Show & Tell Chuck Hocking brought a C47 he had gotten from Rich Leitgen. Chuck added a steerable tailwheel. On the first flight the model flew about 6 feet and pitched straight up. Bob Lindeman managed to land it with minimal damage and decided it was probably a bit tail-heavy. Dan K added lead weights with a safety pin, held the battery in with rubber bands, and Bob flew it. This time it flew beautifully, like a twin star. Chuck has been notified by members that his insignia is on the wrong wing and upside down. Dave Mohr has a knock off of a Turnigy 5 way battery meter (capacitance, cell resistance, servo metering, cell voltage, and something else. Dave passed it around with a puffed battery and it shows the varying resistance between the cells. This handy meter was $15 from Amazon. Rikk Wolfs discussed the XFY-1 Pogo, an early VTOL aircraft with two tandem Allison turbojet engines. The pilot sat in cockpit and seat could be rotated 45 degrees for when the plane sat on its tail fins. The pilot would have to look outside to figure out orientation, manage yaw, roll and pitch in a vertical position, while adjusting his seat to flight orientation. For landing, the pilot had to stick his head outside the cockpit and look down with props only inches from his head. The pilot trained with the plane Newsletter on a winch Date line through the spinner in an old hangar, so if he was having a bad landing, he could tell the winch guy to catch him. Rikk bought a model of the Pogo from Dudley, a Great Planes VFO(now discontinued). Dudley had flown it in his basement, tethered with 4 ropes. Rikk tried flying it, got it off the ground, and flew around horizontally, but when he had to land it, things didn t go well, and the model was reduced to foam bits. Rikk bought an orange DSMX receiver with 3 axis gyro, but apparently this didn t fix all the problems, as the model has many, many patches, and according to Rikk "about 2 ounces of CA glue in it" Rikk then tried flying it in his barn where he hit many objects including himself. He got to a point where he can take it off and hover for about 10 seconds and land, only wrecking every 5 flights or so. Raffle There was an unadvertised addition to the raffle: A Mystery Box of Crap from Rikk's barn, eventually chosen by raffle winner Bill Scheels. Treasurer s report The current Balance is $2, after Port-o-John and Pizza expenses. The club plans to spend $100 on a gift certificate and candy/poinsettias for the land owner and the lessor, The raffle balance is around $1800 between inventory and capital.

2 Committee Reports The annual club holiday banquet will be April 1. The annual expo/swap meet is Jan 3 at 9 A.M. for the general public Old Business There was no old business. New Business Rikk: Ron Igacheck from precision aero: would like to start selling bulk fuel again locally. Fuel buy info will be in future newsletters. He sells Byron and Wildcat fuel. Rikk: internet forum frequenters will have noticed a lot of discussion about new regulations from NTSB requiring all aircraft over 250g be registered with the FAA. In Albany Co NY, there is pending legislation banning all RC vehicles, including cars. Ultimately the clubs met with the Sheriff and legislator (the sheriff was the one pushing the legislation). The Sheriffs reason was that he had an example of a person flying a quad into a prison with contraband. The ban has not gone into effect thanks to the efforts of the club. New members voted In: Dale Stukel, Greg Barlow. Greg is a returning member and former officer of the club Jim Zahorik; The AMA is now offering membership for a year, based on the date you joined originally, starting in Sept of this year. Most current club members are Jan-Dec. Jim called the AMA and spoke with LuAnn in membership. Local club membership follows the calendar year, so members who lapse their AMA membership midi-year, will still have a club membership: The AMA says they will send an to the secretary/treasurer of record each month so they know who is up for renewal. Jim felt this was just a huge additional workload. The AMA representative stated they had not thought about the burden to officers. Todd Weiler: There will be another outreach out opportunity at Burlington school in March. There will be another one probably in May at the public school in Burlington. Chuck Hocking mentioned a tour residents of four pillars took of the Aeronca Citabria factory n Rochester, WI. Other News: Precision Aero is at about 25% of the orders needed for the bulk fuel buy. Be sure to get your order in before the March 12 deadline. 3 As usual, John Slatinsky presided over the annual Christmas Raffle Your humble newsletter editor got the first win and took home this snappy micro B-17g Pat Hansen picked up a 30cc sized Corvus Racer540 ARF Dave Mohr won a Cessna 180 ARF Larry Otto took home a Durafly RTF Hellcat, transmitter included Matt Teresinski picked up a snappy new hat.

Christopherson won an Extra-330S Bill Scheels seems delighted with his Mystery box While there turned out to be some pretty useful stuff in the box, Rikk seems even more pleased to be rid of it. Gentlemen, I have secured the Cushing Gym in Delafield for Indoor Flying on Wednesday Evenings. It is a 25 night schedule with flying starting at 8PM. First evening is September 16th and ends on May 18th. The cost per pilot is $5.00 for the entire season, which comes out to 20 cents a night. I guess that eliminates that excuse for not coming out.
