Shasta Sno-Mobilers Mission Statement A nonprofit organization of dedicated snowmobilers working together to promote the safety and pleasure of snowmobiling for everyone s greater enjoyment of the sport. We work to retain for your multiple-use and enjoyment your National Forests and other public lands. We provide you with a vital link to others whom enjoy your sport. Regular Club Meeting - 02/08/02 CALL TO ORDER: Meeting called to order by Dick Cowardin at 7:45pm at Silva s in Weed. Fifteen attending. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Minutes approved as mailed from 01/11/01 meeting. TREASURERS REPORT (Eileen): Eileen reported a checking account correction from the 10/05/01 meeting. She forgot to add a deposit of $95.00 for membership renewals. This corrects the ending balance of the 10/05/01 meeting to $ Corrects the 11/02/01 meeting beginning balance to $ and ending balance to $ Corrects the 01/11/02 meeting beginning balance to $ and ending balance to $ Balance as of last meeting, 01/11/01 corrected to $ Checks Written: $ CNSA Safety Seminar lunch, $11.66 Sno-Phone, $ postage, & $53.57 address labels. Deposits: $200 for check written on 10/16/00 to CNSA Ways and Means that was never cashed, $ membership dues, $25.00 bounced renewal check and bank service charge ($5.00), $77.00 Safety Seminar donations, & $75.00 donation to the Club because the Elgin boys helped unstick snowmobilers at Christmas. Balance as of 02/04 is $ STANDING COMMITTEES: Nordic Bypass: We have a Club ride through the Nordic Bypass scheduled for Saturday, March 9th. The plan is to meet at the Nordic Bypass for lunch (bring your own lunch). Riders will leave out of Pilgrim Creek and Chuck s Park. If leaving from Chuck s Park, the ride is somewhere around 80 miles round trip, be sure to bring plenty of fuel, also you will have to leave earlier to meet the other riders. We are going to see if the FS will groom the M31 Road for us. Please check the Club s Snow phone a few days before the ride to make sure everything is still a go. Warming Huts/Sheds/Snoparks: 1) Deer Mt./Chuck Best Park: Nothing new. 2) 4 Corners/Medicine Lake: Nothing new. 3) Door Knob: Nothing new. 4) Pilgrim Creek: Left over from last months, Eileen still needs to get a letter off to the OHV or FS to find out what is happening with the approved grooming shed. On 2-5 Eileen spoke to Ed about the groomer shed. The funds are there, the building is on order, the slab construction is at State level to be approved, and the plan is to start on it this spring. It is going to be placed about 30ft from where the snow berm is located right now. Also, the plan is still to have wood storage in the shed. Ed said that he would not be handing out keys to everyone, but that the groomers could run wood to the shed while they are waiting for the groomer to warm up. The Club has two pull sleds in the shed, one could be placed in the woodshed to use for hauling wood back and forth. Eileen will get a letter to Guthrie's regarding the wood shed? Also, they are going to do the parking lot this summer. Members attending the meeting wanted to know if it was possible to have a separate door leading into the wood area. We will have to talk to Ed about this. USFS: 1) Klamath National Forest: Nothing new. 2) Shasta/Trinity Forest: Shasta-T has been putting an avalanche flyer together. We Page 1
2 have a sample of one. They would like to use OHV funds to print these, but don't know if they will be able to. Is the Club interested in donating funds to help get these printed, and if so how much? We could get the Club's name and snow phone listed on. A sample of the flyer was passed around. Dick Cowardin thought it would be a good idea to ask the FS how much they are looking for the Club to donate. If we could find this out, we could vote on it at the next meeting. Eileen said she d ask Val or Ed. Groomer Reports: 1) Klamath report: Nothing new. 2) Shasta/Trinity report: Russ Elgin gave a groomer report. They are going to try and get throught the Christmas Tree farm, and he saw no reason why we couldn t get a groomer on the M31 Road before the Nordic Bypass ride. OHMVR: Shasta-T got new snowmobiles this season. They are Polaris 600's. They were purchased from Central Equipment in Oregon. These were CA funds spent out of state. Original the bid from Rollie at A&R Power Sports was for 600's, something happened at the OHV level and the bids had to be resubmitted. Rollie couldn't get or didn't have 600's so he put the bid in for 700's. (Rollie could have tracked down 600's if he would have been given the chance.) The bid between the 600's and the 700's was only around a $ difference. This is nothing against Central Equipment, we have numerous members whom purchase their sleds from them, this is about spending our CA OHV funds out of state. Dick Cowardin said that he would look into the problem. CNSA: Convention to be held in Redding this year. We need help with Club hosted rides for Chuck's Park on Feb 26 (Tue) & Pilgrim Creek on Feb 27 (Wed). Dick Cowardin is Chairperson for the rides. Dion Meadows said that he would lead the rides out of both parks. Dion asked about grooming though the Christmas Tree Farm. Safety: CNSA Safety Seminar was held on Saturday, January 26th. We canceled the seminar due to lack of snow the Sunday before, then rescheduled it that Monday after getting some new snow. We were able to hold the Seminar away from the warming hut, just up the IP Road, that's junction 8. There were just over 20 people that showed up for the Seminar, at least 5 of them were from the Forest Service. Al Burnham gave us a presentation on 'Basic Snowmobile Safety and Code of Ethics', 'Snowmobile ACSA Hand Signals' (thanks to Katie Nedved for the demonstrations) and 'Operation Rules'. Did you know that the speed limit within 50 feet of a campground, campsite, or concentration of people or animals is 15 mph? Scott Nedved talked to us about hypothermia. Vincent Johnson talked about knowing the difference between someone going into diabetic shock and hypothermia. Do you know if someone you ride with is a diabetic? We started a fire and took a break for lunch. The weather started to close in and it began to snow. Scott Nedved gave us a presentation on safety and survival techniques and gear. They had even built a snow cave for us to look at. Did you know that good old Fritos Corn Chips burn? They are great for starting a fire. By the time lunch was over the wind was blowing and the snow was really coming down. Vincent gave us some basic snowmobile emergency repair tips and had Barbara McPherson change the belt on his sled. Well done Barbara! The weather was getting worse, so we had our drawings, first was a space blanket won by Dick Anderson, second was a candle lantern won by Ed Garayalde, and last was a snow shovel won by David Patrick. We all headed back to the Park, where safety certificates were handed out in the warming hut. Thank you to the CNSA Safety group (and their wives). The Seminar was wonderful, thank you for all your work! Eileen has some pictures. Public Relations: Dick Cowardin will send something to the newspapers on the safety course. Medicine Lake Projects (Dick Cowardin & Eileen Maier): We never did get together with the Cal-Pine engineer. He did not come up until Sunday, with meetings on Monday. Mercy Air Ambulance (Barbara McPherson): Barbara wanted to let everyone know she has membership applications if anyone is interested. Memberships come due in May; she can prorate the fee for you. Please call her if you are interested and she will answer any of your questions. Barbara (530/ ). We are attaching a copy of the application for you. Please mail it to Barbara. Barbara McPherson, 6560 Kimberly Dr., Redding, CA Adopt-A-Highway (Dick Holcomb & Bill Willison): Next scheduled cleanup is May 11th. UNFINISHED BUSINESS: Memorial Plaque for Chuck Page 2
