2 Ulysses Club Inc Wagga Wagga Branch Minutes for meeting held on August 16th 2017 Present: Pat Combs Geoff Mackney Mary Smith Les Smith Barry Jones Lorraine Lawrence Irene Burbidge Trevor Bates John Starr Jackie Starr Jarrod Dale Ian Adams Ann Ray Kelly Dale Gerhard Grauer Lesley Grauer Jean Purvis Neil Purvis RogerSelf (19) Apologies Di Middleton Bob Middleton Alan Wells Gloria Hatter Jan Wells Peter Meiklejohn Graham Mutton Elaine Scott (8) The meeting got under way at 7:32pm and was called to order by President, Trevor Bates. Pat Combs read the minutes of the July meeting, moved that they be accepted and Mary Smith seconded the motion. There were no matters arising from The Secretary s report. Pat then tabled some items of correspondence in that had been received since the last meeting 1. MIA monthly newsletter and ride calendar 2. Details of a first aid course being held on September 16th at the Lawson Motel, in Tarcutta Street, starting at 10:45am The course is usually $85 p/p but with a subsidy from the RMS will be $45. And with the Ulysses Club subsidy the to each member will only be $ Details of the 1st Road Warriors Road Festival (K.I.D.S Foundation) to be held at Yarrawonga on the 27th, 28th, and 29th of October. 4. Details of the 20th Annual Golden Dragon Rally to be held at Tarnagulla from 29th September to 1st October. Pat moved that the correspondence be accepted and this was seconded by Les Smith. In the absence of the Treasurer, Elaine Scott, Pat Combs tabled what he could of the financial affairs and after a phone call to Elaine established that the current balance is $ (She thought the meeting was next week) $197 was raised at the Morundah luncheon on August 6th and after expenses of $104 for prizes which left $93 profit which is to be donated to UCARF. In all a cheque of $713 will be donated to UCARF made up of $120 from the Christmas in July function, $93 from Morundah, and $500 from Branch funds. Pat moved that the details of the Treasurers report, as tabled, be accepted and this was seconded by Lesley Grauer. A discussion was held regarding the ride to the Temora Aviation Museum on Saturday 19th of August and the outcome was that the ride will leave Bill s Café at 9:30am, travel to Junee and pick up the Starrs, at the Junee Post Office, and then continue on to Temora. The Tri Branch meeting in September was discussed with only a few committed to going from Wagga and Griffith, with little or no response from Albury/Wodonga. This led to a discussion regarding the Morundah ride on the first Sunday in August with a disappointing response from the Branches and maybe the function has run it s course. When it started 15 odd years ago we had little trouble attracting over a 100 participants, but the last gathering we only got 30. The biggest problem is coming up with definite numbers for catering purposes. We reckoned on getting about 50 but at the last minute scaled this down to 30. However those that went did enjoy the day out and because of the inclement weather some went by car.. Irene Burbidge raised the subject of this year s Christmas Party and moved that it be held in Wagga this year as the last three had been held out of town. The motion was seconded by Trevor Bates. The social Committee will now sort out a venue and report back to the September meeting. Meet and Greet Saturdays at 10:00am Wednesday Rides 9:30am Good Food - Good Coffee - Friendly Sevice 2

3 Geoff Mackney advised the meeting that he is leaving Wagga to relocate in Lismore. Geoff thanked those present for their comradeship for the time he has been in Wagga. Jean Purvis raised the question as to the future of the Wagga Branch Secretary with the knowledge that Pat Combs wished to step down from the role. It was indicated that Mary Smith was interested in taking on the position and to this end Lesley Grauer nominated Mary Smith for the Position of Wagga Branch Secretary and this was seconded by Lorraine Lawrence. Mary accepted the nomination with the approval of all those present. This will mean that Trevor Bates (President), Mary Smith (Secretary) and Elaine Scott (Treasurer) will be the only authorised signatories of the Wagga Branch financial affairs. It was noted from the floor that the Sydney Branch will be holding at Odyssey in West Wyalong on the 13th to 15th October. The Kids Convoy will be held on 23rd September leaving Bomen at 11:00am and finishing at Lake Albert Pat Combs (Retiring Secretary) P.J. 6 Leader 26 th July 2017 Not a lot has happened over the past week with rain wiping out the Wednesday ride of last week and no scheduled ride for last Sunday. While the day was rather cool the sun shone I am sure there would have been one or