1 ISSUE No. 4 Nov Page Antique Tractor & Machinery Club Branch 217 PO Box 2440 Page AZ th Annual Page Antique Tractor & Machinery Show - We did it! By Judy Kitson You plan, you work, you stew, you do it, and suddenly you realize it was over a month ago. But oh what good memories. The planning. Just as this year, by the end of Oct. last year I had begun to get our show listed in Page events calendars, magazine show guides, etc. for the next year. Posters were made up and distributed at any shows we attended. Jim Harding passed them out on the reservation. And we began in January to attend all the events we could and invite people to our show. The work. This year there were several new items at our show or old items done differently. Brand new was our scales which made their debut at our 4th of July pull. New to us were the set of bleachers found on an online auction, financed by Gene Tucker and picked up by Jim & I. We also acquired our own port-a-potty and fencing. With the help of Gene Tucker, Larry Tappan, Jim Cady and Jim Harding, the repair and installation were all complete before show time. Done differently was our overhead banner. Since last year Jim & I have acquired a vinyl sign maker and have been able to do the yearly changes on our street banner ourselves. Jim can also make signs for your tractors if you like (see ad, page 8.) I spent several days going around to the different businesses in town to acquire prizes for our Raffle, and worked at getting other advertising out. The stewing. Did we order enough food, etc. for the BBQ and how many should we expect for the breakfasts? Who is coming and who isn't'? How will we handle parking? Will one port-a-potty be enough? Will we have, do we want to have, and once we decide we do, where will we put the silent auction? Etc. The doing. And then the first day is here and the next and you just do it. This year there were some major changes in the displays. Greatly missed were the Trainer brothers and their display. The economy, and gas prices took a toll here and we understand and were glad they were able to make several of the shows closer to their home base. Conflicts of shows, caught up with Don and Barbara Meakin, and we understand, you just can't be everywhere at the same time. John and Esther Cadzow decided to take their time on their annual trip to Pennsylvania this year getting home with a trailer load of goodies, just this past week. Leo Vriesekoop had shoulder surgery and was in no condition to come. (We do wish him well and a comfortable fall and winter.) It was almost enough to make you wonder if we could still do a show? In our case we filled up the water wagon to settle the dust one last time and just did it and what a show (Continued on page 3)

