We had 34 in attendance! Summertime usually finds many of our group traveling, so our numbers are down - therefore, 34 in August was a chapter high, at least in recent years. Campers included the Frank & Linda, Jim & D, Harriet & Larry, Dave & Lucy, Don & Tressa, Paula & Jim, Trudy, Al & Della, Joe & Buddy, Susan & Robert, Deb, Sue & John, Gerry & Esther, and Carol & Joe. Drive-ins were Hank & Rita, Sharon & Pam, Paula & Jim s daughter Kaci, grandson, Kole, and fiancé, Chris. Kole seems to be growing right before our very eyes. We enjoyed watching him learn to love fresh peaches and baby-back ribs, not to mention watching him in the pool. Also driving in was Harriet s Dad, Jack Linville, in his spiffy Gator attire. Some of our activities included cheering for the Jaguars on the clubhouse TV on Thursday night. Go Jags! Sue and Tressa got busy sewing ditty bags for the VA Hospital. For many the swimming pool offered a cool experience from the August heat. A couple of the ladies enjoyed using the exercise room - nice and air conditioned. On Friday, D conducted a craft time, showing us how to make dish towel angels. Everyone really got into it, finishing all the kits up that she had - so we can sell them at the Fall Samboree in Eustis. On Saturday evening we played bingo, thanks to our excellent caller, Don. The winners were Linda, Frank, Lucy, John, Gerry, Buddy and the VA Hospital. And, of course, we still played cards, dominos, and other games. As usual, the food was a big part of our campout. Thanks to Don, we had coffee each morn-

2 ing. Both Red Lobster (Thursday night) and Olive Garden (Friday night) provided us with great food and good service. Thursday s continental breakfast was upgraded by the addition of lots of luscious fresh fruit. Sue s watermelon was so sweet and juicy. On Friday, Esther s salads received plenty of highly deserved raves. The cold lunch of sandwiches, salads, and fresh fruit was a perfect choice for summer time. Tressa s delightful apple dumplings were a welcomed addition to the ice cream social on Saturday (many enjoyed that rather than eat a traditional lunch!), even though we had a big breakfast that morning. Thanks to everyone for bringing the tasty sides and desserts to compliment the baby back ribs at Saturday night s dinner. The chapter took up a $100 collection to sponsor one of our members, Susan, who was planning to participate in the Wounded Warrior Run in Jacksonville, on Saturday, September 6th. Many expressed a desire to go out and show our support. (See article further on in newsletter.) The hosts wish to express their sincere appreciation for all the outstanding assistance received from everyone during the weekend. While many worked behind the scenes - or out of our view, we wish to extend a special thanks to D, Harriet, Sue, John, Don, Susan, Linda, and Tressa for help in our various activities and meals. We also are grateful to the staff of Pecan Park for the improvements to the clubhouse - especially the added air conditioner. The temperature in the the hall was perfect. 5 Getaway Sams Sponsors Wounded Warrior Runner - Susan Roche participated in the Wounded Warrior Run on Saturday, September 6th. As the Getaway Sams are very active in supporting our veterans, they collected the $100 entrance fee at the August Campout. The race began and ended at the Metropolitan Park, 1410 Gator Bowl Blvd., in Jacksonville, Florida, and started at 8 a.m. Susan posted a great time of one hour and ten minutes. Be sure to ask her to show you the pictures. Thanks, Susan for participating and thanks to all who supported this event. September VA Visit - This month the Chapter was represented by Sue & John, Gerry & Esther, Al & Della, Jim & D, Don & Tressa and Trudy. Thanks to the generous donations of members, friends and families, we were able to provide $1,707 in books, magazines, toiletries, ditty bags, lap robes, neck pillows and socks. We also provide $50 in canteen books, along with $50 from the state. The veterans enjoyed some lively games of Bingo then received chips, crackers, and cookies to take with them. NOTE: After much discussion, those present agreed that, since most of the group would be in Tennessee for the Samboree, we would not go to the VA in November. Help is needed for the October 5th and December 7th visits, so if you are interested in participating, please let Sue know. We are looking for financial support, material (for neck pillows, lap robes and ditty bags), and clean (gently used) stuffed animals (for December) and toiletries. Congratulations to Paula and Jim Klaiber - who became grandparents again to a beautiful baby girl, born on September 1st. The baby weighed in at 3 lbs, 7 oz., with a head full of beautiful black hair. Kiara Christine is our newest members name - we welcome her to the chapter. Paula told me that the nurses say she is feisty, impatient, and a diva - all great signs that she is doing well. Glad to hear that both an Mom and Kiara are thriving. Ron s Report on The Snelling s Long Ass Trip 2014 Part 3 - We departed the Kansas City area on July 20 headed for Dodge City with an overnight stop in El Dorado, Kansas. Not much in El Dorado, but it is the title to one of my favorite John Wayne movies. It is also the name of the mythical City of Gold the Spanish under Cortez searched for. We didn t find any gold and of course John Wayne was long gone. On July 21st, We pulled into Gunsmoke RV Park in Dodge City. Gunsmoke RV is a very nice little park run by some even nicer folks. I toured the Boot Hill Museum which was interesting. They had a short movie telling some of the story of Dodge City. It was narrated by an old actor who was in the TV show Gunsmoke. While I was there, I stopped in at the Long Branch Saloon and had a beer with the bartender and Miss Kitty who were dressed in period costumes. I also took pictures of statute of El Capitan. El Capitan was a Texas longhorn steer that was used to lead the herds of longhorns up the Santa Fe Trail from Texas and New Mexico. Just outside of town, you can still see remnants of the original trail. So many wagons came up the trail, the ruts they made can still be seen in several places in Kansas.

