2 WHERE ARE YOU GOING? TANZANIA Discover the breathtaking beauty of East Africa as you explore some of the region s most iconic scenery and wildlife. You will be awestruck by the nation s rich diversity- home to over 120 ethnic groups. Meet the legendary Massai people as you trek through the African bush with Kilimanjaro looming above the savannah. No African adventure is complete without a thrilling safari; so head to Tarangire National Park- home to the famous big 5. Tanzania is the Africa of your imagination and so much more! The purpose of this brief is to introduce your expedition opportunity. It will give you a feel for the destination and the type of activities that you will be involved in. We hope this brief snapshot will leave you feeling inspired and wanting more! CULTURE SHOCK: A definite difference to what you are used to! ALTITUDE: The team may trek above 2650m for periods. VISA: Required for British nationals* * Please note requirements may change DESTINATION FACTS RELIGION/S: Tribal Animist, Islam & Christianity. CULTURAL OR HISTORICAL INTEREST: Tanzania is home to over 150 ethnic groups (Sukuma, Nyamwezi, Hehe and Bena, Gogo, Haya, being some of the largest). LANGUAGES: Swahili, English and many tribal dialects. GEOGRAPHY: Lowland savannah/grasslands punctured with glaciated mountains including Kilimanjaro (5895m). CLIMATE: Coast - hot and humid. Inland - hot at low altitude but cooler and milder the higher the altitude.

3 WHAT IS AN? Expeditions are a life-changing experience, a chance for young people to go on a fun and educational journey with their friends. Most expedition destinations are in developing countries, allowing students to not only experience stunning parts of the world but also witness a very different way of life, often with the chance to immerse themselves in the culture through project work. HOW IT WORKS... EXPEDITION TIMELINE EXPEDITION LAUNCH ITINERARY DEVELOPMENT FUNDRAISING LEADER MEETING EXPEDITION TRAINING FINAL PREPARATION FUNDRAISING Our expeditions are made up of four main phases; acclimatisation, trekking, project and rest & relaxation. During the build-up we put students in the driving seat, allowing them to finalise their itinerary alongside our experts. Acclimatisation Arrive in country and spend some time getting used to the new culture whilst planning your next phase and changing currency. Trekking You may take part in a trek doing either a cultural trek through villages or an attempt to summit a nearby mountain! Project Dedicate some time to helping on a project - either community or environmental based, often working with local people. R&R Enjoy some R&R! This could involve a few days on a beautiful beach, reflecting on your expedition or an adrenaline adventure.

4 EXAMPLE ITINERARY The below itinerary has been created by our Destination Managers as an example of what you may choose to do on expedition. DAY 1-2 DAY 3 DAY 4-6 DAY 7-12 DAY 13 DAY DAY DAY Depart the UK and arrive at Tanzania s Kilimanjaro International Airport. Travel to Arusha and settle into your pre-booked accommodation. Spend the day confirming itinerary phases. Practice speaking Kiswahili whilst experiencing the sights, smells and sounds of the local markets. Travel to the Maasai village of Longido and experience walking through the African bush with local Maasai guides. Reach the summit of Mount Longido and descend to spend time in a Maasai Boma or at a traditional market and learn more about these fascinating people. Return to Arusha. Travel to your project where you will spend the next six days working to improve the local kindergarten as well as helping to plan some activities/lessons/games for the local children. Next head to the stunning Usambara Mountains and look forward to your second trek, which starts the following day. Your four day trek will take you to the Mazumbai Forest, a beautiful area in the Usambara Mountains. The route will take you through villages, tea plantations and agricultural land, as well as through the rainforest offering a fantastic chance to observe some local wildlife. Make your way to Tarangire National Park and prepare for your African safari experience in one of Tanzania s most famous wildlife havens! Return to Arusha following your safari to celebrate the end of your successful expedition and reflect on all the amazing adventures you had. Depart Tanzania and arrive in the UK to be reunited with family and friends. Due to the changing nature of the world over the build up period, Outlook may be required to change aspects of, or the order of the itinerary. Outlook will consult with the Link Teacher/Group Leader and all participants if this is the case.

5 ADVENTURE At the Itinerary Development Day, with guidance from one of our destination experts, the team will be able to choose from options to finalise their itinerary. The choices may include the project they work with, the challenge level and type of trek and where they go for some rest and relaxation! Travel from Arusha to Longido to experience walking through the beautiful African bush, to the summit of Mount Longido (2690m). Rising triumphantly out of the plains, you will make your way through the cloudforest and onto buffalo trails, through drier montane forest and scrub before reaching the summit. Return to a rural community and stay in a Maasai Boma, where you will learn all about these amazing people. Your second trek will take you to the Mazumbai Forest, a beautiful area located in the Usambara Mountains. Your route will take you through villages and agricultural land as well as through the rainforest offering a fantastic chance to observe the nature; from numerous bird species to black and white Columbus monkeys. PROJECT To truly understand this beautiful and complex country - immerse yourself in its culture by contributing to a community project. You will be working with a local children s trust in the small rural community of Ndatu, just outside Arusha on the flanks of Mount Meru. The community came up with the idea of starting a kindergarten for Ndatu and the surrounding villages as there was no pre-primary education in the area. It opened in 2005 with just five students and now has over 70! During your project phase you will be camping in the village and preparing your own meals. Your work at the kindergarten will involve helping with building/renovation work, putting up fencing or planting trees. Throughout the project there will be a chance to help in the kindergarten and also organise games and activities for the children. This is a fantastic way to learn about a way of life so very different from your own whilst giving something back to this amazing country. This fantastically varied trek will not only give you a fantastic experience of the incredible landscape but also an insight into the culture of the country. You will be camping, staying in basic guest houses or in homestays and preparing your own meals throughout. Going on safari is without doubt one of the highlights of any African adventure! Tarangire National Park, which lies two hours north of Arusha, is a haven for wildlife including elephant, impala, lion, antelope and many different species of bird. You will embark on a drive safari through the heart of the park. With expert knowledge from your Tanzanian guide, you will be taken to the best spots to see wildlife whilst learning all about their habitats and way of life in this beautiful yet tough environment.

(All participants based in England and Wales receive 10% discount at Nomad Travel). Visas and passports please refer to page 3 to see if a visa is required. Personal belongings insurance (this may be covered by your household / contents insurance). Loss of passport. Cancellation insurance (contact our Customer Service Team for more information).
