1 KADAP Inc Newsletter # 10 Introducing Graham Goodall Board Member I was born and educated in Hamilton, learned an Engineering trade in the RNZN and have worked on the repair of heavy machinery and in various sectors of the motor trade most of my working life. I worked in Tauranga as a Plant Supervisor/Pilot. I then owned and operated a Service Station business. After I sold my business I was employed by B P Oil as a Site Supervisor. When I moved to Kawerau 12 years ago I joined some volunteer groups, one being Kawerau Proud which was being established to promote Kawerau to the motorhome fraternity. With assistance from Kawerau District Council, Kawerau became the first Motorhome Friendly town in NZ. I am passionate about the KADAP concept and wish it every success, and with our enthusiastic co-ordinator at the helm it will continue to gain momentum. Please phone the KADAP office if you need some help with this. We have volunteers willing to help. Coffin Club meets on Wednesday from at the old Intermediate school. Fees are $10.00 for the year. 2 Kawerau Cottage Crafts Club Knitting, Crochet, Patchwork, Embroidery and Craftwork We Meet at the Masonic Lodge Hall on Onslow Street. We meet every 1st, 3rd, and 5th Tuesday of the month from 9.30am to 11.30am. Membership subscription is $15 annually plus $2.00 at each meeting to cover the raffle and morning tea. 3 As I Get Older I Realise Sometimes I roll my eyes out loud. The biggest lie I tell myself is I don t need to write that down. I ll remember it. I talk to myself, because now and then I need expert advice. When I was a child I thought nap-time was punishment. Now it s like a minivacation. Even duct tape can t fix stupid, but it can muffle the sound. Wouldn t it be great if we could put ourselves in the dryer for ten minutes and come out wrinkle free and three sizes smaller AND Getting Lucky means walking into a room and remembering why I m there. Chicken Breast with Mushroom Sauce This recipe looks nice and I bet it smells wonderful too. 2 Chicken Breasts, butterflied and halved 1 ¼ cups low salt chicken stock & 1/3 cup flour 1 tbsp. chicken stock to thicken ¼ tsp each Salt and Ground Black Pepper ½ tsp each thyme & oregano 2 tbsps. Olive Oil 2½ tsp cornflour 280g mushrooms, sliced 2 cloves garlic, minced ¼ cup cream 1/3 cup shredded parmesan cheese 2 tbsp. butter 2 tbsps. chopped parsley for garnish Mix together the flour, salt and pepper in a shallow dish and coat both sides of each of the chicken pieces. Cook in the oil on medium high heat about 5 minutes on each side until golden brown. While the chicken is cooking, melt the butter in another pan and add the garlic and mushrooms and sauté about 3 minutes until beginning to soften. When the chicken is cooked transfer to a plate and keep warm. Keeping the pan on medium high heat pour in the chicken stock scraping up the browned bits from the bottom. Add the mushroom mixture to the stock and add the thyme and oregano. Bring to the boil and let simmer 4-5 minutes until reduced by about half. Mix together the 1 tbsp. cooled stock with the cornflour and pour into the pan, stirring until sauce is thickened. Add cheese and cream and more salt and pepper if needed. Return the chicken to the pan and garnish with the parsley.

5 Kawerau an unofficial history. Most towns and cities in New Zealand have evolved over the last 150 years, some quite dramatically, some less so, growing through the various economic situations from villages to the communities they now are. Kawerau is one of the unique places that went straight from farmland to bustling township in a matter of months. The site was chosen for a specific purpose - to build a paper mill and supporting services, and located obviously with access to the geothermic field. The nearest settlements were Onepu and Te Teko. There is a very interesting and informative book called Kawerau Its History & Background, which is available at the Library, but sometimes it s interesting to find the snippets that aren t in such a book. In this Issue. What was it like growing up in a new town? I spoke with a person who arrived in 1956 as a six-year-old. Like so many other people in the town her family were immigrants. She remembers that the school buildings and grounds were tidy, there didn t seem to be any damage to the equipment (like no carving into the desks by previous students), and the students seemed to be isolated from other schools. She recalls that when she was in Standard 5 they went to Edgecumbe School for Manual, the boys for woodwork and metalwork, the girls for cooking and sewing. She attended the first high school, then the newly built one. There was a great range of after-school activities for children of the town, including sports, Scouts, Guides, etc., and a thriving Pony Club (which was her interest). The young people swam in the creek, and the picture house was well used. There were plenty of employment opportunities for young people leaving school, and although it was still not yet a bustling town there were enough shops to get by with. Eventually, as a young adult, she remembers that the town filled up, with less and less open spaces, and more and more houses and shops, but that s another story! In the next Issue A vibrant and growing town. Keep all receipts (and maybe a contents list) for food in your freezer in case of theft or damage to show to your insurance company for claims.