6 We got the heck out of Dodge City on the 25 th and headed for Colorado. After spending the night in Lamar, CO we headed for the Mile and 0ne third country of Colorado Springs, CO. Denver might be the mile high city, but Monument, Co where our campground, Colorado Heights, is located is in the neighborhood of 7,500 feet above sea level. It is downhill from there for about 50 miles to Denver. Our luck in Colorado Springs was not too good. I took one day to visit some museums by myself that turned into a bust. The first was an aerospace museum at an Air Force Base. After going to the wrong gate, when I got to the right one, I was told that I had to make arrangements at least a day in advance to get on the base. My next stop was the WWII Air Museum. When I finally arrived, I found that it was not open on Monday. From there it was off to see the Mining Museum which turned out to be a collection of rusty equipment and displays under construction. My next stop was the Air Force Academy which was half good. My directions said visitors should enter the North Gate. To make my day complete, I found out that North Gate Avenue went to the SOUTH gate. After finally finding the correct gate, a very polite young Airman directed me to the visitor s center. Although I did get some nice pictures of the sports fields and chapel, it was getting late and the walk to the visitor s center was a little longer than I felt like making, I headed back to the campground. We had planned on driving to the top of Pikes Peak and visiting the Garden of the Gods, but bad weather for the next three (3) days put a damper on that. The saving grace was that we had seen both places on two previous trips. The Garden of the Gods is one of the prettiest places in the country with all sorts of rock formations in a relatively short drive. Century Patch Information: Deb sent the following reminder: Anyone attending Samborees outside Florida should be aware of this patch you must get attendance signed off by the state directors, so if you're going to GA, TN, etc, and think you might ever meet these requirements, you should print out and take this sheet with you. You must attend TEN Samborees, and THREE must be different states. You only need ONE form per rig. You can access the form at: Golf Cart Rental - a message from Deb: For anyone interested in Golf Cart Rental for the SEPT CE- DAR KEY Trip: The host campground (Sunset Isles ) does have a couple of carts. Farwaway Inn ( or ), in Cedar Key, rents 4 seat carts for $65/day. Gulf Kart Co. ( ) rents 2,4 and 6 passenger carts for 2 hours, 4 hours, or a day with rates from $ For one couple, that may seem prohibitive but it's only a mile to town. Two, four, or more couples could easily share the cost and ferry people around. For the November EUSTIS SAMBOREE: The Florida State Staff recommend: Don's Golf Carts headquartered in Leesburg, (352) Jim and D called Langston Golf Cart in Eustis and provided this info: Two passenger carts, weekly rental with tax: $267.50, 4 passenger $ In both cases, the early bird gets the worm when they run out, they run out. For the TENNESSEE SAMBOREE at the end of October: River Plantation RV Park, the host campground, has 5 carts available, first come, first serve; no reservations accepted. Jon's Golf Cars will deliver a 4 passenger gas cart with lights for a week rental for $225 plus tax. Friday, 9/26/14 9:00 a.m. Breakfast at the AdaBlue Cafe (at Sunset Isles) Then we'll get out and explore why Budget Travel magazine voted Cedar Key one of their Top 10 Coolest Small Towns in America.
