Is summer here or what? We ve had our share of hot days. Last month and the beginning of this month were very busy for us. We had a great time at Wing Ding in Des Moines and saw lot s of our friends. The local residents welcomed us with open arms and were very friendly. You missed a good time if you didn t attend. Pat got lucky with a Royal straight flush Ace high and tied with a member from Canada in the poker run. He lost in the tie breaker so got second place and $ We d like to thank all the VA members who helped out at the Registration table on Friday and some even on Saturday. The volunteer workers were Ted & Ethel Nelmes, Cynthia & Mike Travers, Dan & Becky Wolverton, Don Riffey, Steve Butland, John Howe, Claire Miller, Rick Baker, Wil Bell, Bill & Susan Rodgers, Dave Huey, Pat & Kathy Hasiak. Winners of the two $50.00 drawings were Claire Miller & Rick Baker. The good news for those who don t want to travel a long way is that Wing Ding 33 will be held in Knoxville, TN. It should be at the same site Honda Hoot was the last several years in Chilhowie Park. Get your registration in early to assure getting a room. Talking about Wing Ding reminds us of our own Rally in the Valley in Salem. The flyer was sent to all CD s and staff and should also be posted on our web site. We are looking forward to another great time and hope you all can join us in showing our neighbor Districts how we throw a party. The theme is Wingin Across the USA so if you like some culture from another part of the country or what it s famous for, or attractions it has you can come as something from that area. We will have a procession of flags from all the states at opening ceremonies and are looking for volunteers from each state to carry their flag. These are all small parade type flags (about 4x6 inches) and you get to keep the flag. Please let Kathy know if you are interested so see can keep a list. Her is gemrubykat@comcast.net. They will be first come first served. The winner of the RTIV logo contest is Kathy Skinner, VA-L. When you see her be sure to congratulate her on a great design. She gets two free registrations, 2 T-shirts and $ Her winning logo will be posted on the web site soon. We have a lot of things to get ready before the RITV: Nominations for the Spirit of Virginia Award are due by 15 August 2010 to us. Information on the award and submission is on our website. Any VA GWRRA member can nominate someone for this award. Nominations for Educator of the Year are due by 15 August to Jim Sharkey. RITV ads are due by 25 September to us. They should be in electronic format as well as a hard copy. A copy of the ad form is on the web site and also attached to this newsletter. Chapters get a discount on full page ads so get your ad together and welcome our guests. The All Chapters Picnic is also coming up soon in Buena Vista. 3 P A G E 3 Virginia District Couple of the Year Pat and Debbie Koehler VA District Couple Coordinators Fred and Mandy Mew South Central (Region H) International Couple of the Year Fred and Mandy Mew are the Region H Couple of the Year for They live in Euless, Texas which is located between Dallas and Forth Worth. In January, 2000, they surprised friends and family and eloped to be married on a beach in Hawaii. After that life-changing event, Mandy moved from North Carolina to Texas, and they settled in Euless newar the DFW airport. Fred is a Technical Crew Chief/Aircraft Maintenance Instructor, teaching Boeing 737, MD-8-, 757, 767, and 777 aircraft and safety for American Airlines. He has worked for a major airline for 24 years and is a graduate of Dallas Baptist University. Many is athe Budget Analyst for Hurst-Euless-Bedford Independent School District and has worked in Texas public schools for 10 years. Prior to moving to Texas she worked for the North Carolina State Department of Public Schools for 12 years. She is a graduate of Wake Forest University. Fred has been a member of GWRRA since 1998 and in 2001; they began riding with GWRRA Texas, Chapter R. Fred rides a white GL1800 and Mandy rides a blue GL1800. They have held numerous positions in GWRRA including Couple of the Year (Region H, Texas District, and Texas Chapter R), Assistant Texas District Directors, Chapter Directors, Assistant Chapter Directors, Chapter Educator, Chapter Newsletter Editor, and, most importantly, Texas Chapter R members. They are both Senior Master Tour Riders (level IVs). Fred is a Rider Education Seminar Instructor and both have taken numerous Leadership Training Courses. In addition to riding their wings, they enjoy scuba diving, traveling, cruises, music, movies, and meeting new friends with GWRRA.

