1 Mountain Lion Gazette Washington Region I - July District WA Chapter M ~ Yakima, Washington Words from our Chapter Director Hello Chapter M members, July, July, July..half of 2013 is already here and on its way out. There is a lot to do in the summer time, weather you are doing GWRRA events and adventures or you are doing your own family events. Summer seems to be finally here. June was GREAT with all the rides that we, Chapter WA-M and GWRRA have to offer. My favorite for the month of June was the Cowboy Dinner Tree Ride, hosted by Bill Knight. If you have never been on this ride, I strongly recommend it. Although this year was a little wet with the rain, it was still an awesome ride and the dinner was Fabulous! Now on to the upcoming events for July I want to mention and strongly urge you to attend WA District Convention on July in Grandview, WA. This may be the last District Convention on this side of the mountain and close to home that we will have for a while. With the District Convention being in our back yard we are the host Chapter those 3 days. I have put out an invitation to all chapter members who are coming for the District Convention to join us Thursday, July 18 th at Snipes Mountain Brewery in Sunnyside for our weekly social. Also we will be in charge of maintaining the coffee and ice water at the convention. Districts will provide ALL equipment and product needed we just need to make sure it s fresh and available to all. On Friday, July 19 th Caleb King and his family will be joining us at the convention for a viewing of the bikes, dinner and the lighted parade. I am excepting Caleb and his family about 3 pm that afternoon and I am hoping we, Chapter WA- M can show Caleb and his family what GWRRA is about. On Saturday, July 20 th is the Rumble in the Jungle games 10:30 am to 2:30 pm, again I am asking for your help on this game. We will have a Tiger Hunt game, giving out tigers to all the winners! District s major dinner is also on Saturday evening serving prime rib or chicken depending on what you ordered along with closing ceremonies that evening. I do hope all of Chapter WA- M can and will participant in this event, bring your families it will be a Wonderful 3 days of exciting activities I m sure. Too HOT here in the valley? Then head on up to the Hobo Stew Campout, July th hosted by Ron Hafsos at Longmire Meadows on the Little Naches. Three days of camping and amazing food offered and shared by all, along with great entertainment by the Cotton Balls on Saturday, July 13 th. Plus our Thursday Social July 11 th is at Whislin Jack s. Hope to see you there! Sherre Holden, Chapter WA- M Director
2 Words from our Assistant Chapter Director Now that summer is in full swing it's exciting to come to the monthly meeting and see where everyone has gone this past month and is going next month. There are lots of motorcycle rallies to choose from and lots of local activities planned by our own club. I hope to see everyone at the Hobo Campout July and especially in Grandview on the third weekend in July. Happy Fourth of July to everyone! See you all soon. Assistant Chapter Director, Darrell & Elaine Gorman Words from our Membership Enhancement Coordinator Greetings, Hope everyone is taking advantage of all the riding opportunities available to you this summer! And don t forget to bring your friends along and introduce them to all the benefits of GWRRA Membership! Have you registered for Washington District Convention coming up in Grandview on July 18-21?? It s still not too late to join the fun and come Rumble in the Jungle!! Your Leadership Core Team is busy making plans for our Chapter s participation and we could sure use everyone s support. Also plan on joining everyone on July 18 th at our Thursday Night social at Snipes Mountain Brewery in Sunnyside the time is 6:00 p.m. Let Sherre know if you are attending so she can give Snipes a heads up on how many people to expect. Looking forward to seeing all of you soon at the July 6 th Chapter Meeting at the Branding Iron breakfast at 9:00 am meeting at 10:00 a.m. Don t forget to bring your planning calendars to the meeting so you can write down all of the exciting events coming your way!! As always remember you can contact me anytime with your suggestions or concerns at dksantos@embarqmail.com or at Happy Riding and hope to see all of you real soon! Membership Enhancement Coordinator Dan Santos A Few Extra Notes Chapter C has closed, LeeAnn & Russ have stepped down as Director and no one was willing to take their place. LeeAnn & Russ along with some of the other members will be joining Chapter E. Chapter B will not be having a July meeting. Chapter E, Bob Thurgood passed away and his services are Saturday, July 6 th at 10 at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Bothell, WA. A