Oregon Streamer Oregon Unit #090 Volume 53, Issue 4 June, 2012 Editor: Terri Warren Find us on the web at In accepting the role of President of the Oregon Unit of the WBCCI, I m honored to continue the example of leadership shown by our previous Past-Presidents: Mike Rogers. for stepping forward five years ago to re-energize this Club; Teresa Taylor for her strategic & creative thinking and for allowing me to grow & thrive, and Susan Taylor, for her calm and supportive leadership that I know she ll bring to her new position as Membership Chair. I m excited for the coming year with our newly installed First & Second VP s, Patricia Scoggins and Terri Warren and Board members - Dave Pass and Mike Rogers. I would like to extend a huge thank you to Terri Warren for producing this newsletter -she s created a way to introduce us to new members; continues to evolve the content to make the newsletter informative and engaging, and her rally recaps are like a window into the world of the Oregon Unit, where fun, laughter and adventure are clearly evident. We re finalizing our 2013 rally schedule and will have everything you need to plan your 2013 Airstream adventures in the January issue. Let me give you a little insight into my unwavering commitment to the WBCCI, and love of the Oregon Unit. Contrary to popular belief, Doug and I haven t always owned Airstream trailers. Our first vintage trailer was an absolutely darling 1962 Shasta and it s with that trailer that we met dear friends Gerry & Susan Measures and Brad & Susan Taylor. We immediately joined the Oregon Unit after buying our flood-damaged 69 Tradewind and met another amazing person Dusty Janes, who was the Membership Chair at the time. We came to breakfasts, dropped by rallies for the day and spent 2.5 years renovating our beloved Airstream. The first person in the Club to see our completed Airstream was the person from whom we most wanted approval, and the one person we were the most concerned would say that our design direction was not in the spirit of the WBCCI. That person was Dusty, who brought tears to my eyes as he walked
through our trailer, who embraced our vision unconditionally and who will always have a special place in my heart. It s that spirit of acceptance, welcome and complete absence of judgment that is the heart & soul of the Oregon Unit and is why I m so passionate that we continue to nurture, support and preserve this Club. This is a very special collection of individuals who rejoice in each other s accomplishments, who selflessly offer their time and support, who show kindness and compassion in times of personal loss and who truly love the Airstream lifestyle. I think Wally would approve. Hope to see some of you at our Holiday Open House (details in this issue) or at our monthly breakfast gatherings. Wishing all of you happiness, good health and a beautiful holiday season filled with friends and loved ones. Safe travels,! Mona Heath Champoeg Rally in October Was a Huge Hit! Our fall rally at Champoeg State Park was the biggest of the rally season and so much fun. Scott McCollister and Cyle Frutchey did such a fabulous job of capturing the whole autumn feeling. The decorations were professional quality, beautifully done and just over the top wonderful! There is something so cozy about settling into that meeting hall with the woodstove going and food and friends arriving, it just can t be beat. With the exception of our Canadian attendee Debra McGill getting drenched with water down her back, I would describe it as an unqualified success. Here s what Scott and Cyle had to say about the weekend: This was the second year that the Oregon unit held the Fall rally at the always enchanting Champoeg State Park. Forty six trailers and nearly 100 attendees made this one of the largest rallies of the year. While the official rally schedule was Friday to Sunday, there were a number of attendees that arrived on Thursday. In addition to the beautiful fall scenery, Champoeg also has a great meeting hall which was adorned with seasonal decorations coordinated by Cyle. Saturday s schedule included a bike ride led by Julius Scoggins and a tour of nearby farms and wineries, led by Kathy Ellis-Kelemen. In the afternoon the Oregon unit held an election meeting and installation ceremony of our new officers. Saturday evening was capped off by a BBQ dinner of pulledpork, mac-n-cheese and baked beans finished off with pumpkin pie. We would like to thank all of the rally volunteers that made this event possible too many to mention here but you know who you are! Thanks to Paul Buescher, Bill Leppo and Laura Domela for the great photos of Champoeg that you see below.

The whole crew and Sam and Dusty the dogs thrown in for good measure. A Warm Oregon Airstream Club Welcome to... John and Jacki Ohman We are new Airstream owners and previous owners of a motor home. Both John and I have done a lot of camping with friends, both together and separately. I have been the most recent camper. In company with my "horsey" friends I have hauled my horse trailer to many places in Oregon for trail riding adventures. Most of the time I slept in a tent. John's interest in sleeping in a tent didn't survive a stint in the service. So I was without my best friend for these trips. The Airstream will replace our "camping" need in a more comfortable way. And we can enjoy it together. Now that we have our Airstream, John and I intend to take a few short trips... 2 or 3 days at a time around Oregon (in the rain) and then, once our training wheels are off, for 2 or 3 weeks at a time to places where the sun is shining a little more. Sometime in early 2013 we are taking off on a big, ambitious loop trip. We will start south, visiting friends and family and seeing the sights in and on the way to Arizona, Texas, Florida, the East Coast, and Ohio. Whew! That is assuming we don't kill one another first while living in a 28 foot silver tube. We will be back in Oregon at least in time for our big family barbecue on Fathers Day. Or sooner if at any point we decide it's time to come home.