4 P A G E 4 Virginia Education At It s Best Summer Time is HERE! And here with a vengeance! I never thought I would say this but I have not ridden into work the last couple of days because I didn t want to deal with the 100 degree weather we have been having. Usually it s the absence of heat and the presence of slick roads that keep me from riding into work. Normally I don t mind riding in the heat as I can stay relatively comfortable as long as I am moving. The problem up here in Northern Virginia is that traffic regularly backs up and sitting in the hot sun and on the hot pavement for extended periods of time can be very uncomfortable. When I get up in the morning I look outside to see if there is something that will keep me from riding that day (lately that has been the heat). I consider my Wing my primary means of transportation and my Pickup sits in the driveway. Why do I ride everyday you might ask? Well when I step back and consider that question I believe the main reason is I just love to ride. In addition to that there are some other benefits. I can save over $13.00 a day by riding (no parking or Metro fees). I can park my motorcycle at my place of employment for no charge. I can use the HOV lanes. The Wing gets around 40 MPG while my truck gets a whole lot less. Another very important item that I can save is my time. My morning commute by Wing is about 30 minutes, by truck/metro, its an hour or more. My evening commute by Wing is 30 to 45 minutes and by truck/metro its closer to an hour and a half or more. Ever year there is a Ride to Work Day. This year it was June 21 st. When I was on their website I found the below information and thought it was interesting and wanted to share it with you: This annual event is put on each year by Ride To Work Day, a non-profit 501 c(4) organization. Ride your motorcycle or scooter on this day to demonstrate: The number of motorcyclists to the general public and to politicians. That motorcyclists are from all occupations and all walks of life. That motorcyclists can reduce traffic and parking congestion in large cities. That motorcycles are for transportation as well as recreation. That motorcycling is a social good. Ride to Work Day puts out the following information about motorcycles and commuting. cont page 5

5 P A G E 5 Continued From Page 4 Rider Ed Con t NUMBER OF MOTORCYCLES COMMUTING Out of a total 129,141,982 commuters in this country (USA, 2003) 147,703 of them ride motorcycles to work regularly. That s only.11 percent. US Census Bureau Of all the motorcycles registered in the USA, (6,567,197) 4.3% of them are used for year-round primary transportation (282,389), with an additional 9.9% used seasonally for this purpose (932,542 total). Motorcycle Industry Council NUMBER OF MOTORCYCLES ON THE ROAD As of 2003, there were 5,370,000 motorcycles regularly in use in the United States. US Department of Transportation, Bureau of Transportation Statistics As of 2003, these 5,370,000 motorcycles traveled an average of 1,800 miles a year per motorcycle (9,539,000,000 total miles). US Department of Transportation, Bureau of Transportation Statistics TRAFFIC CONGESTION The average roadway delay per person in 2001 was 26 hours per year and in 2003 it was 47 hours per year, an increase of 81%. The average commute time one way is 25 minutes. Texas Transportation Institute JOURNEY TIMES The average United States driver travels 29 miles per day and is driving a total of 55 minutes per day. (This is an average vehicle speed of 32 mph.) US Department of Transportation, Bureau of Transportation Statistics Tests comparing car and motorcycle performance on real journeys suggest that traveling by motorcycle can shorten journey times by as much as 33 minutes of every hour for town centre and city travel, and 20 minutes of every hour for travel through a mixture of built-up and non built-up areas. Motorcycle Industry Association (UK) POTENTIAL AGGREGATE BENEFIT Motorcycles cover 1-2% of the total distance traveled by road, and cars cover 86%. If 2% of car commuters switched to motorcycles or scooters, the current level of motorcycle utility use would effectively double. This is divided into $3,665 for vehicle purchases, $1,235 for gas and oil and $2,471 for insurance and misc. RIDE TO WORK DAY FUEL SAVINGS (estimated) 150,000 motorcycles use 30,000 gallons per normal commuting day x 2 (an estimated 150,000 added motorcycles on Ride to Work Day) = 60,000 gallons used by motorcycles on Ride to Work Day. 60,000 gallons used on Ride to Work Day - 30,000 gallons used by motorcycles on a normal commuting day = 30,000 additional gallons used by motorcycles on Ride to Work Day. On Ride to Work Day, there are an estimated 150,000 additional Ride to Work Day commuting motorcycles and 150,000 less commuting car, light truck and SUV s. Continued On Page 6

Well, the statistics validate some of the reasons I ride and the icing on the cake it means I can help the environment by doing something I already love to do, a win-win situation. 7 P A G E 7 Leadership Training in Virginia The Leadership Road Ahead By Rick and Elsie Baker, Virginia Leadership Trainers Rick and Elsie Baker District Leadership Trainers Virginia is finishing its Officers Certification Programs (OCP) for 2010 the end of July. We'll offer more OCPs starting in January. And, remember, any member may register and take an OCP in any district. Please check the National GWRRA website for more classes in at the < regional/training/events.htm> Events webpage of the Leadership Training Program. But, have you heard about other Leadership seminars and programs? Let's take a look at what's coming up in Virginia! The next Leadership Instructor Program is 14 August, in Lynchburg, Virginia. Virginia really needs more Leadership Instructors! In fact, every chapter should have at least one Leadership Instructor, and every chapter ought to offer one or two mornings of leadership seminars each year. Leadership Instructors hone today's leaders' skills and help GWRRA grow leaders for tomorrow. You must register by 6 August. A minimum of five members are required to make this class a "GO." What you learn from the GWRRA Leadership Training Program (LTP) is equally useful in your place of business and in other recreational and volunteer activities too. Please plan to attend both RITV and Wingless Weekend and get the most out of your GWRRA membership by attending Leadership Seminars.

