3 TALE-WHEELVIEW By: President Tom McDowell 2017 Fall Fest ival I have been asked to have our events there by a few of our members. I guess it?s because we?have always had it at Alloway?. It is my wish that we carry on at Cross Keys as long as it is available. Only the future will dictate what happens next. Well, festival is now history. The first thing I really want to say is thank you to all the faithful, hardworking members of this chapter that came out to help. Would love to see more of you come out even if it is just to say hi, grab The Blacktop Villains Car Club brought a bite and leave. Sure- we can always use more some nice classics and muscle out to the event. help, but I know you may have?stuff?to do. If we do this again next year at Cross Keys, we I was agonizing over the thought to need more help as if Mother Nature postpone this event to Sunday, but in cooperates, I see the crowd much bigger. retrospect, maybe not such a bad idea. As I write this piece, the weather outside is no better. The start of yesterday?s event came in Saf et y like a freight train. I was thinking of getting A word on safety. As many of you know, I there early, about 8:00 or 8:30. Well, after eyes wide open at 0400, I decided to just get up and had a very interesting landing with my Trike. It was only due to the EAA Webinars, safety get ready early. When I rolled around the webinars and safety articles available that my corner about 7:30ish, I see the first person landing would have been much worse. Would there was Robin. Poked my head in the EAA have been a non-issue if the soybean vines, like office and she was knee deep in getting steel cables, didn?t jerk the Trike to an immediate inventory and documents ready for sale. stop. As we say, anytime you can walk away The day before (Friday) the Big Tent was from a hard landing, it is a good one. Little more set up at about Noon. Right after the guys on safety: Flying W held a seminar recently. I opened the Equipment trailer and started to drove Dan and Wayne up to it. The subject was pull out and set up the tables. The cooking about Spins, Stalls and Upsets. It was a very trailer and my crab cooker were set up near interesting seminar and the two hours went way the tent. The DJ, Glen Krebs came in and set up too fast. To some, it was spot on, to others is close by. helped, and yet to anyone new it may have been The clock was racing ahead as there a bit overwhelming. Regardless where you fit in, were all kinds of people driving in and at point you always get something out of it that will come it seemed to get a bit out of control. If we are back later. to have another event like this, we need to have better control as I couldn?t run fast enough. Even though our home base is right here at Airport Drive, we must never forget we are guests. This is still private property and we will adhere to the wishes of the owner and the tenants of the property. The other option for this event would be at Bucks?.
4 TAIL WHEEL VIEW (con t in u ed) FALL FESTIVAL 2017 President Tom McDowell Mr. Bob Cooper Next Br eak f ast I just sent an to many of you but I know I didn?t get everyone. Bob asked what the date was for our?november Pancake Breakfast?. Well, I am registered for the EAA Boot Camp in Gettysburg on November 4th. The following weekend is Veterans Day. My VFW Post has a lot going on that weekend. If someone will take the lead on running this breakfast, it can be done on the first Saturday in November New slet t er Help Well, unless JD inserts a few photos, this is all I got. Many years ago, I asked a few other groups: car clubs and flying clubs,?what holds you guys together?" Hands down they all said?the Newsletter?. It is hard to do when it is just one or two people who do all the work. I am asking again, if you would send just a note, a photo, a comic, a funny story etc. to JD to keep our newsletter interesting Good Afternoon Folks. Some thoughts on the Festival Congratulations to out leaders - Friday- I arrived at the airport - Tom was HAPPY that the tent - tables - porta-potty - were all in place Now I was watching the weather report - I left airport about 7:00 PM= and as I drove home the rain came? So - watching all night and the drizzle did not stop - up early headed to the KEYS Happy to arrive in light rain - - the trailer was all ready to start cooking - the little tents were up - for chili cook-off - and the clothing sale the "DJ" was making music - so we were a go - in spite of the light rain - as the morning moved along folks began to arrive - about 10 cars were on site - the food was ready for eating - folks sat and chatted There were 5 pots of Chili - Terry Lewis was the winner!! Mr. Tom - Mr. Bob - GREAT job - and for me I was HAPPY you decided to GO! SORRY, no airplanes flew in - 2 moved out of their hangars Again - THANKS!! Bob Cooper Our undisputed chili champion, Ter r i Lew is accepting the award from President Tom McDowell. Good luck on your checkride! - EAA Chapter
5 INTO THE SOUP: St u den t Pilot 's f ir st Act u al IM C exper ien ce Newsletter Editor JD Bostani "Hey JD - why don't you take the plane up and test out the ceiling height?" It's a flight school tradition of the past to send up a student pilot to test out the cloud ceilings. Good VFR in IMC practice. We navigated our way back to the VOR approach fix, which in our case was the Woodstown VOR, we then turned towards ALEWS, which is named after Albert Lewis. We descended and found the runway from about 3 miles out. I landed the 172 in a practice short field landing, and happened to forget to tell Jake why I was approaching slow. I came home to a standing ovation from members of the airport community that I love. Let me tell you, you all are like family to me. You guys seriously made me feel like a rockstar while taxiing back. Jake and I joined the party once we put the plane back in the hangar. As VFR student pilots, we were always taught to make a 180 degree turn away from the IMC. If you are trapped, rely on your instruments * brushes shoulder off* - if you were a full-day and get help from ATC. But after the Fall airport bum on Saturday, you'll get it. Festival, instead of dodging IMC, Jake and I went on a quest to find some IMC. I may or may not make it to the meeting, so see you all whenever, We filed an IFR flight plan from Cross Keys to Milville to shoot an ILS over there, and come JD - flying out home to fly the VOR 9. I took off with just the right amount of right rudder, executing an immaculate takeoff and we climbed to 400 ft. A climbing right turn was started at 400 ft, and we hit IMC at about 900 feet. We climbed through a nearly 1,500 foot high cloud breaking out at about 2,500 feet. ATC cleared us for 3,000 feet so we had a solid VFR on top flight. Well, that is unless you consider the intensity of the sun at altitude with clouds. Gee whiz! We went right back into the cloud I took this shot when Jake had the flight controls. layer that was around due to the temperature-dewpoint spread, into a slam dunked ILS for Runway 10 at MIV. We broke out right at minimums for a missed approach. Back to 17N we go.