two who ventured out to find a coffee shop. However, the troops did meet up at Billy s on Saturday morning for a chat and to discuss the World s affairs with no solution to the fixing the problems, we will leave that to Turnbull and Co. On the 6 th August we meet up with Griffith and Albury/Wodonga for the annual feast at the Morundah Hotel. Cost of the Bistro style meal at Morundah will be $30 and will include Sweets and tea and coffee. Other drinks are available at the bar. On the 19 th of August, it s off to The Temora Aviation Museum where they will be having a fly day. This is always a good event and food and drink is no problem, being available on site. On Sunday 3 rd September the ride will take in Tumbarumba, Tooma, Corryong and Jingellic, returning home through Holbrook and Mangoplah Of course, weather permitting, there is always the Wednesday rides which leaves Billy s Café at 9:30 am. The destination for the day is discussed over a cup of coffee and the flip of a coin. Once again see if you can round up some new recruits to help bolster our ranks. Give us a call on or ring the National Office, in Narellan on or There are lots of good reasons to join and make like-minded friends all over Australia. Hopefully the weather will start to improve and we can start to enjoy some warm sunshine. For all your Barbecue, Picnic and Camping needs. plus a large range of wood fires Wagga Bike tyres Let Fred and his team put the rubber between you and the road. Tyres to suit all motorcycles - Sports - Off Road - Cruisers 6

7 Leader 2nd August 2017 It has been a quiet week, once again with the only activity being the Saturday morning Meet and Greet with 17 in attendance. Ross Woodbridge turned up in his left-hand drive 1960 s Chev Corvair (in immaculate condition) which got all the girls a bit giggly. Lorraine couldn t help herself and jumped in the driver s seat but couldn t find the get-up-and-go button. Just as well. Sunday was quite good weather wise and a few did go off into the sunshine rubbing a bit more tread off the tyres. It was nice to see a bit of decent rain on Monday and we hope it holds off for today s Wednesday ride and Sundays ride to Morundah where we meet up with others from the district for our annual feast. Cost of the meal will be $30 which includes sweets and tea or coffee. On the 19 th of August it s off to The Temora Aviation Museum where they will be having a fly day. This is always a good event and food and drink is no problem, being available on site. One event which is gaining a lot of interest is Woody s mid week overnighter to Albert which will leave Billy s at 9:30am on the 23rd August. Accommodation is at the Albert Hotel or you can take a swag if you are brave an slightly demented. For further info give Greg call on On Sunday 3 rd September the ride will take in Tumbarumba, Tooma, Corryong and Jingellic, returning home through Holbrook and Mangoplah. Then there is the Tri Branch weekend at Jerilderie on September 8/9/10. Remember that all rides start at 9:30am. That will change on the 1st September. Indian Motorcycle is thrilled to announce the launch of the 1 in 50 Competition. If you book a Weekend Escape on any Indian motorcycle from the 1st July, 2017 until 30th September 2017, and buy a bike from either our Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne or Perth Dealership, you have a 1 in 50 chance of winning back the cost of your new ride. The Editor of the Riding On is always on the lookout for photos including captions these can be individual or branch related activities; rides or celebrations as well as interesting stories to share with the general membership please to ridingon@ulysses.org.au With the deadline for submissions of ride reports, stories and photos for the Riding On, approaching, please take the time to tell us what's been happening in your Branch, on the really good ride you did, or your new bike. 8 Leader August 9 th 2017 Just three of our crew took to the roads last week and took the old favourite track to Gundagai through Wantabadgery and from Gundagai it was up to Jugiong, then across to Harden and from Harden to Young where they propped for lunch. With lunch out of the way the trio motored over to Temora via Bribbaree and from there it was a leisurely trip back home. It was a nice dry sunny day, and all over by about 2:00pm. Saturday saw only about ten drop in for a chat at Billy s and I can understand why most people stayed home, it was freezing cold even in the warm spots. However those who did turn up had a pleasant hour or so relating tales tall and true over a nice hot drink and a late breakfast. Our annual trek to Morundah Pub with Griffith and Albury/Wodonga was a