EDGE&TA, our national organization of which PAT&MC is branch 217 is the source for our liability insurance. In 2011 there were so many claims that the insurance company they were using cancelled their policy in April They were able to find another company to insure them but the price per person went up $4. EDGE&TA covered the additional amount for 2012 but must raise their rates in Instead of sending EDGE&TA the yearly individual rate of $8 we must now send $12. That means a membership with PAT&MC is now $24.00 (with $12 going to EDGE&TA and $12 staying here to cover our expenses.) You will note above that the bank has begun charging us $8 per month. We are looking into one of the local credit unions and hope to have an account with them in place by the first of the year. 3 (Continued from page 1) we had. The Show is not the Show but they that go. (Emily Dickenson) Truer words were never spoken and those that came sure made the show for the rest of us. Dawn and Henry Miller have been true supporters from the first event. One major reason why we had them on our buttons this year. And true to form they were there at their usual spot this year with a nice engine display. Handmade, miniature model of a full scale hit & miss engine, owned by Dawn Miller. As people began arriving it was also good to see Paul Groeper again this year and have his help on the pull track. Jim and Gene Dawn and Henry Miller talking with Paul Groeper as Jim Kitson looks on. found they had acquired even more engines, motors, saws, etc. and put out a nice display as did Jim Cady. Many were running with pump handles going up and down, engines roaring as well as a demonstration of a corn sheller and grinder. A new treat this year was some blacksmithing. Connie Tibbits and Jim Cady had attended an intensive 3 day class the week before so it seemed only natural for Gene to dig out the blacksmith equipment he had bought a few years ago at Gallispie's auction, and let them show off what they had learned. He even made a nice stand for all the tools. This was a big hit with our audience and something we hope Jim & Connie will continue with as the items they were making were very impressive. 4 Two new guests that were expected were Tom Warne from Mesquite, NV who was bringing his restored Ford (see articlestory beginning page 8,) and Ron Zega, who was coming from California to meet up at our show, with his brother & sister-inlaw, who were vacationing in the area, also from California. Ron, one of the members of Ferguson Enthusiasts of North America, the group I edit Ferguson Furrows magazine for, brought his beautiful show tractor, a 1952 TO-30 Ferguson, with an attached border cultivator. Since returning home, he has already written: "We both had a great time. Having never been to Page and Lake Powell it was especially nice. Looking forward to next year. I am going to bring my 1952 TO-30 with the Hupp transmission, which I believe gives 8 forward speeds (high and low), plus it has a drawbar so I can pull. Looking forward to bringing home the gold. Got my Ferguson banner hanging in my garage above my tractor. Keep me posted if anyone has any Ferguson implements for sale. Thanks again for a great time. Ron" Another couple that were expected were Clarence and Janet Laubinger from Missouri. Traveling in the Utah/Arizona area they had noted in one of the show guides that there was a tractor event in Page, AZ right at the time they intended passing through. Clarence called and inquired about attending. They arrived on Friday but took in Rainbow Bridge and checked in bright and early for the show on Saturday. I was in the midst of setting up the raffle table and Janet quickly volunteered to help. And great help she was, as was Clarence, who we soon commandeered to do our announcing. It was great getting to know these good people and share ideas and see our show through their eyes and exchange ideas on events. Back in the planning stages, Connie Tibbitts offered to do a pancake and bacon and egg breakfast for us each morning. I must admit it just sounded like more work, and I doubted she knew what she was getting herself into. But being a riverboat captain and taking and feeding several groups of people down the Colorado every summer is no easy job either, but somehow after watching her fix a scrumptious breakfast Sat. and Sunday mornings, I've got a feeling she makes that look easy too. Our thanks to her and the company she boats with for allowing her to borrow one of their portable kitchens. Only problem is, I think we have all decided this is a definite part of our tractor event. Added that they were blueberry pancakes, she was a real hit. And it was nice to actually have breakfast. Usually I find on the show days that I never even get that first cup of coffee. Thanks Connie. And thanks as well to her helper Ada Hatch. Ada recently lost her husband and best friend, and it was great to see her find consolation in being part of our event. You are one special lady Ada. Breakfast was barely out of the way and drivers were getting on their tractors for the tractor ride. This year we had the availability of the big blacktop area and beyond, on the other side of the Navajo Village. The ride PAT&MC 4 Issue

5 followed paths through the desert, was closer to 45 minutes and they went far enough to see the lake. While the display area was quite impressive, it was hard to have all the areas ongoing with their demonstrations as most of the demonstrators were also tractor drivers. Some demonstrations never happened for that reason. We can see that for next year we need more members willing to take on these areas, and/or do more scheduling among members to get all the area covered and still be able to have fun. This year we counted up and we have more than 30 tractors, in various conditions, either staged around Big Lake Trading Post or scattered around town with our members. We also have quite an impressive display of construction and old farm equipment on the far side of the track. It was good to see Dean and Diane Dysart with his Oliver again from Kanab. Also from Kanab were members Theo McAllister and his wife, who brought their Power horse. This year they could compare notes with Walt and Janet Hanf and their granddaughter, who came up from Flagstaff with their Power Horse and Michigan Moline. Besides the many demonstration of driving the Power Horse, by Theo and Walt's granddaughter, Walt also tried his hand at pulling with the Power Horse as well as his MM. And pull we did, from about 10 to 4 on Saturday and 10 to 3 on Sunday. We pulled our own tractors and each other's and took in three new members, Trace Hepworth and Shawn Amberg and Thomas Warne. Our audience, while not large, was steady and more than previous years, so we are getting noticed. As PAT&MC 5 Issue