Dress up your trailers and come on down! This year we ll be co-hosting an Airstream Holiday Open House with Airstream Adventures NW on December 7th and 8th. We are inviting the public to come tour our iconic beauties, vintage and new, original and renovated, and ask for donations of canned and non-perishable food items to be donated to the Oregon Food Bank. Good items to donate include canned meats and fish, chili, beans and any high protein food. Stopping by Costco soon? Can you please pick up something extra for this event? We ll decorate our beauties for the holidays...sparkly lights, aluminum trees, holiday flamingos, twinkling menorahs, and maybe even a blow up Santa Airstream or two, then watch with delight as the public steps into an aluminum wonderland. Even more fulfilling is the opportunity to provide much needed food for the holidays. Shop your local store and fill up on items for the Oregon food bank so more families can have a happy holiday meal. Our friends and partners at Airstream Adventures NW have graciously agreed to host the Open House on their property located at SE McLoughlin Blvd, Gladstone, OR. They re going to clear space on their inventory lot for us to camp and celebrate the holidays, and have also offered to provide light snacks for a Private Event on Friday, December 7th for members of our Club as well as friends & family members of their employees (attachment labeled Private Event). They will also provide the ability to daisy chain 110v power to all Airstreams on display and their decorations, daisy-chain water for the trailers and they will provide a place to park the tow vehicles. On Saturday evening we ll open the doors to the public. Airstream Adventures NW has hired a new marketing person named Chris Durkin who will be actively marketing the Saturday event please feel free to share the Private Event flier with others to help make this an awesome event in the spirit of the Oregon Unit of the WBCCI. Friday December 7th: Airstream Adventures NW after 12:00 pm Private Open House & celebration for members of the OR Unit and friends & family of Airstream Adventures NW 7:00 10:00 pm. We know how to make people feel welcome. Airstream Adventures NW will provide finger food, yum, can t wait Saturday December 8th: Additional arrivals prior to 3:00 pm. 10 The Latest Rally News for 2013 Are you already thinking about next years rallies? Me too. Are you curious about where we will be going? Some of it you ll find out now and one place is a secret. But we still have three time slots that need filling for next year. Would you be willing to consider hosting? If yes, those of us that have done it before will be happy to help you with practical tips, stuff you can really use to pull it off. And remember - you can co-host with someone you know, you can make it all potluck and just reserve the campsites, you can cook your heart out, or you can let us know you would like to host but don t have a co-host and would like us to hook you up with one who has experience, whatever works best for you. You can decide on a state campground, a county park, a commercial campground, or even a dry camping forest service campground. Your call! Let your creative juices flow. Here s what we have so far, and thanks to everyone who has agreed to host for next year: Mar at the Timberlake Campground, Home Valley, WA, across from Cascade Locks hosted by Mona & Doug Heath Apr at the River Bend RV Resort, Harrisburg OR hosted by Mary Kay & Jim Bash / Rob & Diane Nicols May Rally host and location needed Jun 7-10 at the Tri-Cities Bluegrass Festival hosted by Teresa & Glenn Taylor Jun 28 - Jul 4 is the International Rally in Huron SD Jul is the Kayak Rally in Scappose, OR no-host but organized by Brad and Susan Taylor July 18-21st Rally host and location needed Jul 31 - Aug 4 is the Mystery Rally and only 15 sites are available. hosted by Hal Hendrix, Terri Warren, Patricia and Julius Scoggins Aug 9-11 is the Mt. St. Helens rally, Sequest State Park, WA and only 15 sites are available hosted by Bob and Diane Nichol Aug 7-11 is the Potlatch Rally in Lacey WA hosted by the Washington Unit Aug Rally host and location needed Sep 9-15 is the Pendleton Roundup/National Rally hosted by Mona & Doug Heath Oct is the Champoeg Fall Rally/Annual Meeting hosted by Tony & Linda Starbird The entire January issue of the newsletter will be devoted to the upcoming rallies. If 2012 was any indicator, the rallies will fill up fast and some, we know, have only a small number of spaces available. So look at your calendars and get ready to receive those coupons that let you sign up in January.
Recipes for the Airstream Are you on the road this Thanksgiving in your trailer or think you might be in the future? Just want to cook a turkey at home? This recipe works for a turkey that is about pounds in size. Brining a turkey adds incredible moistness and additional tenderness to any fine bird. We try to buy birds that are raised locally to help keep our world sustainable and healthy, but I m sure this would work on any bird you might purchase. Brine 2 gallons of water 1 1/4 cup canning salt or kosher salt. Do NOT use table salt because it is way more salty. 3 T minced garlic a few springs of rosemary 1 T black pepper 1/4 cup Worchestershire sauce 1/3 cup brown sugar Mix all of the ingredients above together in a big plastic bag. This could be a zip lock bag or a garbage bag or a purchased brining bag. Put in the turkey. You need to be certain the turkey cavity is full of brine or it will float a lot. Try to get the air out of the bag. This helps with floating, too. Put the turkey in the bag in the refrigerator or in a cooler with ice packed around it. Leave it there for two days, refreshing with ice as needed. When you are finished brining, rinse the turkey inside and out with cool water. Important step. Then: 2 T poultry seasoning 1 T paprika 1 T seasoned salt 2 t. garlic powder 1 t. pepper 3/4 t. nutmeg 1 large onion, cut in wedges 3 lemons, cut in wedges 6 bay leaves 1 T. vegetable oil Turkey Rub Place the oven rack in it s lowest position. Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Place roasting rack in shallow roasting pan. Mix poultry seasoning, paprika, seasoned salt, garlic powder, pepper and nutmeg in small bowl. Rinse turkey; pat dry. Place turkey, breast-side up, in prepared pan. Sprinkle about half of the seasoning mixture inside of turkey. Then stuff the cavity with onion, lemon and bay leaves. Brush turkey breast with oil. Spread remaining seasoning mixture over entire surface and tuck some under the skin of turkey. Add 1/2 cup water to pan. Cover turkey loosely with foil. Roast 1 hour. Remove foil. Roast 2 to 2 1/2 hours longer or until internal temperature reaches 165 degrees, basting occasionally with pan juices. Remove turkey from oven. Let stand 20 minutes. Transfer to platter or carving board to slice. Reserve pan juices to make gravy or to serve with turkey.
