GWRRA Chapter SC-E Greenville, SC Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge A Duly Chartered Chapter of GWRRA, Region A VOLUME 2 - ISSUE 2 From the Chapter Directors: Greetings Chapter-E! It s hard to believe that January has already come and gone! Our first gathering at our New Location (Quaker Steak and Lube) was a great success. Thank you to those of you who came out and supported the Chapter! Was nice to see some folks make it out that we haven t seen in a long time. Weather this last month has flipped from ice to short-sleeve days. It was nice to get out and ride a little where work and the weather permitted those of you who made it out for the ride down to Elberton, GA enjoyed a nice country ride. And an INTERESTING one, too! Seems we inadvertently found ourselves running the MLK Parade Route on the way into town. That made for some strange looks, and a few good laughs! January s Officer s Conference in Lexington was very informative. Each of the SC Chapters were represented, and the various Chapter Directors presented information on what the Chapter had done last year, as well as plans for A new Chapter Visitation Program was announced. This program is replacing the previous Plaque Attack program. 2 PAGE 2 each of the Chapters will have two (2) double-points months. District Events will count double-points as well. FEBRUARY is the month for Chapter-E s events to count DOUBLE for those visiting our Gathering or various Chapter Events (then again in August). We would like to encourage each of you to participate as much as possible. The good news is that rides, dinners, or any other Chapter event also count toward the program so we will have many opportunities outside of simply visiting another Chapter s Gathering. Contests and plans for the SC Rally were announced also. We will be planning rides to various Historic Sites in the area over the next couple of months we need to get pictures of Chapter Participants AT these sites for one of the Rally Projects. Come on out and join in we ll be sure to make a good ride out of each of these visits! Congratulations to our new Couple of the Year: John & Janet Crabtree. Also, Congratulations to our INDIVIDUAL of the year: Paul Workman! Thank you for your Participation and support of the Chapter! On January 29, several of us went to take the ITCP (Instructor Trainer Certification Program) in Burlington, N.C. We now have three (3) GWRRA University Certified Instructors in our Chapter: Don & Rhonda Weed, and Jimmy Kruse. This will allow us to offer training modules and seminars right here at the Chapter Level, and in the surrounding communities! We expect to be scheduling some training opportunities by March 1st. Just a Reminder: Make sure you get your SC Rally Registrations in ASAP. This year s Rally will be quite different, and focuses more on RIDES. We hope that many of you will come out and join us for the FUN, and enjoy the guided rides planned in scenic Beafort, SC (and the surrounding areas). Chapter-E needs your help! We need several Participants that are willing to play an active role in Chapter positions, and/or help coordinating. Some of you are worried about having to run all over the country for training WORRY NOT. If you re willing to commit just ONE (1) full day of your time we can now offer training right here in town (some of us will even be happy to do it a second time, with you)! We greatly appreciate the continued support from many of you, and look forward to a GREAT YEAR in 2017! Just a reminder the Info-Line s, ride info, and all Chapter ( ed) Announcements will come directly from one of the two Chapter addresses listed below: scchaptere@gmail.com or mec4sce@gmail.com If you have something you would like to see go out, please send it in to one of these addresses.

PAGE 3 Just a few pictures from the month of January. Plenty of opportunities with Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge! We would like to invite EVERYONE to join us for our Weekly Friendship Dinners (Tuesdays, Meet at 6, eat at 6:30). If you have a restaurant in mind that you think others might enjoy, why not consider HOSTING one of our Weekly Friendship Dinners? To host, simply get with Tom Plesser or Sheila Haynes at our next Chapter Gathering. Information and Location of Friendship Dinners (and various planned rides or activities) can be found in the Info-Line s, on our Website Calendar, or our Facebook Group Page (as can many other events, photos, and shared moments of fun). Please share events, stories or memories that you think others might enjoy on our Facebook Group Page. This group is visible to all, and regular Chapter-E Participants may sign up to post. Gathering Reminder: Our February Gathering will be held February 11th at Quaker Steak and Lube, 10 Chrome Drive in Greenville. Eat at 1pm, Meet at 2pm. We hope to see all of you there! Working with you- to make our Chapter the BEST it can be: -Don and Rhonda Weed, Chapter Directors

