Check out the latest deals at /holidays Family get-togethers One of the beauties of the National Forest & Beyond is the fact it is so easily accessible from the M1, M6, A50, M42 and A38. Centrally located in the country and with an excellent road network in and around the Forest, far-flung families often choose this area for get-togethers. You can even stay in the most modern, environmentallyfriendly YHA in the country. Forget the image of large grey dorms in dusty old youth hostels, YHA National Forest has bright family rooms, a bar and bistro, internet access, a games room and is a stone s throw from Conkers the interactive family visitor attraction at the heart of The National Forest. Come & try something new in the National Forest & Beyond! The National Forest is one of Britain s boldest environmental projects, creating a Forest for the nation across 200 square miles of Leicestershire, Staffordshire and Derbyshire. In less than 20 years, one of the least wooded parts of the country has been transformed. Nearly eight million trees have been planted, trebling the woodland cover, creating habitats for wildlife Woodland cover 2009 (18%) Be part of the Forest s creation and a beautiful landscape for people to enjoy. These trees, about 90% broadleaf, are maturing well and new woodlands continue to be created. The ultimate goal is for woodland to cover around a third of the Forest area and to link the ancient forests of Charnwood and Needwood. Woodland cover 1991 (6%) You can help create this forest in the making through our plantatree scheme. You will be invited to a special tree planting day and receive a certificate. The surfaced trails weave around the lakes, ponds and wildflower meadows for all to enjoy. Immerse yourself in the wonderful mature woodlands of Charnwood and Needwood, the two ancient forests on each end of The National Forest. Bradgate Park is a mustsee. 6 Treasures of past the This area is steeped in history. And Calke Abbey is a must-see! It remains frozen in time from when its former eccentric and reclusive owners allowed the house to slowly fall into disrepair. It is now meticulously maintained by the National Trust to preserve this state of faded grandeur. Meet the characters who lived in this fascinating house during Calke Alive days. Find out how harsh life would have been working in a 19th Century blast furnace at Moira Furnace Museum or feel the power of the working beam engines at Claymills Pumping Station. Workings of a bygone age Based on a former coalmine, Snibston s colliery and audio tours reveal the mining memories from those who grafted underground. Like mining, pottery was a major industry for this area. Sharpe s Pottery Museum traces the history of this industry and hosts regular talks, events and exhibitions. Kings and noblemen were regular visitors to this area as far back as Saxon times when the Mercian kings of the 8th Century were buried in Repton. Mary Queen of Scots was held captive in Tutbury Castle and Bosworth Battlefield is where Richard III, the last king of England to die on the battlefield, lost his crown to Henry VII. You can see at Donington le Heath Manor House the bed where he allegedly slept before setting off to battle. Dating from the 13th Century, this timber framed house with its converted barn tea room has been beautifully restored and has exhibitions and re-enactments throughout the year. Stroll through the formal gardens of Melbourne Hall or among the rare tree species in Britain s first ever country park Elvaston Castle. Take afternoon tea at Catton Hall or visit the Museum of Childhood at Sudbury Hall. The Hall s lavish interior was the setting for BBC s Pride and Prejudice. But the most poignant link to our past is the National Memorial Arboretum. Over 100 woodland gardens and sculptures are dedicated to military or civilian organisations, events or conflicts to create a living tribute to those who lost their lives in the 20th Century. A silence is observed daily at 11am and remembrance services are held regularly in the chapel. Our Tourist Information Centres stock books and guides on the area s rich history.