6 usual we had the tourists driving by, this year from Israel, Australia & China. And two different couples came from Kingman, just to see our show. Our BBQ Saturday evening had 40 attending. As usual we thank Jan Boehme for smoking the meat and fixing up the beans and making her great sheath cake and overseeing the meal. And our thanks to Dane Partridge and his wife for helping us get the slaw and potato salad as well as having the deli open Saturday for lunch. And just providing us with the area to play in. We had one vendor this year. Watt Herman who works at Big Lake, has begun his own knife sales and knife & scissors sharpening business. His area got quite a bit of attention and he made some sales an new customers for the sharpening. He also donated one of our raffle prizes. A knife like the one used in one of the Rambo movies. While we had several nice raffle items provided by local businesses and members, one always hopes for a show stopper. This knife did the trick and sold a lot of tickets. I want to thank Janet Hanf and her granddaughter as well as Billy Tappen for stepping in on Sunday to help with the Raffle drawing. Overall our raffle brought in $ Considering we were up against a raffle to benefit Cancer with the Motorcycle Octoberfest in the city park. That was pretty good. One of our biggest winners was Vickie who works at Big Lake Trading Post. She won the pictures and sheets which was great as she and her husband Paul have only recently moved to Page from New Hampshire. As a Big Lake employee, she is excited about our tractors on display and the events and is good to make sure their customers pick up one of our brochures on our display. Watt also donated a tractor shaped folding pocket knife as a prize to honor our tractor drivers. We put names of all the drivers in a hat and Paul Groeper's name was drawn. We all felt that was quite appropriate as he has been great to come and help each year. Finally the last tractor made it's pull, and the sled was pulled back up to the top of the track. It didn't take long for tractors to be loaded up, signs taken down, flags put away, etc. Our thanks to all who came and saw and helped and took part. We hope to see you next year. PAT&MC 6 Issue

John and Esther Cadzow have returned from PA with a full load of much sought over items and antiques. Jim and I were able to visit with them for a bit last week while picking up some items he had brought back for us as well as other items we had purchased earlier. These photos show the well stacked, stocked trailer before he began unloading it. It was a marvel to behold & a credit to years of packing just such trailers on previous trips. John says if you see anything you want call him and make an offer. Cell home Brief Review of the EDGE&TA SW Show put on by CCAMA in Cedar City, Utah last month Submitted by Thomas Warne The highlight of the day was four draft horses pulling together! My they are powerful and they seem to love pulling. That was my wife, Nancy with the draft horses. Also they had a huge "Big Four" I believe it was called 100 year old tractor. Why I didn't take a picture I will never know. The parade was also very good, my wife may start going with me now! The numerous sheep wagons were interesting as was all the new farm machinery "never heard of a hay steamer before"! It used to inject moisture into the hay when it is unusually

8 How to get from Before to After By Thomas Warne I bought my tractor in 2000 in Warm Springs Nevada which is between Las Vegas and St. George Utah. As the photo attests it was one wore out mess. I found out the local quarter car wash did little to remove the baked on grease and grime. After hours and hours and one filthy garage the machine started looking like something worth owning. I split the tractor apart to replace the seals that separate the transmission from the hydraulic system and the rear end only to find out later that this is deemed no longer necessary as the trans, rear end, and differential now all use the same oil! I drained all oils to find that the former owner had way overfilled everything, guess he felt that more is better! I installed a new PTO and found handfuls of gelled oil in the rear end. Doing all of this I found numerous stripped nuts and bolts, I had to invest in a tap and dye set! Now comes the body and paint, I had to buy a body panel along with the hood. Then I proceeded to paint the sheet metal the wrong color (bad info). Shows what I knew about tractors. One thing I found out was that everyone loved my tractor. I have pulled floats in the town parade and listened to endless tractor stories. Foreword to I am now retired and after numerous RFD TV Classic Tractor shows I decide to redo my blue to the proper Ford grey. I also had a wore out oil leaking, plug fouling engine to rebuild. Anderson Machine in Cedar City Utah did the engine rebuild. A new radiator and clutch were also purchased. The radiator could no longer be repaired as it was paper thin. I found out that body work is not easy. Thankfully a friend of mine took pity and did the bond and dent removal. I also found that the paint at the tractor dealership is cheap, not fun to polish the paint and get Ford Grey on the cloth! So the paint is now done, had to have help from the local body shop here also, I did most of the painting though. I would prefer not to divulge the money spent on this project. No money will be made here but it has all been well worth the time and investment. In remembering what I had, to what I have, is a great feeling, something one just doesn't go out and buy. 9 Editors Note: Tom was one of the many nice surprises and new friends and new Members that came out of this year's event. Driving over from Mesquite, NV with his nicely restored Ford in tow, he arrived as we were setting up on Friday, and stayed through Sunday morning. And it seemed that as soon as he got home he was sending photos back of our event. What a nice surprise as I had taken very few, and he seemed to capture us at our best. Tom also found time to put his Ford in the pull and made the tractor ride. He then sent photos of his tractor restoration along with this nice article about his tractor. What a great new member we look forward to seeing again next year. PAT&MC 9 Issue