PAGE 4 From the Chapter Educators: Loose Items We often talk about taking the time to perform TCLOCKS and check our bikes over to ensure they are SAFE before we operate them. There is no question as to how important these checks are. How many times do we stop and check OURSELVES before riding? Are you, and your Co-Rider feeling well, properly rested, and properly dressed? It s easy to overlook the small things, especially items such as loose articles of clothing. Just as it s important to make sure everything on our bike is tight and properly secured, it s ALSO important that the Rider and Co-Rider s clothing articles are properly and securely fastened. I recently came across the following story, which I d like to share as a vivid reminder: A WORD OF WARNING TO MY FELLOW BIKERS Something you probably never even thought of: An Oklahoma CVMA member went down hard on his way home from a Saturday afternoon ride. He and his wife were only 5 miles from home when, according to witnesses, her scarf somehow became wrapped up in the rear tire or brake rotor of his bike bringing them to a rapid halt. It jerked her off the bike and she landed hard head-first onto the roadway. She had to be air-flighted to St Francis Hospital in Tulsa. He lost control of the bike and he also went down hard. He is listed as having facial injuries and a possible concussion while Rebecca is listed in critical condition with several unknown injuries. It does not look good for her right now. Please share. BE CAREFUL-RIDE SAFE (From Fred Bluesman Paris Tx.) Next time you get ready to mount-up, take an extra moment to look at what you and your Co-Rider are wearing, so as to make sure it will remain where it is supposed to be! Until next time: Ride Safe, and Remember to wear ALL the GEAR, ALL the TIME (ATGATT). -Jerry and Teresa Hill, Chapter Educators

PAGE 5 CRUISING WITH THE KRUSES What an awesome turnout we had at our January gathering! Many thanks to everyone who came out to support Chapter E. Members from not only Chapter E, but visiting Chapters were asking how they could help set up and offered assistance throughout the day. A true sense of friends and cooperation. We really appreciated the kind gestures. Welcome again to Tom Plesser, Sheila Haynes and David Thompson! We are so happy to have the 3 of you join us. We love your enthusiasm and willingness to get involved. It was a proud moment to see the check for $1200 presented to Meals on Wheels. A big Thank You to everyone who participates in the monthly "Project Gift". The officers conference held in Lexington was very informative. Those who attended were Don and Rhonda Weed, Susan and Jimmy Kruse, Tom Plesser, Janet and John Crabtree. Lots of exciting activities will be happening among the chapters in South Carolina. Let's show them our support with visits to their gatherings. Please make plans to join us at the South Carolina District Rally in Beaufort, SC in May!!! Happy Valentines Day -Jimmy and Susan Kruse Assistant Chapter Directors

PAGE 6 From the MEC Corner: Its ALL about the FUN!!! We sincerely hope that each of you are able to make it out for our Chapter Gathering on February 11th. This month s Gathering will feature THREE (3) Drawings: (1) A 50/25/25, (2) Project Gift Drawing (valued at $50 or more), and (3) A special Chapter-Pride Drawing for the winners choice of an XL Heated Jacket w/controller, OR $100 in CASH. The only catch is that you MUST BE PRESENT and PURCHASE TICKETS to win! Our Chapter started the month of January with a Friendship Dinner at Chin-Chin Restaurant, with 14 Participants and 4 visitors. Lots of fun and TONS of laughs for all that attended each of our FIVE (5) Friendship Dinners this month! January 15th a group rode down to Elberton, GA. This was an especially interesting ride! As we entered Elberton, we noticed a number of cars parked on either side of the road, and LOTS of people staring at us (kids waving too). Imagine 5 Goldwings, 3 of them with Modulating Headlights leading the route for what we eventually realized was the MLK Parade in Elberton! Perhaps our Goldwings weren t exactly what they were expecting! We stopped for a bite to eat, laughed about it and set out for a different route out of town. Don s GPS managed to find us a way back to our route without having to wait through the police blockades. 7 of us attended the SC District Conference on the 21st. The format was changed (for the better), and everyone had a good time (we even got out considerably earlier than previous years)! Lots of good information was provided. For those of you who have been wondering about the Plaque Attack - a new program was announced that is points-based for visiting other Chapters (not just their Gatherings for ANY of their scheduled events)! Each Chapter has two months throughout the year where visitors receive DOUBLE points for participating with that Chapter. CHAPTER-E is a Double-Points Chapter for February! We re looking to see folks visiting from other Chapters and joining in for fun at our Gatherings, Rides, and even Friendship Dinners. We will be planning rides to Historic Sites throughout the state over the next couple of months, in an effort to RIDE MORE, and document memories from the Historic Sites for the SC District Project at this year s S.C. Rally (in May). Speaking of riding- Sign up for this year s SC Rally in Beaufort, SC! Multiple guided rides will be available, and there will be a group of us riding down for the Rally this year! Can t wait!!! I would like to take a minute to thank Lyle Watson for his newsletter article contributions. These articles will be a series that he will be doing, see Page-10 for this month s installment of The History of Rock and Roll. When you see Lyle, be sure to thank him! What to expect in 2017: -Rides nearly every weekend, pending weather of course -A large variety of fun events on our calendar, to include everyone -Lots of Chapter visitations in GA, SC, NC, TN & include their rides / events -Events to recruit new participants and help our Chapter to GROW -Events to raise Motorcyclist Awareness in surrounding communities -More participation in our SC Rally with the different contests offered