8 P A G E 8 Virginia Happenings Officer Certification Program: OCP It has been a long, long time since three letters have stirred up this much gossip. OCP, what is it, and why there is so much talk about it? The Officer Certification Program has been in development for a long time. It actually began way back in It is a culmination of many years of planning and development, created by many people. GWRRA Officers and Members alike ask why do we need to take this if we are volunteers? While there is no requirement for Members to take the program, everyone is encouraged to participate, so they may have a better understanding of the policies and procedures of the Association. As an Officer in GWRRA, there is a requirement to participate in the program, so that you may better serve the Members. GWRRA is probably one of the last Volunteer Organizations to implement required training for its leaders. Many of you are familiar with Ride for Kids. Anyone that heads up a RFK Event is required to participate in training. Additionally, anyone that volunteers to help at a ride also has to have training. If folks are not trained and provided with the information on how to perform a task and what is expected of them, cannot be expected to perform the task at hand. It only makes good sense. Many have made the statement that they have been an Officer before, or are currently an Officer and they are doing just fine. Although this may be true, the OCP will make your task easier. I have been involved in the OCP for a long time, and each time I teach a class, I learn a little something. Having served as an Operations Officer for many, many years, I can tell you I m glad I have been exposed to the OCP. Just as many take an ERC more than once (in fact many take them every other year) the OCP is an opportunity to hone your skills as an Officer in GWRRA. I made much mention of participation in the OCP. That is just what you do. Yes there are presenters that send a consistent message to all that take it, but you have the opportunity for interaction, questions and answers with the Instructors. We want to make sure everyone knows the material. As many have been left to read the Officer Guidebook, the OCP covers the policies and procedures of the Organization, so that everyone understands and interprets the material the same way. This leads to better understanding of GWRRA and fewer misunderstandings having to do with policy. For this reason, the Officer Guidebook is now the Officer Handbook. I don t want to divulge too much about the OCP, but I encourage everyone that is interested in GWRRA, either as a future Officer or just a concerned Member to participate in a class. 9 P A G E 9 Virginia Happenings con t Northern Area: With June being my first full month as the ADD for the Northern section of VA, it proved to be a very busy month. I was able to make it to three of our chapters, while working with those Chapters still needing to get the OCP training. At this point the North still has one chapter we will be putting the full court press on to get someone qualified. It is always good to visit with the chapters and see what they are doing to have FUN! While visiting with VA-A, I had the opportunity to swear Mary O Connor in as CD. That s right, after a short break; Mary has resumed duties as CD. Chapter A is in good hands. Congrats Mary looking forward to working with you as the new CD. Additionally, our District Directors drove up about the same time I did to attend VA-E s poker run. As always, Chapter E puts on a top quality event. Way to go Sly and Katina! Chapter P out of Charlottesville will be celebrating their 20 th anniversary. The CD s have sent invites out to all chapters. I am sure it will be a RIP ROARING good time. As we finish getting all CDs certified with OCP training, I encourage all CDs to look at getting the rest of their staff trained. You can consider that as the building block as you look to mentor your staff member as well as chapter members for new staff positions. I will be working to pay the rest of the Northern VA chapters a visit. In the meantime, if you have any questions, feel free to drop me a line or give me a call. As always ride long and ride safe. Ken Taylor Asst District Director North Mary O Connor takes Oath of Office assuming duties as Chapter A CD Western Area: Becoming the new Assistant District Directors West I'll start with a little into about us, Wayne and Kathy Whitworth (and son Jonathan) as the now former CDs of VA-K in Roanoke even tho we live in Bedford. Each of us are avid riders, my ride being a frost beige 1986 Aspencade 1200 SE-i (Special Edition fuel injection model), Kathy's a pearl green SE and Jonathan on his (Hokie) Maroon 1984 V30 Magna. Kathy and I re-met at our 15 th year class reunion and have been married for over 20 years. We have his, hers and ours that include 4 kids and 8 grandkids. Our love of the outdoors have us not only riding motorcycles but includes camping, hiking, fishing, etc. We love riding and hanging out on the Blue Ridge Parkway which is only about 15 miles from our home. Kathy absolutely loves riding her 1500 evident in riding on 16 Chapter rides last year besides many Ice Cream runs. Jonathan obtained his motorcycle learners at 15y6m has 16k miles in 18 months on his V30 and several hundred on my GoldWing. So it's safe to say we love riding.

