2 n this twelfth day of July, two thousand and nine in the reign of Elizabeth II, the Grace of God, Queen of the Realm, Head of the Commonwealth and Defender of the Faith, we the Mayor, Councillors and Citizens of the Town of Beverley in the County of York, do hereby, with one voice and consent of tongue and heart, publish and proclaim that a week of celebrations shall take place in the Town to acknowledge and give thanks to the past Governors and Burgesses of Beverley and their craftsmen and workmen, who had the foresight to defend out Town and erect battlements to protect Beverley. It was in the year of fourteen hundred and nine in the reign of Henry IV, the Grace of God, King of England, Defender of the Faith that Burgesses agreed to the building of North Bar at a cost of 96. Almost six hundred years to the day, North Bar is the only remaining bar gate to remain and we give thanks to our predecessors who have preserved such a magnificent building. Our celebrations are testimony to the affection by which we regard such a fine piece of architecture and we entrust this beautiful building into the guardianship of our Town s leaders, both now and in future years, to ensure that it remains for centuries to come. We give thanks to the Town s civic leaders and visiting dignitaries, various groups and organisations, church representatives and school children, all of whom have joined together to show great civic pride in Beverley. May this be the first of many celebratory events, for we have much to be thankful for in this great Town. May we all show due deference to Beverley, our beautiful Market Town, and may it prosper for many years to come.

3 Mayor of Beverley s Foreword Both as the Mayor of Beverley and a life-long Beverlonian, like many people I am proud of our local heritage. Along with many other historic buildings Beverley is fortunate enough to enjoy, North Bar is a matchless and treasured part of our town. That it has stood the test of time so well for 600 years, is a tribute to both those craftsmen and workers who built it in 1409 and to the many people over the following centuries who provided maintenance and care. It has kept guard over Beverley for generations and has seen many changes over the years. There cannot be a resident in the town that has not driven or walked, at least once, through the original gateway and adjoining passages. By doing so, we quite literally follow in the footsteps of our ancestors, who would be proud to know that in the 21st century their descendents are coming together as a community to celebrate this important anniversary. Too often do we hear of our past being forgotten, important monuments and buildings lost to rack and ruin and the fear that future generations will have lost their local roots. Thankfully, this will not be the case with North Bar. In Beverley we have many people, young and old, who are enthusiastic about keeping local history breathing. Events such as this acknowledge the passion they have for not just remembering the past, but keeping it alive for the future. On behalf of Beverley Town Council, I would like to thank all the many individuals and organisations that have worked together to mark this historic occasion. I hope everyone has a very enjoyable day and that in another century, those who come after us will gather once again to celebrate this most unique and robust of buildings - Beverley s very own North Bar. Councillor David Elvidge, Mayor of Beverley Partnership Chairman s Foreword Two thousand and nine is quite an historic year for our town in that it is the six hundredth anniversary of the building of the North Bar, the only remaining one of three, which protected the town in the Middle Ages. Not only is it unique to Beverley but it is the only brick built gate in England which has survived the passage of time. The idea for this celebration came from one of the members of Beverley Renaissance Partnership who together with Beverley Town Council, members of the public and numerous community groups, assisted by East Riding of Yorkshire Council have staged this event. I believe that it has caught the imagination and support of the town and has resulted in a whole series of cultural activities and entertainments over the period of a month, culminating in a final day of celebrations on the twelfth of July. On behalf of Beverley Renaissance Partnership, I wish to thank all the community groups, individuals and organisations, who have taken part giving so freely of their time and expertise in helping to stage this event. Please ensure that your property remains with you, children are supervised and dogs are kept on a lead at all times and not allowed to roam freely. In the event of an emergency you will be notified by the Emergency Services. Please follow the instructions of the Emergency Services, organisers and marshals on the day. Please familiarise yourself with the safety signs around the festival area. Public toilets are located on Dyer Lane and lost children should be dealt with at the St John s Ambulance station. Pedestrian emergency exits and meeting points are as follows: Toll Gavel leading to Wednesday Market; Dyer Lane leading to Walkergate and onto Tesco s car park; Lairgate leading to Coronation Gardens along.

6 Historic Bus Tours 4th and 11th July 10am - 2pm A historic journey through Beverley with stop-off points along the route and a guide explaining places of interest. Buses have kindly been provided by Acklams of Beverley and the historic tours will be free of charge. Local historians will be your guides and a conductor will be on board for the journey. The tours begin at Beck Head, Beckside on the dates shown. The famous Beverley Bar Bus, designed to fit through the bar, will be sited in for the Celebrations on 11th and 12th July, courtesy of EYMS.
