1 VOL.: XLVIII No: 1 April 2014 EC NOTES Bruce Goll, KB8TRI ARRL EC Franklin County EC NOTES Bruce E. Goll, KB8TRI Franklin County Ohio EC Welcome to spring, well it s supposed to be, some days it acts like it is and others it acts like it is still winter. Hopefully you all survived the winter without too many mishaps to you, your autos, your antenna s, etc. We have a couple of upcoming events in the next month that require a large number of volunteers to cover sites. First up is the COTS county wide hospital drill on May 8. This will require staffing of all hospitals in the county with one ham at each hospital to assist with communications during the drill. There will be about 250 victims that will be sent to different hospitals in the county. We will be testing fldigi at two of the hospitals with communication back to COTS using fldigi. This will be in addition to regular voice communications. Two days after that event, May 10 and May 11 (Mother s Day Weekend) we have TOSRV to support. This is a multi -county event and we will have assistance from other counties south of Franklin County down to the Ohio River at Portsmouth, Ohio. If you are available to help support this event please contact Kevin O Harra, KD8IIB so he can add you to the list. Any and all hams are welcome to assist with this event, you do not need to be a member of COARES to help us out, so invite your ham friends who are not COARES members to come out and help either or both days. Later in the year we have the Columbus Marathon to support, more info on that in the upcoming months. There will be many more events to assist with so keep checking the COARES web page, for more event info. We started the year off with the Arnold Classic and the Arnold Pump and Run 5K race and those were both well handled by our group. Thanks to all who assisted with those events. Please make every effort to check into our Wednesday night nets at 8 PM weekly except for the in-person meeting nights, usually the third Wednesday of each month. However, the May meeting will be on Wednesday, May 7 to get your TOSRV packets, t-shirts and other last minute info regarding TOSRV. Our Mission: To provide emergency communications to central Ohio public safety, emergency, health, government and relief agencies in times of disaster. To keep our skills sharp, we provide communication support for many public service events. Next Meeting 7:30 pm, Wednesday, May 10, 2014 Franklin County Emergency Management and Homeland Security Don t forget! Renew your membership in Kroger Community Rewards! Just visit and click on Columbus and Enroll. The code for COARES is COARES info & Contacts 3 Pump & Run and Pumpkin run 4 Honor Flight 5 TOSRV, call for volunteers! 6 Calendar, looking forward

4 Honor Flight 2013 Chris Huyette, KD8OAE Event Coordinator Honor Flight Reunion 2013 For those of you that may not be aware I wanted to let everyone know that we (C.O.A.R.E.S) assisted the Honor flight Ground crew with there annual reunion which took place Sunday Nov. 3 rd. During this event we shadowed the admins from the ground grew so they are able to communicate in the crowded environment. Those of you who have worked this event or have taken part in an Honor Flight know how amazing and emotional this reunion can be. This year they had a special presentation to a veteran who served in the World War II and was never issued any of his service medals. He was awarded 3 service medals. HONOR FLIGHT COLUMBUS RECOGNIZES AND CELEBRATES WORLD WAR II AND KOREAN WAR VETERANS BY FLYING THEM TO WASHINGTON, D.C. TO VISIT MEMORIALS DEDICATED TO THEIR IMPORTANT SERVICE AT NO COST TO THEM. VETERANS ARE PROVIDED THIS TOUR-OF-HONOR EXPERIENCE AS A TOKEN OF OUR GRATITUDE AND RESPECT FOR THEIR SERVICE TO OUR COUNTRY. THE WORLD WAR II MEMORIAL WAS DEDICATED IN MAY 2004 AND THE KOREAN WAR MEMORIAL WAS DEDICATED IN JULY THEY ARE LONG OVERDUE TRIBUTES TO THE MEN AND WOMEN WHO SACRIFICED SO MUCH FOR OUR FREEDOM, AND A MEMORIAL TO THOSE WHO MADE THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE. REGRETTABLY, MANY OF THESE AGING VETS HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO VISIT THEIR MEMORIAL IN A CONVENTIONAL WAY ON THEIR OWN DUE TO LACK OF FUNDS OR TRAVEL IMPEDIMENTS. THROUGH VOLUNTEER GUARDIANS WHO PAY THEIR OWN WAY, WE OVERCOME MANY OF THE PROBLEMS AND ESCORT THEM ON THIS TRIP OF A LIFETIME. THESE ALL-EXPENSE-PAID, ONE-DAY TRIPS TO THE NATION S CAPITAL OCCUR APRIL NOVEMBER AS DONATIONS PERMIT. *KOREAN WAR VETERANS ARE THOSE WHO SERVED FROM JUNE 25, 1950 TO JANUARY 31, Central Ohio Amateur Radio Emergency Service Page 5
