1 THE LARKIN TRAIL
2 Discover A Poet s Landscape Welcome to The Larkin Trail! Follow in Larkin s footsteps to see the diverse landscapes and rich architecture of Hull and the East Riding through a poet s eyes. Philip Larkin is widely regarded as the nation s favourite post-war poet. The Larkin Trail takes you on a literary journey through the city and countryside, taking in the buildings, streets and parks where Larkin lived, worked and visited, and which inspired his poetry. The Larkin Trail consists of 25 specially commissioned artworks, at sites across Hull and the surrounding countryside, featuring poetry extracts and information about the poet s life and work, linked to the location. You can also visit the Larkin Trail website to explore the writer s work and life through a unique, interactive archive of poetry, artwork and biographical information.
3 The Larkin Trail Discover a Poet's Landscape The Larkin Trail is made up of three parts: Larkin s Here (City Centre) starts at the Hull Royal Hotel, and takes in sites across the city. Discover the pubs where Larkin indulged his passion for jazz, and explore the literary and architectural history of this isolate city spread alongside water. Larkin s Here (Beyond the City Centre) enables visitors to explore the fringes of the city, particularly the University and Avenues area where Larkin spent much of his time. The trail takes in the houses Larkin lived in, the University Library which he oversaw the building of, and the parks and green spaces which inspired so many of his poems. Larkin s Elsewhere explores the wider countryside. From the quiet villages and churches that Larkin loved to visit, to the stark beauty of Holderness Plain and Spurn, the trail reveals the landscapes celebrated in Larkin s writing and captured in many of his photographs and letters.

5 Larkin s Here City Centre Trail Locations 1-13 Est. time 2hrs Here, the City Centre section of the Trail, leads you to places frequented by Larkin, both when he was alone and when in the company of others. It guides you to pubs where he enjoyed a drink, pauses at places where he indulged his passion for jazz and takes you to the point from which he could look back at this isolate city spread alongside water as he took the ferry over to Lincolnshire and back. This part of the trail is named after Larkin s hymn to Hull and the East Riding, the poem Here. The trail takes in a number of sites that feature in Larkin s poetry, beginning at the Hull Royal Hotel (Friday Night in the Royal Station Hotel), and taking in Paragon Station (Whitsun Weddings), the City Hall (Broadcast), and Marks and Spencer (The Large Cool Store). It provides an insight into Hull s architectural and literary history, and finishes at one of Hull s newest buildings, Hull History Centre, where you can grab a coffee, explore the city s heritage and delve deeper into the Larkin archives. As with any city centre, some parts have changed radically over the years. Other streets look almost the same as they did decades ago, during Larkin s time here, and before. Hull s fascinating Old Town, with its cobbles, porticos and intriguing staithes, is one such area. Tracing his footsteps across the city, you feel that wherever he was, Larkin was simply Here.

9 Larkin s Here Beyond the City Centre Locations Est. time 2 hrs Beyond the City Centre, the journey visits places that were at the heart of Larkin s life in Hull. From the lucent comb of Hull Royal Infirmary, where he stayed as an inpatient, the Trail guides you on up to the old General Cemetery of which he was so fond, then to Pearson Park, where Larkin lived in an attic flat for 18 years. Entering the long, leafy boulevards of The Avenues, the Trail pauses for reflection at the place where he went to the inevitable and died. The journey continues along Newland Avenue, the busy thoroughfare where Larkin liked to shop. With its lively café culture, this is the perfect place to recharge your batteries. Your journey then continues past the large house and garden he reluctantly bought, and guides you across to the University of Hull, where Larkin worked in its lifted study-storehouse as the University Librarian for 30 years. The Trail then takes a suburban direction and visitors can drive, cycle or take a bus to Cottingham, the large village where Philip Larkin is buried.

13 Larkin s Elsewhere West to East Locations Est. time 1 day Larkin s Elsewhere takes in locations across the surrounding countryside, from West to East. The Trail is no longer linear and marks several significant locations peppered around the East Riding. They could form the basis of a fascinating short break exploring Larkin s dear landscape Larkin took many days out, alone and with friends, visiting these locations, which informed many of his poems. Six miles from Cottingham lies Hessle, former home of Larkin s first publishers, George and Jean Hartley. A short distance away, Hessle Foreshore stretches along the banks of the broad Humber, dominated by the suspended giant step of the Humber Bridge. Beyond, inland and further to the west, amongst the thin and thistled fields around the Humber estuary, lie the quiet villages where Larkin loved to cycle. From one of these villages, Blacktoft, the Trail moves on to the delightful market town of Beverley, as Larkin liked to do when returning home on his bicycle. To the east of Hull the Trail heads out across the ever-lonelier Holderness Plain, where silence stands / Like heat, calling at Patrington to admire its exquisite church. Finally, the Trail enters the dunes and rough grasses of Spurn Point, a remote spit of land curving into the North Sea, where Ends the land suddenly beyond a beach / Of shapes and shingle.
