If you haven't made your hotel reservations, better do so. We have people leaving Orange County on July 22nd, a few joining us along the way, and others joining us for the return trip. Have some FUN and come with us! Tour plans to Portland are finalizing. Member Bill Jones, in San Rafael, has already organized a dinner night for us at a local restaurant, on our first night out. 2 Our Chef June Picnic When: Saturday, June 21 at 11 AM Where: Irvine Regional Park Richard Brewbaker will be in charge of procuring hot dogs, buns and condiments. The club will provide paper products and drinks. Members can bring salads, desserts. Anything enjoyed with hot dogs and a picnic! Director s Message It was nice to see so many of our members having dinner and supporting Spires, without them we wood be looking for a new meeting place, and each time we move meeting places we stand a chance of loosing members. Lee Wangerin gave a very good presentation on Earthquake Preparedness. He passed out literature so we could each prepare our own kits for surviving a major earthquake. We had two new potential member and a few old timers that are not able to attend on a regular basis. After the meeting we had a short board meeting to discuss finding a new place for our club property. All members were invited to attend. 3 ORANGE COUNTY BCA General Meeting Minutes May 20, 2014 PRESENT; Richard & Nancy Brewbaker, Sheridan Bishop, John & Jeanne Dyke, Lee & Linda Wangerin, Denny McCartney, Bill & Dawn Kay, Jerry Kirby, Eddie Rusnik, Louis Schuchart, Norm Kredit, Dave Powers, Baron Night! Sheridan called the meeting to order at 7:23pm. Members, not seen in a while, Louis Schuchart and Norm Kredit and visitor Denny McCartney were introduced.! There were no minutes, as it was a tour month. The tour to Griffith Park was discussed.! Linda Wangerin shared a cute anecdote titled, For Those Born Before GUEST SPEAKER - Lee Wangerin, distributed a pamphlet, Camping at Home. He explained what items were essential in an emergency situation. There should be enough supplies to last for 21 days and camping at home would allow you to protect your property from looters. TREASURER'S REPORT! Jeanne reminded us that membership dues are soon due. The form will appear in the July Running Board. She requests that an application be included with each membership so the info. included in the roster will be accurate. Cost for members wishing mailed copies of the Running Board are $25, and ed copies are $20.. OLD BUSINESS! Sheridan requested members submit pictures of their cars for inclusion in or newsletter.! New Member Report Larry was absent but Jeanne reported that he was doing a good job contacting potential club members.! Tours Richard informed us that the tour will pick members from other BCA clubs along the route. Bill Jones, in San Rafael, is planning on making dinner reservations for us for the night of July 22nd. He would like a head count as to the number of reservations he should make.! Badges - Four dollars was collected.! 50/50 Raffle Thirty - nine dollars was collected. Linda Wangerin won the draw.! October Car Show Baron shared information about the upcoming Silverado Days Car Show in Buena Park. It was decided that we would like to join them. Date would be October 19th, at William Peak Park, Knott Ave.& Eldorado Dr., Buena Park. Baron will coordinate between our club and theirs.! Area Car Shows Jerry Kirby shared dates and locations of various shows in the area. Anyone wanting more information can contact him for specifics.! Club Storage Keith Bauer has been storing BCA items for us for soooome time. He now needs the space being used for his business. Arrangements to move the stored items was made for Sunday, May 25th, at 10:am. We will send him a note to tell him how much we have appreciated his assistance. 4 DRIVING TOUR TO THE BUICK CLUB NATIONAL IN PORTLAND JULY The Buick National will be on the west coast, in Portland, Oregon in July. Richard Brubaker, our 2014 Wagon Master, has planned a driving tour to the meet. All interested are welcome. You may join all of Richard s itinerary or join at any point along the way. Outbound (map at right) (A) Depart July 22,2014 From Mimi's Cafe 1400 S.Harbor Blvd Anaheim. 5:00 am. First stop, Village Cafe 112 W. Branch St. Arroyo Grande, Ca. for breakfast departing 9:00 am. 200 miles. (B) First night : July22 Motel 6 San Rafael, 737 Francisco Blvd. East # , 275 mi. (C) Second night July23, Riverside Inn Grants Pass, Or. 986 SE 6th Street # mi. (D) Third day:july 24 Red Lion Hotel on the River Portland, Or. 909 N. Hayden Island Dr. # Return (with some options) South Bound after show First nigh July 27. Red Lion Hotel th. St. Eureka. # or# mi. From Eureka we plan on driving down the Avenue of the Giants. Taking our time to enjoy the Redwoods. Second night San Rafael Motel Francisco Blvd # mi. From San Rafael you have a choice of driving down Ca 1 or down Ca 101 to home or if we want spend a night in Cambria at Cambria pines Lodge Burton Dr.# if interested in a Hearst Castle tour, let us know. 5 Turn-O-Stop Indikator (from front page) This early turn-signal indicator was invented by a remarkable but virtually unknown inventor, Timothy Bernard Powers who began patenting inventions in the 1890 s up until just before WWII. Timothy began his career selling bicycles in Brooklyn about 1890 but was soon inventing things. One of his first published inventions was for a spectacular ride for the Columbian Exhibition held in Chicago in His ride didn t make the cut however and the fair ended up instead with the world s first Farris Wheel. In 1900, Powers invented an electromechanical mechanism that could operate a player piano with more expression than ever before. He was awarded a prize by the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia and an example using this invention is at the Nethercutt Museum in Sylmar. Powers, came up with a unique idea for a clock driven by electricity in A company was started in London called the Eureka Clock Co. that manufactured these clocks starting in However, WWI recruited all the skilled labor and the company had to close up shop. The clocks are very collectible and prized by many for their interesting movement. Powers also invented bathroom scales for Jacobs Bros., aka Detecto, and invented the screwdriver with interchangeable blades, something we probably all have in a drawer somewhere. In 1919 Powers was awarded a patent which he assigned to other for a turn-signal indicator for cars that became the Turn-O-Stop shown in the 1920 ad (above) from Motors magazine. One of Powers last inventions was a tool for stamping serial numbers onto equipment and other devices. This invention was the beginning of the Numberall Corporation which started on Staten Island and still manufactures products today. ~ed 5