little some about Bob: GWRRA was a big part of Bob and Thess s life. They were extremely passionate about GWRRA and particularly about the COY Couple of the Year program. The Thurgood s were our Chapter E Couple Of The Year in 2003 and They went on to be selected as the Washington District Couple of the year in 2004 and In 2005 they competed in the Region I selection process and were chosen as our Region I Couple Of The Year for 2005 and 2006 and they went on to compete for the International Couple of the Year at Wing Ding in After their long stretch in the Couple of the Year program, Bob and Thess continued to give back to our district as the Washington District, Couple of the Year coordinators from 2006 through They set the bar for those to follow. wam.gwrra-wa.org Page 2 of 12
3 Rider Education Riding Together Hello fellow rider s and GWRRA members. I d like to talk about riding in a group or with someone else on a second bike. I was talking to two GWRRA members at Denny s Restaurant in Union Gap. One rider that was riding a silver Honda Goldwing 1800 (Richard) was from a small town in Texas (I don t remember the town) and the other rider that was riding a Honda Goldwing 1500 (Dave) was from Yazoo City Mississippi. As I pulled in to the parking lot I saw that they were pulling trailers and that they were jump starting the battery on the So I parked the company work pickup and mossied over to chat with them and to see if they needed any help. I introduced myself to them and asked if there was anything that I could do to help them and they said no, that the battery would not start the bike and they were jumping it the 1800, and that the battery was only a year old and that he had bought it at Wal-Mart about 1 year ago and that the battery that was in the bike lasted about 6 years. Richard said the when he pulled the 6 year old battery out of the bike that it weighted more than the new battery that he was putting in. So we talked about the difference in the batteries and what that meant. While the battery was being charged by the 1500 (Dave s Bike) we started talking about the ride that they were on, I asked where they were headed and coming from. Dave said he left Mississippi and head down to Texas to pick up Richard and then to Southern California, up along the coast line till they hit Vancouver then to Goldendale and in to Yakima. Dave was telling me that as they was coming from Goldendale he was in the lead and riding along and got down about to the scale house by Toppenish when he noticed no Richard so he waited for him about 10 minutes then turned around and headed back toward Goldendale to see what happened to his friend. Well about 21 miles back towards Goldendale he found he buddy parked alongside the road just waiting for Dave to show up. What had happened was the battery went dead while he was riding, The alternator gage show the bike was charging but not enough to run everything he had on (Electric jacket, Electric Pants, Radio, GPS, ect.). So they charged his bike enough to get them to Denny s in Union Gap to have breakfast and then they was head to Wal Mart. I told them where the closest Wal-Mart was on East Yakima Ave about 3 miles up the freeway. Richard and I got to talking shop and I asked him where they was headed and he said they was head to Canada and across the bottom back to Michigan and back in to the United States. I was telling Richard that I, myself thought that would be a nice ride and that I had not rode that part before, but that I have ridden the Eastern part of Canada from Michigan and that I ve done the 49 States of USA and 7 providences of Canada. He said he too had done the 49 States and all of Canada providences and he was getting impatient for them to get that bridge built to Hawaii. I told him I agreed that I was trying to wait patiently for them to build it too. They finely started the Honda Goldwing 1800 and was head to Wal-Mart to see what the warranty is on their batteries. I m sure you have maybe had talks with other people about similar stories but the purpose of telling you this story is why did it take so long for Dave to go check on his Friend? 42 miles plus 10 minutes is a long time not to see a riding partner! A lot of things could have happened in that 1 hour time!! When you re riding with someone else you should always be able to see them in a 5 minute time frame. If you don t see them slow down and allow them to catch up, if you still don t see them shortly then turn around and go back, who knows you might pass them coming around the next corner, at least you will know. A rider down is not something you want to see, but the sooner you find out the sooner you can help. Well it s off to work for me; it looks like it is going to be 85 today I hope you get a chance to go for a ride soon.