great day out with 30 odd in attendance. As usual mien host put on a great spread and I did note quite a few backing up for seconds. The day started out to be all blue and sunny but by about 1:00pm that had all turned to crud and those who rode their bikes ended up with a wet bum and no fish. I suppose the transport arrangements for the day were bikes and cars about 50/50. Mick Ellis excelled himself with a bit of help from Mutton Chops, they found a nice dirt road out of Boree Creek and took this attractive short cut to the target. Well the nice dirt road turned out to be a quagmire and after Mick had been dumped a couple of times his bike and his self were covered in mud to the point where they had removed a large quantity of road surface. We held a raffle and raised $94 profit which will go to the Ulysses charity UCARF which does research into Arthritis. The Central Victorian Ulysses Branch is holding their Annual Golden Dragon Rally on September 29 th until 1 st October at Tarnagulla. There will be lots on offer to see and do with an entry fee of $15. If you are half interested in going give Reg ( ) or Ian ( ) a call. Tarnagulla is about 37 kilometres west of Bendigo and there are a multitude of different ways of getting there. Our next adventure is to the Temora Aviation Museum on August the 19 th so please note that this is a Saturday instead of our usual Sunday day out. The Museum will be conducting a flying day and it promises to be a great day out. Food and drinks are available on site or if you want you can slip up town and have a counter lunch. On Wednesday 23 rd of August Woody is hosting a ride to Albert (up Tottenham way) for an overnight stay. The ride will leave at the usual time (9:30am) and return the following day. On September 3 rd the ride will be up in the hills taking in Tumbarumba, Corryong, Tooma, Jingellic and all points on the way there and on the way back. Also note that from this date all rides will depart at 9:00am. The next big event will be the Tri-Branch weekend at Jerilderie in September (8 th 9 th and 10 th ) and if you want to get in early to book in at the Caravan Park/Motel ring on So there we have it and hopefully the rain will go away and come again another day. Having trouble getting started? See Roy or Paul. They will 8

9 Leader August 16 th 2017 You have seen us riding out on the road wearing our Old Man Logo having a great time with our friends, growing old disgracefully! I guess you have wondered who we are and what we represent? This great club - the Ulysses Club - was formed in December 1983, from a meeting of five people at the Elizabeth Hotel in Sydney. Stephen Dearnley, who was known fondly as Old Number 1, was one of those five members, and with others, they adopted a draught constitution and laid down three basic purposes of the Club, which are: 1. To provide ways in which older motorcyclists can get together for companionship and Mutual support. 2. To show by example that motorcycling can be an enjoyable and practical activity for riders of all ages. 3. To draw the attention of public and private institutions to the needs and views of older riders. The Ulysses Club is not so much a motorcycle club, but a social club for older motorcyclists. With around paid up members, branches in every state and territory, and clubs overseas, we have come a long way since those early days. Our annual general meeting is held in a different place each year, with the week prior to the AGM itself being an event filled week for Ulysses Club members who either camp on site or stay in Motel or private accommodation in the town. Our logo is a representation of an old man and our logo is Growing old disgracefully. As a junior member at 40 (the youngest age at which you may join), and with plenty of rides, social events, more rides, rallies and Odysseys to attend what other reason do you need to join? To get the good oil contact the administration office on or administration@ulysses.org.au. Or join online at We only had one contender for a ride last Wednesday and that was Gerhard who rode in from Ladysmith. He had a mug of coffee and turned around and rode home again on his trusty Beemer. No one else was game to venture out. Saturday saw a good gathering of the clans at Billy s for Meet and Greet but some clown saw fit to gather outside on the footpath lounge, believing that it was warm. Well it wasn t. It was bleeding cold. Our next adventure is to the Temora Aircraft Museum this coming Saturday 19th. Leave from McDonalds Car Park at 9:30am and off we go for a good day out in the sun hopefully. And on the Sunday 3rd September we head off into the hills Tumbarumba and Corryong way.. See you on the road. 9
