet above Cleveland!). The oxygen is a bit thin up there, so my memory is a bit off. Perhaps I can remember things better if I tell you what happened on the trip by working backwards Last night, we had a great farewell party on the 3 rd floor of Village Square. Many thanks to Mark M, Mark P, Jeff K, and Sue B who welcomed the group to their condo. Fifty people were invited but an extra person showed up--we had a visit from the hotel security guard (maybe we were just a little bit too loud)! But then there is that old Fagowees saying, It s not a party unless the cops show up! The awards ceremony helps tell part of our story. Everyone showed up on time to Cleveland Hopkins airport on Friday February 7. No problems with airline check in some of us even got a free first checked bag thanks to a mistake by United Airlines! But when we arrived in Denver we learned that United made another mistake they never scanned the baggage ticket for the ski bag belonging to Al F so his skis didn t arrive on our flight. It was an omen Al rented skis on the first day and had a great time on the fresh powder. When his skis arrived on Sunday, he went down on his first run, hearing and feeling a sickening pop in his knee. Ski patrol came to his rescue. Al s award? A Copper Mountain ski patrol t-shirt! Dena T had asked a few weeks before the trip if she could sell 3 days of her 4-day lift pass because she didn t expect to ski that much. Boy was that prophetic! Dena had a severe case of altitude sickness, requiring a house call by the Copper Mountain medics who gave her cortisone injections and a tank of oxygen to get her through the first 48 hours. The question is, did she share or kill the tank on her own?? Remember this is Colorado, so don t Bogart that joint, um sorry, tank!! Thankfully she recovered enough to attend the final night s event. Dena s award? A ceramic drink coaster asking Got oxygen? that will always remind her that sea level is better for her lungs! Four in our group (Jeff K, Sue B, Marty & Tom W) arrived in Denver on later flights (that s why you travel with the group) and had to brave the snowstorm that dumped 27 inches of fresh powder on Copper in the first 3 days we were there. Snow is great on the slopes not so much on the mountain roads! More than a few knuckles were white from gripping the rental car steering wheel (or the passenger dashboard!) as they headed through the mountain passes to join up with the group! They missed our Welcome Party, but the trips leaders made sure they got a doggie bag, including cake. And more Fagowees wisdom a late shot-ski is better than no shot-ski! Their awards? Four Copper Mountain shot glasses to remember their wild rides. 14

15 Ever wonder if it is a good idea to pay a few bucks more for ski rental insurance in case you break the rental skis? Well, now you know. The Fagowees are a friendly bunch and welcomed Mary F on our trip. Mary is an awesome skier who once worked at Copper Mountain but is living back in Ohio now. Mary s rental ski decided to kiss a rock down a double black diamond trail and she nearly ended up with 3 sticks at the bottom of the mountain when she only went up the lift with two! Mary s award? A rock bracelet to forever remember that the Rocky Mountains are rocky! Lesson here is, if you are skiing the double s, buy the damage insurance! This trip had a lot of newbies on it so when a frequent Fagowees bash participant, who many on the trip did not know, began asking for a ski buddy, they weren t quite sure what to think! But Sue Lan M is a neat lady, and all who met her soon learned that! Sue Lan bonded with the boys from her condo building, skiing anything they skied. On Monday she hooked them up with a local that knew the mountain like the back of his hand and he took them on all the cool, fun, local runs. Sue Lan became the ski goddess in her own unique way and certainly earned recognition for her fun-loving and generous ways. Sue Lan s award? A Copper Mountain t-shirt with the saying: You don t stop skiing because you get old You get old because you stop skiing! We all have ways of trying save a little money on ski trips sneak a few beers, make dinner in the condo, hide your lunch in the snow under some trees. Did you know that the birds who fly in the Rocky Mountains know about digging in the snow for food? Mark P knows that now! He tried hiding his lunch in this fashion and when he came by to check on it a run or two later, he got there in time to save his beer but not his sandwich! We looked for a Lindsey Vonn metal lunch pail (like the kind he probably carried on the school bus in elementary school) but the stores at Copper were out of them. Mark s award? A bird ornament for next year s Christmas tree! Clevelanders are a hearty bunch and a little cold weather doesn t bother us. And there was so much to do and so little time to fit it all in! Several in the group didn t want to miss out on the Apres Ski drink tickets at the Incline Bar & Grill so they just threw a towel over themselves and walked from the condo s hot tub right on over! The ringleader s award? A sticker that says: Ski Naked. It puts color in your cheeks! (Right, Cynthia D?) It seems the trip leaders got us two drink tickets each and the beer selection was any beer brewed in Colorado that they have on tap taps. You know how many good beers Colorado brews? A lot! Rewind further to Sunday night: We braved the elements and boarded the Copper Mountain Village shuttle over to the East Village (where Al F was still hobbling on his injured knee) for a late Apres Ski appetizer and drink gathering. We thought we were having appetizers, but the Double Diamond put out a huge spread of food with non-stop pizzas coming from their oven, fresh salad greens, along with (again the good) beer and wine. Dinner was discounted for us, but few had any appetite left to order it! Our hosts were 15

16 most welcoming, even when they didn t accept our credit card and we forgot to bring a check (the check is now in the mail really!). We Fagowees felt so welcomed that we revived an another old Fagowees tradition Body shots cannot say much except Mike G sucked the 1 st beautiful belly button, then we believe your new/current president sucked the next, before he began serving up fuzzy navels. In the beginning, there was a birthday party. This was the trip s big event, the theme. Two beloved Fagowees, Tom K and Ann T, celebrated milestone birthdays the week we were on the trip (you know, those pesky birthdays that end in a zero!). So they wouldn t feel like they were all alone, they arrived in the Kokopelli Trail room of the Copper Conference Center to a room full of Toms and Anns (see the pictures below). They were serenaded to an off-key rendition of the Happy Birthday song and given commemorative custom t-shirts (thanks to the talented Fagowees merchandise chair, Donna B). Thanks are also due to Mark M who transported theme party supplies to Colorado to avoid additional United Airlines baggage charges! A very large birthday cake was devoured and party attendees also had the chance to win door prizes that included $25 gift cards to Peak Sports Ski Shop and a free day to demo powder skis. Yes, I asked around and never ever before was there the big out west trip that gave away door prizes. Note to future out west trip leaders: we got a 25% discount on demo skis and one out of every five Fagowees rented/demo skis on this trip. Some started with a one day demo and extended how long they kept them. Note to self - do I need an out west ski? I do think so! Did I mention we had awesome powder conditions for skiing?? It snowed the first night we were there and then the next 3 nights. Yes, people were finding powder every day, every morning, every afternoon. Can you say Fagowees Heaven? Well Diary, I am sure there is more that I cannot think of, but I am sure that I had a good time and need to make sure I am in better shape for the next big trip and remember to take even more pictures. Oh yeah, what was that with Gumby channeling Albert Einstein at the good bye condo party?? 16
