This region is home to one of the oldest tribes in Africa, the Maasai. However, Tanzania s lack of education, high unemployment rate and extreme poverty has left them under threat. Together with African Impact s team on the ground, you will work with members of this iconic tribe, supporting those who have had little to no education as a child. Through Kiswahili literacy and English language tuition, you will help this friendly community access their limitless potential, and more importantly, help provide them with the skills they need to gain work in the booming tourism industry. Our projects take a holistic approach to education. With strong relationships as the foundation point of all we do, all our projects are designed to address the key needs the community themselves have identified. We work with all demographics within the community, from teenagers and adults, to single mothers, widows and people with disabilities.

3 Many Maasai children don t have the opportunity to attend school because families place importance on herding cattle as a traditional way of life. This means that many Maasai adults are illiterate and you will help overcome this challenge by teaching Swahili literacy, as well as basic English. The impact of this program is immediate, and you will see an adult write or read for the first time in their life as a direct result of your hard work. After graduating from our Literacy Program, the students progress further to our Foundation English where you will teach students alphabet sounds, sentence structure and key vocabulary to develop their English skills and increase their chances of employment. The students move through each level ranging from basic English, to fluency and job readiness groups. When you are not working with members of the Maasai tribe, you ll get to accompany other volunteers who are working on similar projects to yours. This could involve spending an afternoon at Girl s or Boy s Club, visiting the Old People s Home, or depending on the time of the year being involved with an award-winning NGO (NAGEM) that aims to end the harmful practice of FGM. Travel to the home of our Maasai students and come face-to-face with the reality of what living in a rural Maasai village is like.
