7 Rider ED Hypothermia -- Dressing for the Weather By David & Dori Dirig Whether its was heading off to District Rally or enjoying this Southern California weather, I hope everyone ended their summer right. Yes, that's right, summer's over. I heard that some people had trouble with the heat on the way up to Sunnyvale, and this concerns me. Exposure is a concern, no matter the season. While its typical to worry about this in July as you plot a route across the desert, we need to start thinking about the other end of the spectrum, which can be just as dangerous. As we taper out of summer into fall and winter, everyone should start thinking about cold weather gear. Diversity is a luxury that we enjoy here in Southern California, where we can go from one climate to another very quickly. The dangerous part of this is that we can go from one climate to another very quickly...did you all get that?? So you take off for a nice ride in the afternoon one Saturday in November. As you climb to higher elevations, do you have your cold weather gear? You're gonna need it, even if its 70 degrees along the coast. Are your 'omigosh its cold' gloves in the side bag, or they still at home in the closet making room for that trip to Phoenix in July? How about that electric vest or snowmobile suit or thermal underwear? Exposure should be a concern to each of us, no matter the time of year; its simply a matter of what end of the spectrum that we prepare against. This summer we worried about heat and dehydration; now we need to prepare against cold and hypothermia. Hypothermia is a lower than normal body temperature. That s fine, but what does it really mean? Basically, as your body loses heat, its starts to malfunction. Do your hands work as well when they're cold and numb? Your brain suffers the same problem in the cold. As you get cold, you lose the ability to concentrate and react to changing conditions. This can be fatal on a motorcycle. How do we avoid hypothermia?? 1) Don't ride! Know your limits; don't ride if its too cold. If you're riding and you start to get cold, pull off, stop for a cup of coffee, rest your mind and your body someplace warm until you can continue. If your hands and mind are numb from the cold, are your reactions quick enough to save your life? If you have to ask, then pull over and warm up!! 2) Dress appropriately. This can mean super-thick insulated gloves and electric clothing, or it can simply mean wearing multiple layers for insulation. A pair of thermal underwear or silk liners for that lighter pair of gloves can make all
8 the difference in the world. The idea is to wear multiple layers of clothing. In this way, you can add layers to keep warm or remove layers if you get overly warm. Wear multiple thin layers as opposed to one heavy layer, and the layers should fit loosely. A windproof outer layer is ideal to prevent the wind from chilling you. The idea is insulation, combined with protection from the wind blast of riding at highway speeds. The better your insulation and protection from the wind, the less heat you lose, thus reducing your risk of hypothermia. Remember that we ride as a group. If you're cold, let us know so we can stop and let you put on additional layers. To do anything else is unsafe. Even if you don't have the needed gear on a ride, sing out. Someone in the group will most likely have additional gloves or liners or a sweatshirt to get you to where you're going safely. That's the bottom line; safety. As an individual and as a group, we need to be prepared for colder weather. It may seem silly to start talking about this in October, but go ahead and but that sweatshirt or heavier set in gloves in the bike. You (or someone else) may need it down the road Eddie Heck
9 Hello Wingers and Wingettes: Michael & I began the month of June by Mart Saturday June 3, Jim & Lisa Noble lead us to Ripley up Route 2. We took a break in the Wendy s at the I-64 interchange while Jim went out to Cedar Lakes and made his Reservations. Then Roger & Bev Gay lead us on 124 West thru Farm Country to Pomeroy, OH to the Wild Horse Café. Eddie & Jo Heck joined us for Dinner after they stopped at the local Food Fair there in Pomeroy, OH. The service and Food were great. Roger Gay & Bev Gay lead us back home down Route 7. It was a gorgeous day and a good time was had by all. We rode 180 miles. Thank you to Jim & Lisa and Roger & Bev for leading us. Thursday June 8, 2017, we had our Gathering. We had 3 visitors Al Blatt, David Crook and Ron Sims. Missing at our Gathering were Sunny & Donna Luthy due to Sunny not feeling well. Hope you are feeling better Sunny. Roger & Bev Gay went to Buffalo, NY to visit their Son. Hope to see you both next month and you both can tell us about your trip. Rosalie our Treasurer and District MEPC came up with another fun game for all of us to play. Our 3 visitors were initiated by Rosalie but it was all in fun. We hope they join us every month. We also have not seen Gary & Carla Cook, Joe & Billy, or Green & Lois in a while. We appreciate each one of you supporting the chapter and thank you for everything that each one of you do for the chapter. Saturday Jim & Lisa Noble met Go Mart for a Ride to Dakota s in Jackson, Ohio. Jim & Lisa led us on I forget what Routes we took. Michael & I had never been this way to Jackson, OH before. Once again, the weather cooperated. Lisa s Helmet cord was not working so we made a Suzuki of Jackson, OH. They did not have the cord that Lisa needed because they said the helmet or system was too old. Then we went to Dakota s and ate and service was fantastic. Our waitress Nicole ask if we had been there before and was reciting the Menu to us and helping us decide what we should eat by making suggestions. We rode Home another different Route thru the country and it was beautiful. We rode 130 miles on this day. Thank you to Jim & Lisa for leading us. On Sunday Michael received an from Susan Huttman Region N Assistant Trainer and WV Interim District Educator to let us know that there will NOT be a Trike Course at the WV District Rally. Also the following Levels Program Seminars will be Rally including Think Motorcycles, Motorist Awareness, and Co-Rider. Michael & I and Barry & Joyce attended the Buckeye Rally in Mansfield, OH. The Rally was held at the Richland Country Fairgrounds and our Hotel was approximately 30 minutes away bad roads and right smack thru town. I was so looking forward to enjoying the Pool and Hot Tub there. The Hotel had other ideas. The Pool and Hot Tub were closed for renovation. They advertised there were mini Frig s in each room, however this was false advertisement because our room DID NOT have a Refrigerator or a Microwave. We asked to be moved to a room with a Frig because of Michael s Insulin having to be refrigerated and was told they were sold out so we had to make sure we kept Ice in our Cooler to keep his Insulin cold. To top it all Barry & Joyce did not have Air Conditioning in their room for 2 days. Moral to this story is always ask if the Pool will be opened when you are going to be there and be sure to ask if the room they are placing you in, really does have a Refrigerator and Microwave in it or not? Some
10 rooms had a Refrigerator and Microwave and some did not. Do Not ever stay at a La Quinta Inn this was our first time and it will be our last time. The sad thing is they were the host Hotel for the Buckeye Rally. The staff were very friendly and the Hotel was very clean. This Hotel was located beside of Wal-Mart and Cracker Barrel was up the hill from us and Steak & Shake and Applebee s were right across the road so all we had to do is walk to a nearby Restaurant to eat Dinner. We had Lunch at the Rally each day. There were numerous Food Vendors there at the Rally. Friday evening we were provided with a Country Picnic which consisted of Hamburgers or Hot Dog, Aunt Bee s Baked Beans, and Macoroni or Potato Salad. The Hamburgers were not frozen made from scratch and the District Directors Rudy & Linda Copeland cooked them for us on the Grill. The Hamburgers were delicious along with all the fixings Be sure to check out Barry s Trike and Our Fireball to see if you can figure out what else was added to each of our Trikes. Money was spent and more safety chrome was added. The only other WV people there were Mike and Kelly Means from WV-E we saw them on Saturday. Randy Young, Assistant Director for Ohio was courteous enough to give us a tour of his Camp Site. The Ohio District believes in camping. Travelling there, back and forth from the Hotel to the Campgrounds (Rally Site) and returning Home we travelled 490 miles. All of us had a good time and had a safe trip. We were saddened and shocked to learn that Robert Michael Vanderhoof whom used to be the Proctorville, OH H3 Chapter Director was found in Lake George, NY where he had been attending Americade but unfortunately was not alive. He lost his life on an Off Road Honda Dirt Bike on a dirt road as he was returning to his Cabin or Camp site. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. We hope to see each of you at our next Gathering Thursday July 13, We and the Gathering Door prizes are always welcome. Remember to ALWAYS WEAR YOUR HELMET!!! Chapter Directors Michael & Cheryl