10 P A G E 10 Virginia Happenings con t Continued From Page 10 Western Area Our GWRRA experience has been totally a family thing with Kathy and I being Chapter K Couple, VA-K ACDs and then CDs. All three of us have completed the Horizons Program, Officer Certification Program, are certified Road Captains and are Master Level IV riders. We've completed riding courses recently including ERC. I'm certificated as a Leadership Training Instructor and certified Bike Show Judge. Jonathan is involved with several Chapter websites and newsletters. We love attending GWRRA Rallies and other chapters gatherings not only in VA but neighboring states as well. After being presented our ADD patches in May, we drove down to VA-H Abingdon to present patches to new ACDs Karl & Shirley Hogston with 30 members present. We visited with VA-P as was DDs from NC promoting WOS. We went to VA-Vs Chick-n-Pickn event which was a blast as always! As well as VA-K activities in June we dropped by VA-M and enjoyed listening to stories of their ride to Niagara Falls. Then we headed to WVs District Rally in Summersville. They put on a really good show with Pirates, marbles and Ice Cream! As July started we rode to VA-X and was intrigued with their marble game. Next day at VA-R we met the COY from VA-W again. We have a good time at all the Chapters but R is extremely entertaining and worth a trip. We are looking forward to getting to know the Virginia District Staff along with all the Chapter Directors and know that we will enjoy working with them to serve the Virginia District. 11 P A G E 11 Virginia Happenings con t Virginia Chapter of the Year Program for 2010 Rick and Elsie Baker, VA Chapter of the Year Coordinators In June, we noted that Chapter Directors and the chapter team should NOW be taking a hard look at their chapter teams and programs for the remainder of 2010 to see if they might be eligible to qualify for the GWRRA Virginia District Chapter of the Year (CHOY) Award for calendar year And, we advised that, the chapter must meet the basic qualifications of the program to compete in This month, let s look at some of the fun things your chapter can do to put points on the CHOY scoreboard: Monthly Rides and Events Extraordinary Events Chapter Website Chapter Growth through New Members and by Retention of Current Members Member Participation in the Rider Ed Levels Program Chapter Participation in Official Parking Lot Practices CD and ACD Attendance of Leadership Seminars Chapter Attendance at Leadership Seminars Locally As you can see, these are the typical things Chapters ought to be doing all along for a full year. If your chapter meets the basic qualifications outlined in May, then just about everything the chapter does puts the chapter closer to the awards. 14 P A G E 14 Virginia Happenings con t VA-Y s Bill Miller, CAPTAIN, US Nav, Retired, Laid to Rest at Arlington National Cemetery, 18 August Please RSVP Bill Miller will be buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery on Wednesday, August 18 th, following a Mass of Christian Burial at the Old Post Fort Myer Chapel. All are invited to attend, and you do not need to be affiliated with the military to drive onto Fort Myer. However, it will be much easier if you RSVP so that your name can be given to the gate guards. This can definitely speed the process for everyone accessing the Post. You will be arriving during rush hour when it is always slower to get on Post. Details: Mass of Christian Burial at 8:45 am prompt. Please arrive at the Old Post Chapel, Building 335, NO LATER THAN 8:15 AM. You should be in seats by 8:30 AM. The Mass starts at 8:45 AM and will last no more than thirty minutes. After the Memorial Service, you may join the procession to the burial site in Arlington National Cemetery by vehicle or by foot. The procession will follow the horse-drawn cart with Bill's casket. The procession is approximately 3/4ths mile in length, and the pace is very slow. A reception following the gravesite service will be at the Ft. Myer Officers Club, Building 214 beginning approximately 10 AM. ALL attendees are invited. For ease in Post access, as well as, reception planning, please RSVP with the full names of all attending CAPTAIN William I. Miller s Service at Ft. Myer and the reception following at the Ft. Myer Officers Club on August 18th.,ALL drivers and passengers should be prepared to show a government issued identification card (Federal Government ID or State Issued ID or Driver s License) to enter Ft. Myer at either the Hatfield Gate or Wright Gate. Plan for at least 30 minutes to access the Post once arriving