PAGE 9 CHAPTER MASCOT (E-Rider s Corner) Happy New Year!!!! I hope all of you have made great New Years resolutions and have not broken them already. One of mine is to meet new Chapters and the people in them this year. I got to go to Lexington this year to the SC conference and hear all of what other chapters are doing and their plans for the up coming year. Talking about some new things that are happening SC is going to do point and double point for visiting other chapters. So please get behind the Chapter and come with me to meet new and reconnect with some that some of you have probably not seen in some time. Big and exciting changes are already happening in Chapter E what about Quaker Steak and Lube? That place was great and looked like great food. I want to get on the bike in the main dinning room and ride that for a few rounds. I think they need to put a Goldwing in there but for now it's ok. The New Years ride had to be rescheduled because of weather so several of us had a New Year's Eve ride. We went to Harold's in Gaffney and had a great time. I got to see my traveling buddies John and Janet Crabtree. We need to give them a paws up for being the Couple of the Year this year. Congratulations!!!! Another big paws-up for Paul Workman for being the Individual of the Year. Congratulations!!!! I was going to ride with Jimmy on New Year's Day but it was raining and cold so I stayed with Susan by the fireplace and watched Jimmy ride. I am not sure but don't think he went very far but still rode on New Year's Day. I got to meet the new??? something that is replacing the retiring Charlie Brown. He needs a really cool name so please help come up with one and welcome it to the Chapter. I hope by the end of the year the stories and adventures we get to go on will be great. I would like to thank each of you for welcoming me in to your life's and showing me love this past year. I hope to see you at some of the events this year and see great support for this Chapter and welcome new members into our great family. Have a safe ride and stay warm until next month- Ruff Ruff!!! -E-Rider Kruse, Chapter-E Mascot

PAGE 10 The History of Rock and Roll By: Lyle Watson In my first article on the history of rock and roll, I referred to Tin Pan Alley for one and Stephen Foster for another. Before I get into the Blues and how Blues helped bring about rock and roll, I wanted to backtrack just a bit and mention Tin Pan Alley and Foster and point out the tragedy of Stephen Foster. In his lifetime, Foster was probably the leading figure in popular music. He wrote many songs about the South although he was not from the South and had never visited it. His songs were clean and direct. Because of the style he wrote in, his songs were easy to master and without very much practice. His arrangements could be adapted to accommodate whatever instruments a town had on hand. Despite this and the popularity of his music, he died a pauper at 38. One may ask, how could that be? It has to do with a lack of copyright laws when he lived. Whatever existed was weak and not enforced. There were n0 royalties for creators. Most money was made from sheet music and it was the companies who produced it who made the money, not the creators. After his death, laws came about that protected the rights of creators, but too late to be of value to Foster. At the same time, it was the copyright laws that enabled creativity, not just in music, but the arts in general to explode. No longer did a person have to be worried about having their work used without being fairly compensated for it. The Civil War brought changes as well. One of the changes was the increasing popularity of Brass Band music. Military bands became concert bands and travelled from town to town performing, something not done before and a hint of what was to come when Country, Jazz, Blues, and then Rock became more popular and small bands travelled the country to play their music and seek fame and fortune. Musical theater became a part of city life and this in turn led to the emergence of Broadway, where pop music as we know it today was born and it was the economic middle class that loved it and made it so popular. Let the rich have their opera and classical music, those outside it would have their pop music and music theaters. But this was city music mainly. Outside of the city, in the rural parts of the US, it was mail order houses such as Sears & Roebuck who sold musical instruments at prices that ordinary Americans could afford and then learn to play. As these instruments made it into remote areas, music began to change. Fiddles began to be replaced by guitars for instance. Black music too began to change. Black Folk music became a musical force as White musicians began to copy and imitate Black musicians and European trained Black musicians gained audiences in New York and New Orleans. The most popular Black innovator and entertainer at the time was a ragtime piano-based musician named Scott Joplin and it was he who made jazz and ragtime popular with the masses. He died in 1917, but thanks to him and better times,.the piano and guitar, normally found only in churches only, became popular with the public and this helped give birth to The Blues, which had been around for some time, but had not been heard much by the public in general. But this would change because of one man, WC Handy, who owned a club in Memphis, on Beale Street.

PAGE 11 Motorist Awareness Program: Did you know that YOU are our Chapter s BEST outreach for Motorist Awareness? First-hand exposure helps other motorists remember that they are not the only ones on the road today and reminds them to stay alert and watch for motorcycles (and other smaller vehicles). No special training is required your part may be as simple as wearing a shirt, posting a sign, handing out a flyer, or as involved as presenting a Motorist Awareness Seminar to a Driver s Ed class. The choice is yours but keep in mind, the life that your efforts saves may be yours or someone dear to you! We have some MAA (not GWRRA) signs, bumper stickers, license plates and stickers to get the word out. Please let us know if you would like to place a sign in your yard or want any of the items. If you have a yard sign, bumper sticker, or other Motorist Awareness item you are displaying, please let Jimmy know, as we track our Chapter s efforts and report them Quarterly (and also receive credit for Chapter of the Year). If you are interested in assisting, or working with our Chapter Team, please contact our Chapter Rider Ambassador: Jimmy Kruse (864) Remember to LOOK TWICE Save a Life!
