2 Roanoke Beacon Wednesday, April 23, 2014 Living History Turning back the hands of time for a special weekend Long before historical reenactments were considered cool, the Battle of Plymouth Living History Weekend was helping set the standard for Living History events which have now become the in thing. With the advent in 2011 of the Civil War Sesquicentennial Commemoration, the stage was set for a major resurgence of interest in history, genealogy and all things old. All of a sudden, we have an unprecedented opportunity to tell the rest of the story and give long-overdue recognition to obscure heroes and heroines of long ago. The Washington County Historical Society has always been diligent in its efforts to emphasize that Living History is much more than a battle reenactment, the organizers decided it was a good time to deviate from the usual course and tell some stories that had not really been unearthed before. For instance, the Saturday night Torchlight Tour has become legendary in its creativity and realism, immersing participants in scenes and situations which would have likely been encountered in Plymouth that fateful weekend in April Ladies such as Ann Latham Boyd Bowen and Margaret Leonard will be remembered in Tour scenes which will depict their unique contributions to their respective causes and the historic legacy they left behind. Tour times are assigned, and advance reservations are encouraged. Once again, illuminating the memorial initiative will be the Field of Honor, which was established in 2010 to honor all of the casualties of the War Between the States. In all, there were approximately 2500 killed, wounded or captured just at the Battle of Plymouth. Featuring 500 luminaries the first year, the goal is to increase to 2500 by the 150th anniversary event in The response to the first Field of Honor was so positive; it has been decided to open up the memorial luminaries to honor any casualty of the Civil War, not just those in Plymouth. Luminaries are available to be sponsored for $5 each, and will be illuminated on Saturday night during the Torchlight Tour, and will be featured as a poignant and dramatic scene on the Tour, focusing on the solemn reality of the passion, dedication and honor with which those who served willingly sacrificed everything for the cause they believed in. The Field of Honor will be located on the waterfront, at the Roanoke River Lighthouse. Plans call for having it open for visitors to Living History during the day on Saturday as well, so they may walk through and consider the sacrifices made by so many on both sides of the conflict. This location will also host the Sunday morning memorial service for descendents and others wishing to pay their respects. History will be on the move as Chaz the Great roams the camp, performing feats of prestidigitation that will astound the mind and delight the senses. Raise your eye to the sky for the Balloon Coprs and open your ears for the traveling minstrels throughout the day Saturday. Also, be sure check out the descendant s registry at the Old Soldier s Bureau, where visitors can learn more about their Civil War heritage. No Civil War weekend is complete without something special for the ladies, especially the Make a Memory Tea Party on Saturday afternoon. The Tea Party is a popular themed tea, held in a historical setting; this year it will be in the storefront at 111 W. Water Street. However, it has been sold out for this year. Last, but certainly not least, the excitement of the encampment and battle reenactments should not be missed. The Port o Plymouth Museum will host booksignings, and has new displays for the 150th commemoration of the Battle of Plymouth. Plymouth also has established a reputation of staging a first-class Civil War encampment, complete with artillery drills, sutlers, artisans, authors, craftspeople, food and demonstrations. Visit the replica CSS Albemarle ironclad ram, and watch the exciting naval battle on the Roanoke River. The Museum is dedicated to preserving, protecting and promoting our incredibly rich history, but the task is impossible without participation, appreciation and support from the local area residents. Historical Society Completes Improvements to Museum, Fort Site By Kim McCray Curator, Port o Plymouth Museum The 150th only comes once. In the 15 months that I have been working at the Port o Plymouth Museum, rarely has a Washington County Historical Society meeting adjourned before someone has uttered that gentle but firm reminder of the task at hand. A short yet powerful sentence, the phrase has served as a constant source of motivation and justification for many of the priorities set by the Washington County Historical Society in the last year. Armed with big dreams of how to make our special Sesquicentennial anniversary a year of enhancements and celebration, we have supplemented our Living History Weekend events with several other more permanent projects. Now, less than four months into the year, several of those dreams have become a reality. In addition to expanding and improving our annual Living History Weekend schedule of events, one of the main ways that the Historical Society has chosen to live out our the 150th only comes once mantra is to enhance two of our properties: the Port o Plymouth Museum and the Fort Compher site. Beginning April 25th, visitors to the Port o Plymouth Museum will be able to enjoy several new and improved exhibits and displays. Created specifically in recognition of the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Plymouth, a temporary display, Pieces of a Cornfield Ironclad, will be in place through Including two original artifacts from the CSS Albemarle as well as a fullsized replica of the ironclad s original smokestack, the display chronicles the journeys that all three pieces have made from the 1860s to the present. Our main exhibit, The Battle of Plymouth and Beyond also has been enhanced to allow for a more self-guided experience. Brand new panels recount some of the most significant episodes in Plymouth s Civil War history. Featuring the lifespan of the CSS Albemarle as the central timeline of the story, the exhibit begins with the ironclad s construction, continues through an accounting of her participation at the Battle of Plymouth, and concludes with her sinking. The main exhibit hall also includes a brand new display case that houses not only a Civil War flag captured during the Battle of Plymouth, but a large display of more than 45 locally-found artillery pieces, one of the largest of such collections in the Carolinas. Other new museum displays include: Digging and Diving for the Past, Faces from the Front, Art of the Albemarle, & Washington County Rails: A Railroad History. In addition to the monument, the fort site also includes a newly-recreated fortification that allows visitors to visualize the dimensions of the original fort. This historical accuracy of this year s Living History Weekend Sunday battle reenactment will no doubt greatly be enhanced in terms of historical accuracy due to the fort s addition. Soon a third new element will be in place at the fort site as well a Civil War trails marker.