at the gate (rush hour). Motorcyclists are welcomed and definitely appreciated by the family. You are required to wear a helmet, jacket, long pants, gloves, and over the ankle shoes order to gain Post access if riding a motorcycle or trike. All water/electric/sewer sites, regardless of where they are located are $35 per night. When we are on the bike are fully aware of everything around us mainly because our life depends on it. But when we get in our car, we sometimes get complacent and yes we sometimes become the other guy that DIDN T SEE ME. Think about that when you read the poem below! I Saw You But You Didn t See Me I saw you hug your purse closer to you in the grocery store line but you didn t see me put an extra $10 in the collection plate last Sunday. I saw you pull your child closer when we passed each other on the sidewalk but you didn t see me playing Santa for the kids in my neighborhood. I saw you change your mind about going into the restaurant but you didn t see me riding behind you when you flicked your cigarette butt out the car window. I saw you frown at me when I smiled at your children but you didn t see me when I took time off from work to run toys to the homeless. I saw you stare at my long hair but you didn t see me and my friends cut ten inches off for Locks of Love. I saw you roll your eyes at our leather jackets and gloves... but you didn t see me and my brothers donate our old ones to those that had none. I saw you look in fright at my tattoos but you didn t see me cry as my children were born and had their names written over my heart. I saw you change lanes while rushing off to go somewhere but you didn t see me, going home to be with my family. I saw you complain about how loud and noisy our bikes can be but you didn t see me when you were changing the CD and drifted into my lane. I saw you yelling at your kids in the car but you didn t see me pat my child s hands, knowing he was safe behind me. I saw you reading the newspaper or map as you drove down the road but you didn t see me squeeze my wife s leg when she told me to take the next turn. 21 P A G E 21 News From National A New Communication Tool One of the most difficult things to accomplish, in an Association of our size, is having effective communications (keeping everyone on the same page and informed). For years we have had Divisional Newsletters. They were full of valuable information, which very few actually read or could even find. I can t tell you how many times I wrote educational articles that contained important information addressing current issues. I had limited success in getting the information out. I knew this was due to the amount of questions I continued to receive on the topic I addressed with my article. I m sure the same holds true for the other program administrators. Mike Stiger Director Now that I m Director of GWRRA, I have an opportunity to improve our communications. The International TEAM has come up with this new GWRRA Newsletter called the Insight. It will combine informational articles from all three programs into one Newsletter. Additionally, the link to this Newsletter will reside on the Home Page of the GWRRA website, as well as a link from each Program s website. Also, we will send out blasts to all of the Officers with a link to download it directly. Our goal is to get this information to the people that need it the most, our Chapter Officers. I would like to thank Rick and Madalena Buck, from Region A, for accepting the responsibility of being the editors of the Insight. While we re on the subject of communication, we have made another change to the Home Page of the GWRRA website. We have added a quick link button at the bottom of the page to reach our GWRRA Officer Connection webpage. This page contains valuable information that all Officers need to refer to. I m amazed when I co-instruct an OCP, how many Officers have never visited or know where to find this very important information. It appears to be one of the best kept secrets of GWRRA. This new link on the main page will make it much easier to access the site. Communication is a major key to our success. If anyone has additional ideas on how we can improve our efforts, please let us know. Communication is also a twoway street. I would love to see Directors, Educators, Trainers, and Membership Enhancement Coordinators send us information on your successes so we can share it with others. By sharing the wealth, we can improve Chapter Life for everyone. So send us your success stories. This is a step in the right direction toward improving our Association and building on our success.
