Guest Presentation: Comm Techs LLC Paul and Clay. Started meeting with questions from the group. Hand held radio reception. Get a magnetic mount antenna. MOPAR radio. No data. Routing CB in the car stereo. Mono vs Stereo. It is very critical to tune your antenna. 2.0 or higher results in excessive loss and possible damage to the radio. Can you damage an antenna with too much power. Yes. Antenna mounting. Mount your antenna so that it will not get broken off. 2 foot to 5 foot antenna. Not much difference in short range use. The top of antenna needs to have no metal around it. Grounding is the number one reason for not receiving well and having a low SWR. If you use a ground strap - use braided wire and keep the ground strap short. Higher channels seem to work better. Channels 30 to 40 are usually pretty quiet. Cable length - 18 foot length is best. I.E. Multiples of 18 feet. RG-58 is the standard wire. Does not flex well. Bleed over is typically grounding issues. Get power directly from the battery. Ground to battery, radio, antenna, etc. Ignition and alternator noise. Grounding is the typical cause. Add a noise filter at the radio. Best connection point is directly to the battery. Powder coating is a problem with Jeeps. Bumpers, antenna mounts, etc. Antenna Mounts. Nylon washer goes on the top. #1 mistake they see. Firestiks are American made. Seem to be better made. All antennas are 5/8 wave antenna. Cobra 19s are a good radio. Almost as good as the Cobra 29. Stryker radio. Multiband. 3 year warranty. Can be an issue if you transmit on the ham bands also has more power than allowed on the CB bands. Stay on the CB Bands. $179 new. May improve your reception. Dual antennas need to be at least 9 feet apart. Receiving signal - can only be made better with a better radio. RF Gain is basically a local distance switch. Power mikes help make your voice louder. Will adjust or repair any radio. $30 to tune a radio. Takes about 30 to 40 minutes. $16.50 to tune an antenna. Paul and Clay thank you both very much. Next Month: Lithium car battery President s Report (Kevin K.) Thank you for your participation and support. Runs have filled up for this month and next.. 12 The Rough Rider 12 February 2017 Run Reports (Cont d.) Morning Star Mine (2/12 Jim Molter) (Photos by Jim Molter & Stan Fetherman) Thirteen Jeeps and one Toyota Land Cruiser left the Green Valley Post Office at 8:30 for a scheduled run into the Santa Rita Mountains. The group headed up Box Canyon Road exiting onto Greaterville Road 165. We drove up and over the Morning Star Mine but due to the size of the group we were unable to stop. However, we could see the gated mine shafts which are now controlled by the Forest Service. Continuing up 165 toward Melendrez Pass we exited onto FR-4039 that took us down Fish Canyon. This road is interesting with nice views and water crossings. Just before exiting the creek we came across a couple of gold miners working the creek bed so we had to detour around them. We then drove up and over the Snyder Mine, again no room to stop so we continued to FR4086 and the Cave of the Bell for lunch. After lunch the group made its last stop at Aliso Spring located up Sawmill Canyon Road FR4084 before heading over to Gardner Canyon Road 92 and home.

16 The Rough Rider 16 February 2017 Bonus Run Secret Pass (2/12 Becky Antle) (Photos by Becky Antle) Joan Beck and Phil Strittmatter led a run into Secret Pass in Golden Valley. This is between Kingman and Bullhead City. The run was held on Sunday, February 12, the day after the ASA4WDC delegates meeting. Typically there is a run after each quarterly and all are invited. We had three there this time. Tucson Rough Riders, Arizona Rough Riders and Bullhead 4 Wheelers. This is the Bullhead 4 Wheelers adopt a trail in that area. The trail is rated at least a 3.5 to a 4 in some places but very scenic. The weather was nice with a little rain. But it was a beautiful trip.

18 The Rough Rider 18 February 2017 Editor s Corner Beware the Ides of March at least, that was what they told Julius Caesar. This year, the Ides fall in the middle of the week, so most of us aren t likely to be on the trail. Be careful anyway. Speaking of being on the trail, TRR has a *very* full calendar now! Nine runs in the next few months have been made official (by their inclusion on the club Calendar), and there are more to come! Please check out the Upcoming Events section of this newsletter and the New Runs section of the meeting minutes for all the information that s currently available. While it s great to learn all about the trails that are close to us (Jim Molter has been doing a superb job of leading runs in the areas south of Tucson, for instance), there is a whole state to explore! Andy and Gale Sacio spent a weekend at Table Mesa last month, and new trails have been introduced to the club by several members. Check out the Bonus Run report by Becky Antle on Page 16. While this trail might be a bit far for a day run, I think it would be an excellent destination for a weekend trip. But if you re willing to travel 2 or 3 hours for a trail, you might be surprised at how many new trails we could include in the club s repertoire. One action that seems to have fallen by the wayside this year is writing about the runs for the newsletter. Of the six club runs in this issue, only one had a write-up. You ll have to fill in your own words for the others. Remember, the newsletter is seen by non-members and serves as one of the tools we have for new folks to find out about us. If all I can put in the Rough Rider is pictures, they might not be as interested as if there s an accompanying story. So please Please PLEASE if you lead a run, give me a story to go with the photographs! (Or ask someone else on the run to do it, if you don t think you re up to the task yourself.) Something else to think about: Are you part of the Meet the Rough Riders section on our website? You know that I include head shots of the run leaders when I can (which is most of the time), but sometimes there isn t any photo I can pull for the purpose. Tim has a page on the website that tells you how to get added to this section, and I strongly encourage you to do this. It s another way we can learn about each other, and let non-members know about us, too. If you *are* on the Meet the Rough Riders page, please review your information to make sure it s still current. [Yes, this applies to me, too. I m just as guilty as anyone else of failing to review information to make sure it s up to date.] Happy 30th (TRR) Anniversary to Becky and Rheal! You guys have actually survived 30 years in the club! Way to go! *************** JeepMonster progress: None since last month, so I ll just leave you with the photo of the new (but not-yet-installed) gauges and the B-52 cockpit that the JeepMonster might look like eventually.
