1 August 2006 A Guide to Resources and Services For management and stewardship of the Russian River Watershed Russian River & Big Sulphur Creek at Cloverdale, CA. Photo By Robert Janover This project is a result of a collaborative effort between the Russian River Watershed Council, Sotoyome Resource Conservation District, and the US Army Corps of Engineers. Production of the directory was made possible through funding from the US Army Corps of Engineers. In addition to this version of the directory, you can find updated versions online at Russian River Watershed Directory version August

2 Preface The Sotoyome Resource Conservation District (SRCD) has assembled this 2006 directory for landowners, professionals, educators, organizations, governmental agencies, and individuals interested in natural resource management and stewardship. In 1997, The SRCD compiled the first known resource directory of agencies and organization working in the Russian River Watershed. The directory was an example of an emerging Coordinated Resource Management and Planning (CRMP) effort to encourage community-based solutions for natural resource management. The California Association of Resource Conservation Districts is a lead sponsor of the CRMP approach. In 2004, The Army Corps of Engineers, working as a fiscal sponsor to the Russian River Watershed Council, approached the SRCD to request a similar directory, adding a database format that would support the publication s printed appearance. The directory aims to simplify what has become an increasing complex world of resources and services. No doubt, some organizations and entities have been overlooked, not by intention, but rather by the complexity of bringing together a diverse array of information. 5 About the Russian River Watershed The Russian River Watershed encompasses a 1485 square miles drainage area in Mendocino and Sonoma counties and is bounded by the Coast Range on both the east and west. The mainstem is about 110 miles long; originating in central Mendocino County, approximately 15 miles north of Ukiah in Redwood and Potter Valley, it flows generally southeastward to its confluence with Mark West Creek, where it makes a sharp turn to the west cutting across the Coast Range and emptying into the Pacific Ocean at Jenner. Two major reservoirs in the Russian River Watershed provide flood protection, water supply storage and recreation: Coyote Dam and Warm Springs Dam. Coyote Dam located on the East Fork of the Russian River near Ukiah, created Lake Mendocino and Warm Springs Dam located on Dry Creek west of Healdsburg, created Lake Sonoma. A diversion from the Eel River through the Potter Valley powerhouse flows into the East Fork and Lake Mendocino. The Russian River is a primary source of drinking water for over half a million people in Mendocino, Sonoma and Marin counties, irrigation water for agriculture, wildlife & waterfowl habitat, recreational tourism, and until recently, a world renowned salmonid fishery. The watershed supports a wide variety of land uses; the predominant land use in the basin is agriculture. The primary agricultural use of the land is vineyards, however there is some land used for dairy pasturelands, small crop farming and orchards. Other land uses include; rural residential and urban development, gravel mining, small areas of timber production, some cattle and horse rangeland, geothermal power production, various light industrial uses, sport fishery and recreational tourism. Approximately 95% of the Russian River Watershed is in private ownership. The Russian River historically provided a highly prized anadromous fishery that ranked only behind the larger Klamath, Eel and Sacramento Rivers systems in abundance. Anadromous salmonid species identified (both historic and present) in the Russian River system include: Chinook salmon, Coho salmon, Steelhead trout, and Pink salmon. The river's anadromous fisheries populations are now in drastic decline, with the disappearance of pink salmon and the remaining species are federally listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act.
